Hey Hash Zeppelin, Do you really think it is necessary to bring bear mace and handgun if you hike the Appalachian trail? I understand the bear mace, but do you really think a gun is necessary? Protection from looneys or animals? I don't think there is to much crime on the App trail.
Anyone know any good books about peoples experiences hiking the app trail?
Also for the hammock, I feel like you could set up a pretty sturdy tarp making the wind and rain not a issue. I backpacked thru dolly sods for 5 days, and it rained the whole time. Literally! I slept in my ENO with a tarp above me and didn't get wet.

^A gun is a tool for survival, not weapon for starting shit. It is man's ultimate last chance assurance of survival in nature. It is not about stopping crime, even though there has been several murders on the trail over the last decade. If you get lost and you need to shoot and eat something then you will be glad to have it. If you need to shoot a charging bear that doesn't give a shit about mace then you will be glad you have it. If you are cornered by a bear or snake you will be glad you have it. if you get lost and hurt and you hear people in the distance but they cant hear you, then you will be glad you have it. If you cant understand that than you should not go back packing, because in an emergency you will die because you just don't have the survival spirit. you can prey to jah when you are about to get mauled to death, or starve to death but it wont help you as quick as reliable firearm.
My back packing experience comes from more rugged, less populated country though. More predators and poisonous snakes. I have back packed through much of the the Rockies. All over New Mexico and Colorado. also all over the grand canyon, and some of Utah, canyon land ,and some sierra Nevada out in California. I have been though all the mountains Arkansas, and done lots of back packing in west Texas, and south Texas.

hahaha well hopefully we will get recpetion when needed.. Two of 3 of us use verizon so who knows if that will work to our advantage or disadvantage.. I cant wait to get out there though and smell the fresh air.

if you like that trail. then after words you need to explore the west. it is a whole nuther beast. There is the continental divide trail. the pacific rim trail. the tahoe rim trail. the lost coast trail, the John Muir trail. oh so much adventure in the west.

I've seen phones that work better than average but not often. IMO, it's a combination of hardware and service that makes a better capable roamer.
But you'll be mobile so your call out is just a matter of reaching the next ridge, (assuming you're not within a larger valley.) Receiving calls is what will be most restricted. But that's the idea on vacation, right?
Yeah I don't need to receive any calls at all really, I have no ties to the real world. Just need to call out for someone to pick us up to go home or in case of emergency.

That's why I'm a creature of civilization. At least close enough to a grocer for supplies. That way everything doesn't have to be carried at once. If I'm gonna camp, cooking something hot is a real treat.
But (stores) might take the fun out of it for some.

I was thinking a good breakfast to start the day, having snacks through out the day while hiking, like jerky, nuts/granola, misc little candies and then eating a good dinner once camp is set.
