are you biased against people who don't look like you?

I think the pendulum swings both ways, clean cut judges the hippie look and the hippie look judges and assumes somebody who rocks the clean cut look too. Unfortunately people do judge books by their cover.

I've decided just to do what makes ME most comfortable. I buzz my hair because I get wicked dandruff when it grows out and it's way easier to take care of this way too. I take frequent showers because if I don't, I get itchy. I have always found most jeans too tight in the crotch too, and hate getting my nuts squeezed all day. I like some jeans though. My best bud got an earing back in the 70s and wanted me to, but I just didn't want one. I don't conform when pushed, I rebel. I personally hate tattoos too. The list goes on, I'm just trying to make a point.

Maybe that comes more with age, but I rock what makes ME comfortable. And try not to judge too. But I do. And like I said, the pendulum swings both ways OP. It sucks, people are like that, but you're right

Cool thread, stoned trout you crack me up haha, legend.

I rock short hair (always have), work in the city, don't smoke all day, no one I deal with in my working life would say I was a stoner. I have a tattoo sleeve, which I keep covered at work. People are so judgemental aren't they, but then stereotypes are so often right so no wonder..

This is why I don't adhere to either. Now don't interpret that as me being judgmental against people based on whether they conform to standards. The only thing that is relevant to me is how they treat me (and others).

The point being is that being judgmental and basing opinions of people based on stereotypes are not attractive to me in a humanitarian or a logical sense.

I am not suggesting everyone buck the system and I myself conform more to the mainstream at times but I have found playing into the system only reinforces it and why reinforce what I don't care for?

i was a longhair all through high school. joined the USAF & ended up in Fayetteville NC at Pope AFB. the longhairs in the bars on Hay street there were the biggest assholes on the planet because i had short hair...:fsu:

I know what you mean! Having a 35-10 haircut in the 70s sucked ass when you weren't around your fellow airmen.

Heh, one time I let my hair go badly out of regs, because I was going on a 30 day leave. Got nailed by the fucking Wing Commander the day before my leave started. After he told me what he thought of my appearance (not much), he ordered me to get a haircut and report to him to ensure it was done. Man, that sucked. Instead of starting my leave at least scruffy, I got to start it with a haircut the Wing King would approve of. Looked like a dang jarhead after that cut.

Eventually, I just buzzed it all off and kept it like that until I retired.

But to the thread, I try not to judge folks on appearance. Looks really have nothing to do with a person's worth. I've spent half my life looking one way and half my life looking drastically different. Same dude the whole time though.

Ironically enough I went and got my hair cut, only because it is think as lion's mane, parted in the middle and wavy so at some point the sides look like wings and I start looking like the flying nun.

My driver's license says military man, my appearance says no haircut or shave in almost 2 years. It's fun to let the police try and figure it out.

Got a little under a year to decide if my license will look like a werewolf photo or not.

My last license picture looked nothing like me. I tried to buy a beer at a baseball game and the dude wouldn't sell to me. I made a huge deal out of it and security (off duty cops) had to come over and see what the commotion was. They actually sided with me believe it or not and tried to get me to go to another stand. Then mr. vendor said he could get me kicked out for swearing at him. And I said NO, you swore at me (I was bluffing). Then a family member of mine came over and started getting agitated with the guy saying this is no way to treat season ticket holders especially after all the money we spend!! lol. It turned out that vendor has a reputation for being a hard ass. He's still at the same stand all these years later.

Edit: I think I told this story before, but the point is avoiding situations like this makes life easier. And as much as I hate to admit it, what bababud said a few posts below is totally true.

funny thing about this thread is that rats do a similar thing.

Rats who have had a companion of a specific color pattern will more easily get along with any other random rat with a similar colour pattern.

so a rat that grew up with an all white rat, when introduced to say a hooded rat will be more cautious in accepting that rat, but if you introduce it to another all white rat it will automatically get along with that white rat IF it's experiences with a previous all white rat were good.

the more i can blend in with my surroundings the easier it is to do what I want

During breaks in filming on the sci-fi classic of Planet of the Apes, actors made up as different ape species tended to hang out together, gorillas with gorillas, orangutans with orangutans, chimps with chimps. It wasn't required, it just naturally happened.

My personal feeling is everyone is fucked so stay off my goddamn lawn. :shooty:

People like that stadium vendor annoy me, they also give me hope.

One of the most annoying people in my neighborhood kept a junkie from stealing my bike while I ran into his store. His dedication to the rules was almost comical and annoying, but in the end it helped me out.

As for stadium guy, what a dick.

It makes no difference to me what people look like. I either like them or I don't based on what they say and do.

I'm the stinky hippy type now a days but have almost always kept my hair long.

Your lifestyle is a waste of resources, imo, but it's your lifestyle, not mine.

To answer your question specifically...
How the hell do you expect us (stinky hippy types) to KNOW your not a cop?
It really is that simple.

I wouldnt say its a judgement against you but exactly as you suggest opinions are biased based upon appearances.
It's unfortunate but its a reality we all deal with.

and how do i know the stinky long hair i am interacting with is not a snitch?

I gotta be honest with you guys, some of the biggest obnoxious assholes and least tolerant also are the long haired stinky types...

If you want to know what kind of person you are dealing with than look into their eyes.

They eyes are a window into the soul.

"Matthew 6:22-24

22 The eye is the lamp of the body. You draw light into your body through your eyes, and light shines out to the world through your eyes. So if your eye is well and shows you what is true, then your whole body will be filled with light. 23 But if your eye is clouded or evil, then your body will be filled with evil and dark clouds."

For me personally, I could give a shit about appearances. Judgement is something best left to the man-made hierarchy of the court systems.

If someone new shows up to a gathering that we have arranged they are shocked at who they may run into.. I am a good old boy who hangs out with aero-space developers, auto engineers, machinists, mechanics, web designers, artists, writers, musicians, ditch diggers, laborers, stoners and anybody else you can think of.

People are people, consumers are consumers. Even consumers can be people.

I look kinda 'different' from my neighbors and the police station is right down the street but to make everyone feel more comfortable
my house flies an American flag, my yard has an angel statue and inside there's a praying hands placard on the wall and a cross.

The subliminal image sezs that underneath I'm really just like THEM but I get to be ME!:tiphat:

Good post Weird... I guess I fall into the con-man category.. I rock a high and tight Leo/army look.
I find it helps tremendously in my interactions with cops and gomer homeowners.
Since I went from long hair to the cop look... Cops haven't wanted to look in my ride and homeowner can't wait to hand me a big check to do work on their home.
It does suck tho, cause being someone ur not all the time to avoid prison and make more $ is lame.. But I really dislike cages so I'll keep telling the barber gimme the cop cut.

I'm with you 'Mo' survival is important where I'm at, as much as I agree with Weird, and his honesty, I need to be shit free, do my time with the right wing, then return to my place and chill,

there are many who dress and act as stoners, and many of them have never toked, if any actually did, they'd be convinced of being addicted or risk being ostracized from there own social subsets
..screw them

I get where your coming from on the doing your time now for the benefit of your future..

Without getting in depth.. what is stopping you from being you? If you woke up in the morning and you were influenced by nothing but what is between your ears, who would you be?

A line from my Grandfather.. "Unless you take the time to learn for yourself, you only know what you have been told".
