Backyard Chickens!

the house I'm watching right now has chickens, 3 adults and 4 chicks. The chicks are little and in a cage under a heat lamp inside. The Chickens have a too nice coop, she spent like a grand on a fething chicken coop. They do get tons of eggs though.

So the guy is my good friend, and he hates them. He only hates them because he didn't want them and he is the only one with money. She was a student who was poor. She ordered a $500 coop and it was too small, and guess what, no returns. So then he had to get a $800 that was big enough. Then since there was an extra coop laying around he came home one day to find 4 chicks. He was like WTF? So this coop was too small for 3 chickens, so he has to buy another one, then she buys 4 more chickens, which will not fit in the coop. She is in the process of finding a home for 2.

my friend did the math and so far he could eat eggs for the rest of his life and then some with the money he has spent on these chickens.

tell your friend to wake up, it's the gf and not the chickens that's costing him money. by August he'll have enough meat for a bbq as a going away party for the gf and be done w/the whole lot. he sees problems but I see potential, sell the coops on CraigsList.......

win~win~win.

i have a buddy who has chickens. he has them at his weekend getaway cabin. they stay cooped up during the week with an automatic feeder and watering system...

they produce a shitload of eggs and when we meet him out there for the weekend sometimes we have really tasty eggs all weekend :D

its funny too, he lets him out when he is there and they automatically go home to the coop just before dark and he locks them in...

i recently purchased some land and will be raising chickens as soon as i can start to build... :tiphat:

yea, it is funny, but it is totally natural, they need to get protection from the creepy things in the night, mainly coons and possums. When I need to let the dogs out I grab a bowl of their feed and shake it, they run straight for the coop, they really aren't that smart, it's all instinct.

Well...

Well...

Roosters are not legal here & hens don't crow!

P.S. I just found out our neighbor behind us also has chickens!

Hey JJ, actually some hens DO crow! When there's not a rooster around, some hens will step up and mock crow. It's not as loud as the male, and it sounds kinda cute!

On Oahu, it's legal to have 2 backyard chickens, and it's about to go up to 8, including one rooster! With a population of around 900,000 people, I think things are going to get crazy over there.

Here on Maui there isn't any laws, and the feral chickens are everywhere. Guess you would call them "free range" lol.

Same in Puerto Rico, there are feral/wild hens and roosters and chicks all over the place. If you can catch 'em, you've got dinner. You'll also find cattle roaming free in the more rural areas.

And if they're very fast and competative they are called 'landrace'

Hehheh, bless her soul, but can you guys imagine the pain sweetestsin would endure, trying to capture and tend all those 'poor' chickens?

If I could have some animals right now, chickens would be first on my list. They practically care for themselves if their set-up is proper. Overcrowded chickens with too many roosters = big problems.

As for slaughtering, there are killing cones available or you can make your own. Supposedly they help keep the chicken in one place when it's slaughtered, and helps with draining blood. I would probably rate Red Stars as one of the better eating chickens, if you don't want one of those hybrid fast growing ones. Red Stars have a good chicken flavor and are not stringy. I'd also go for Delawares...they were used for meat chickens before the hybrids came along. I wish I could rear some chickens now..I do miss them!

What'd you get in that mix, and are they sexed for you already? I like roosters, love to hear them crow.

"Farm fresh eggs" are untouchable. That golden, full flavored yolk.. make grocery store eggs look like a flimsy shell of blob.
