Baaba Qo Selections

As for smoke reports, the Sholgar has gotten less harsh after a couple months in the jar. Effects are slightly euphoric and calming but not knock out. I like it. Here’s a couple flower shots from # 3, the one with some purple -

Hash update: dry-sifted both Rustam Kush and Sholgar within the past few weeks, on cold dry nights below 32 F out in my garage. Not sure yet how I will process the sifts into hash, as I’m still gathering info about how the old pros back over there get it done. My dry-sift skills still need improvement, as shown by the green plant material through the microscope. If I get any more dry nights below freezing I might run them both over a 40 micron screen to clean them up -

And also in the Baaba Qo department, there is this plant from a Rustam Kush x Sholgar seed that popped while still on the Sholgar mom before I chopped her down, from an intentional selective pollination. Incorporated it into my annual winter windowsill grow, where less than ideal temperature and light conditions are purely intentional as I don’t want to put any real effort into an inside grow. As you can see she is short but generally happy, about 20” tall. Tight nodes. Around a month into flower, I will soon start putting her in the basement a couple hours each day to keep her from jumping back into veg as the days get longer -

Popped 5 each of Baaba Qo’s Mazar-I-Sharif and Rabat selections for this year’s outdoor grow (along with TRSC Dakshinkali and Rasoli). The Mazar seeds are huge and quickly threw root tails -

The Rabat seeds are pretty beefy too, just took a little longer to crack. Wound up scuffing the last Rabat with a nail file and that did the trick, just waiting for a tail to emerge before putting into soil -

Ended up with none of 10 Rabat producing any viable roots. Transplanted 4 Mazari in the ground last weekend, the first 3 were the originals started April 1 and the last one a replacement for one that dampened off a month later. Would have liked to have put them outside earlier but didn’t think they’d like persistent nights in the low 40s F. All seem healthy, took the transplant well and are ready to take off now that their roots can spread. Some critter bite damage but not enough to freak out over. I think I’m going to like these plants and looking forward to them duking it out with TRSC Panjshiri to see which one produces the best hash (thanks to the UN Office of Drug Control for reporting the Panjshiri hash price had overtaken Mazari and was Number One in the land, and piquing my interest) -

Yesterday I chopped this Rustam Kush x Sholgar plant that started last fall. It was from an intentional cross; the seed popped open while still on the branch so it became part of my annual winter windowsill plant project (cool temps, basic supplemental light). Nice little plant with a gassy citrus scent. In the hanging shot it’s on the left. Interested to see what it cures into -

Those Rabat are old, 2018 collection? I know Baaba is still attempting to run business but as far as I know any seed stock anyone has, in spite of advertising claims or release dates suggesting otherwise, is pre-covid. Just sprouted some Sholgar and Kholm from him.

I got Baaba’s Kholm, Mazar, Rabat, Rustam Kush and Sholgar in Sept 2021. Recall they were billed as from the 2020 crop by Inoculate The World.

Both the Rustam Kush and Sholgar grew well for me last year. They make great hash too, the Rustam Kush more upbeat and the Sholgar relaxing with a spiritual vibe.

Planning to run his Kholm next year, along with The Real Seed Co’s Chitrali and a couple Karakoram strains.

I've everything he collected other than the Panjshir. Have been grateful for what he was able to get. I bought him out of his remaining Sheberghan stock after it got too dangerous in 2020 to visit there from where he was. The insanity of not being able to visit a neighboring province's capital 50 miles away.

His Kholm is also sold as Tashkurgen by RSC, both are from Lucas Strazzeri who collected them in I believe 2019. His photobook "Afghanistan: Fortress of Cannabis" is fantastic, and that trip is the source of many of the publicity photos that Baaba has used.

I have both versions of Lucas’s book, agree it is excellent. Have chatted with him on IG. He told me that he tipped Baaba off to the Sholgar crops he saw during his travels, which is how those seeds became available.

