Are old genetics.. just plain out of date now?

Strains come and go depending on popularity. Many people seek out old strains, even landrace, because of the particular high. Modern does not automatically mean good.

Also THC is a small part of the equation. Some 10% THC varieties are much better than some 25% varieties. There's much more than THC involved in the high. A lot of people are medical users and are after a particular effect. I personally use mostly older sativa varieties as I like them more.

Breeding (or pollen chucking) has created some great strains, but also reduced the differences between varieties, kind of a bland melting pot. I find a lot of modern strains bland or cause unwanted effects.

Someone I know has a bunch of old genetics/seeds (2006-2010'ish) , which are probably mostly dead now from age. But not totally dead.
Question would be, why bother if they are all outdated and low THC stuff compared to the thousands and thousands of new "strains" that seem to be everywhere? Nobody had THC % reports on any of that old stuff.
'06-10 is considered old now? Making me feel my age bro hahaha. All those old strains are still the building blocks of todays strains. Nothing new under the sun as they say, except marketing, marketing is better these days.

Why is it that it always revolves around one component/compound?

Yea I personally wouldn't get too hung up on THC content. THC is just one of hundreds of compounds that contribute to the effect of each strain.

Also I mostly make extracts, so THC content of a strain is kinda irrelevant to me. Just means ill have a bit more or less of said extract. 😋

All that aside I definitely wouldn’t discount a strain because of age. If anything, i’d covet those “vintage” selections! 😀

BTW what strains exactly are you looking at?

Shit!,I want the old stuff,to make new, because eventually it’s gonna go back to the og and sour and haze imo the high of the haze and power of the Chen lines was always tough one to crack and I’m not too impressed with all this hype weed ,I mean I dig all these new terps that’s amazing but I been getting different highs colors and terps for a while now,it’s mostly the difference n the strains that allures me. The high, effects, taste, smell, and look all dat, prolly can’t get different mixing every gelato with every gelato cross it’s the same shit, hell if u don’t want them I’ll take em 😎

The consumer will always want the pretty buds with high THC because that's what the industry tells them is the best. It's our responsibility as growers to show our friends how quality has nothing to do with pretty Instagram pictures, high THC tests, amount of resin, or what the idiots like Snoop Dogg or Seth Rogan are smoking that week.

My favourite thing about cannabis, is the variety of effects it has to offer. Sadly one has to really do some research to bypass the bullshit bombarded by the industry, to find different and interesting things.

Even then, the few companies that do offer some interesting things act as gatekeepers, sell their seeds at unfair, outrageous prices, allowing you to grow just a few plants at a time and barely getting a taste of what these genetics have to offer. Some of these companies have the balls to call themselves preservationists as well . Not many growers are going to find good keepers when they pay 15€ for a single fem seed.

My favourite keeper is from a strain that came out in the 90s. Selected from 30 seeds that were given to me by a fellow grower. Networking among ourselves and taking part in actual preservation is what will keep these old genetics alive. The cannabis industry is extremely shallow and people who profit from it are not to be trusted with preserving anything but how full their pockets are, IMO.

Can you find out what strains they are and post back? Might be some real winners amongst them :)

I found out that old strains have more diversity..
I think that all those candy strains cookies,gelato...
Are really good commercial weed.
It gets you high, taste sweet and look good.
But they are nothing what you will remember.
If they are food they will be Mc Donalds.

But I grow Sherbert x gelato and Bubblegum side by side.
All people that tried both were said that Bubblegum wins in every aspect.
Smell better, look better and its stronger...more stoney compared to sherblato aka. Mokums tulip.

I saw yesterday sensi's grow report on their Master kush and it was tested at 24% thc.
So old strains have also high thc.

So I can say that new strains have only better names than those old strains.

Thats what I think about new vs old.

maybe out of fashion .....but certainly not out of date imo.......to create something truly original ....its often advantageous to look to the past,... rather than the current .......we have the map to the current in vouge strains .........to arrive at a different destination than kushy cookie gelato land......your gunna have to take a different route....if we have different goals than high thc and a candy crush smell ....your going to have to start a journey before those traits became prevalent............where is the next 'haze' gonna come from ? .....certainly not the 'cookie fam' .....that i can guarantee
