ShorterMemory, During the wet part of the year his water source is elevated and uses gravity to fill the Rez and also to water the plants. If I remember rite the timer opens up at the programed time allowing the siphon to flow untill the timer closes the valve. During the dry part of the year he said something about a small gas pump used to pump water to the Rez, would pump the water up the hill 100' from the year round creek down the hill.

Peace, SSSSpaceman SSSpliff

Thanks SS!

Shortermemory-To fill the rez, I will siphon from a seasonal creek just a little higher in elevation.

Ideally I will not have to pump from the year round creek, ever. God forbid, if I have a glich and lose all my water, I do have that creek to get water from. If it is late in the season I will just haul the water in a jerry can/backpack. If I need lots of water, my only option will be to haul a small gas powered pump into the grow. I can muffle the sound of the pump, and the little homelite arn't unreasonable to pack around.

But man I hope I don't ever have to do that!

What PureSativa420 meant was it is wetter in the Midwest during summer than it is here in SW Oregon. It really does get quite dry.

When my Grandfather(a former grain farmer) moved from Nebraska to the west coast, he was amazed at the trouble people went to for irrigating crops. In Nebraska they depended on regular summer rainfall to irrigate the crops. Out here on much of the west coast, it stops raining for most, if not all of the summer.

Damn BC, this thread really blew up! Must be about that time of year where everyone is looking to get the ball rolling on their outdoor, and who else to look to for ideas? Seens like it'll do great, and October shall be a glorious time of year! I think for halloween we should have a manicuring party! Hehe. Since your stuff is basicaLLY set it and forget it, we'll have plenty of time to tend to the beast and his son. lol, See ya later man!

oregon is extremely diverse in its weather patterns through the year, depending on where you are. Basically if you are west of the cascades there is more rain throughout the whole year, where as to the east, such as the high desert region (truly a desert type area) it rains a lot less the whole year, and notably hardly at all in the later summer. Just my 2 cents.

BC - you did back fill your resevior pit, correct? I cant imagine that without support from the earth that your design could hold the weight of 200 gallons of water without some sort of disaster. Isnt that like a half ton or something. Although myself, I havent tried that before though so I could basicly be talking out my ass. :moon: lol. If thats the case, just ignore my ignorance.

Yes it does depend on the area of Oregon you are in. I live in the SW part of the state, west of the Cascade mountains, and pretty much the entire summer is very dry, I think the NW section of Oregon gets some rain in summer on occaision, but the Siskiyou mountains to my west generally block most moisture trying to make its way inland.

Yep, its 1600 pounds of water! Most of the point of putting the rez in the hole is to use the earth itself is to hold the weight. Two of the walls were built directly to the dirt, the other two were backfilled.

In the year I have lived here, so far the weather patter has been rain rain rain, heat heat heat, rain rain rain. Rainy all the time in the winter, with no spring, then over night 100 degrees for 3 months then right back to rain rain rain with no fall. hehe, Im an original Cali boy, Im not used to this shit. Hehe. Oh well, it beats overpopulation. This start of this year has seemed different, a couple more sunny days throughout the rain season. Maybe we can get some spring weather in this year before it jumps to 100. Anyways, thats all i got to say about that.

shortermemory-I think you would be asking for a clogged up system if ya did that, unless it is being stirred or moved by bubbles, the nutes would drop out of the water, or may possibly help some kind of slime grow in your rez.

BackCountry maybe a wind run turbine (like roof vents) hooked to a paddle in the res to keep things mixed up, and if you place your nutrients in a nylon it should keep particulates to a minimum.

SS-I think I would just rather put more work into improving the soil in the plots itself. That sounds like too much trouble LOL! I want nothing in my tank but clear water, thats peace of mind for a system that may go a month without me.

I plan on getting some good manure dug into the plots soon, along with a host of other good stuff. I plan on reusing this system until the logs get too rotten to hold the hole together, so this soil will be very well taken care of.