My copy of the first edition got lent out and never returned, so I was very pleased with the much improved second! Really fantastic. Lucas is a great guy too.

The Mazari ended up as two girls and two boys. They’ve been a bit challenged first by earwigs and then septoria leaf spot that I should have hit with copper fungicide earlier. Going forward I will integrate spraying all Afghans and Pakistani plants not from monsoon areas beginning in July, since apparently we do now have a monsoon in SE Massachusetts.

This short stout girl had her top chewed up by some animal or she would have been a couple feet taller, but she will still surpass 6 feet. Classic Balkh Province hashplant structure. She has held up the best against septoria out of all the Mazari and TRSC Panjshiri females and was also the first of the Afghans to show sex. Stem rub produces sour citrus scent -

IMG_6892.jpeg

The rangier girl is over 8 feet. She would be more leafed out but for the septoria. Otherwise a healthy plant with a more perfumed and complex scent than her sister -

IMG_6893.jpeg

I initially thought this one was a female, but it turned out male. Dense plant over 7 feet. Healthy in spite of looking weird. Never did figure out why it wanted to produce these variegated leaves, it was fed plenty of nutrients so maybe lockout? In any event as of a couple days ago he’s no longer with us, although he will live on in progeny from his pollen that I’m collecting -

IMG_6848.jpeg

The other Mazari male was a solid healthy Christmas tree that too was over 7 feet when I chopped it a couple of weeks ago. I’m collecting his pollen as well to make seeds -

Baby batter -

Three weeks later and both girls are doing quite well. Mazari 1 did get over 6 feet despite losing her top in June and has thick flowers on chunky colas, that smell of fuel and lemon citrus. She’s the squat one on the left -

Mazari 4 is over 9 feet and is a bit behind her sister. Flowers have kind of a foul rotting meat smell that fades to a woody scent -

IMG_7331.jpeg

Haven’t seen any bud rot on any of the plans yet, but Mazari 1 looks like a prime target for that. And it looks like it’s going to be a wet fall yet again with maybe a weekend hurricane to boot, so I blasted the whole garden with peroxide today. Seeing brown stigma where I hit them with pollen for seed repros last week, so looks like that worked.

Both are down now, took Mazari 1 Oct 4th and Mazari 4 on Oct 16th. Cured and jarred a couple ounces from 1 and the rest went in the garage to hang for winter hash. 4 just doesn’t want to dry, been hanging 9 days and still no snap to branches. Will cure and jar a small amount of that too but it’s the hash I’m interested in so off to the garage with the rest. Septoria leaf spot made me take both down earlier than I wanted. TRSC Panjshiri also were impacted, though one is still in the ground. The Afghans did not enjoy the super soggy summer and yield and quality suffered. Flower pics from right before the chop. Still have Baaba’s Tashqurghan left to try -

Humidity is so high nothing will dry, winter months are drier with the cold coming... paper bags with bentonite (scent free cat litter cover with paper towel) or oven on keep warm keep moving it around with the door cracked then jar it quick with boveda packs for cure. Beats mold ? ;)

I give everything a quick “Cervantes bath” in a light peroxide solution before hanging to kill any mold, and then inspect again when I’m bucking the flowers I’m jarring and bundling the rest into sheaves for hash. The slow drier finally was able to be jarred yesterday and the rest is in the garage waiting for a night when the temp dips down to 10 degrees F so I can sift it. Going to be taking at least two TRSC Rasoli down today as they are close enough, wet weather looms and I’m weary of the struggle lol

This year’s Baaba Qo strain is Tashqurghan. Grew 5 plants, ended up with 3 males and 2 females. Septoria again was a menace, impacting 4 of the plants. Last one standing is this 7.5 foot female that did the best against septoria. Has some vulnerability to botrytis but it’s popping up in stems and not flowers. Smells of fuel with some hints of grape and liniment like your grandmother kept in the medicine cabinet. I’ve been whittling away at her and will probably take her down tomorrow-
