Anything outdoors 2020

Yesterday was probably the hottest day of the year, 93 degrees F. It shows how wimpy our summers are. I'd been out in the heat cutting blackberries. Clearing room to tie back one of my Shishkeberry plants. The plant and blackberries were over ten feet, holding the loppers and machete above my head had me dizzy and lightheaded. I was ready to head back to cool off, crack a beer and smoke a bowl. I thought I'd look at my other Shishkeberry, check it's progress into flowering and see if the blackberries were bothering it. I looked at it, looked again, did a triple take. My jaw about dropped to the ground. It was covered in male flowers 3 or 4 days away from popping!

I'd done all my sexing in May and June from pre-flowers I was certain I'd seen a hair on every plant. Once I see a hair I mark it F and forget about it. I fucked up somehow and had been watering, fertilizing, babying an 11 foot tall male for the last two months! On top of that my buddy had given me a plant from feminized seed stock he'd bought from someone he'd met online. Turned out to be regular seeds and the plant he gave me was a male. I wouldn't have been as trusting but the other seeds from the people were really feminized, he'd grown them out over the last two years.

That makes two males in prime spots, after I'd given away or culled at least a dozen females in June. The silver lining is that my garden is overcrowded as usual, removing two males opens up lots of space for my rapidly growing females. I've already done a lot of renovating, stretching and tying the females into the open space.

I want to use the male Shishkeberry for breeding, who wouldn't want pollen from a sweet smelling 11 foot tall male? I'm thinking about digging it up but that doesn't sound like an easy job. I'm guessing the tap root is long and thick. I've already cut away the top 5 feet and a lot of side limbs. I'm tempted to take a huge chance and wait until the flowers are about to open. Then cut them, lay them out on newspaper, and hope I can get enough pollen to drop from the drying flowers.

All my plants are growing taller and stretching all over. I only have one plant with tufts so far, the rest are at various stages of tuck and stretch. Throwing hairs and getting dense at the tips. It should be a hell of a harvest.

One of my favorites is my Strawberry Glues. (Strawberry Shishkeberry x GG4) Here's the taller one. She's bushed out and still getting taller. At least 9 feet.

A big difference between the two angles, looks like different plants. Smells awesome.

One of my favorites is my Black Cherry Garlic. It smells and looks potent. I love the open structure, lets light reach all the way down into the center. I was worried about it getting crowded out, it's surrounded by big plants. Doesn't mind, it keeps getting taller and bushier. I didn't expect it to get so tall, pushing 11 feet.

The color is awesome, the leaves already have a black shade to them. The petioles are bright pinkish red. Here's a close up. It'll look spectacular during flowering.

I've got many favorites this year. I love the structure of both my Guava Wookies. I can't get over what a perfect plant the smaller one is.

I'm in awe of it. It's not much taller then I am but what a bush!

I’m really enjoying watching everyone’s hard work.
Looking good therevverand,
how’s that Royal x 5Gs shaping up???
I’m feeling your pain with that male, I’ve had a similar experience with a Lions Milk and a Sunshine Daydream (please don’t think I’m hating on Bodhi, just sharing my experience.)
I have read other people’s posts about exactly the same thing, female preflowers, early on but a male plant at the end of the season. Goes to show that the method isn’t fool proof and perhaps the old wife’s tale of plants changing their sex has some basis???
Has anyone else experienced this?? Can anyone explain the process???
Cheers,
40.

Love that garden gnome Zeez.

@gp7zx69: I was scrolling down quickly and recognized the look of those Boreal plants. Thought it was one of Tyco's posts at first before actually reading. Good work.

I'm almost certain it was my mistake, that the plant didn't have female pre-flowers. I might have mistaken a leaf for a hair. More likely I labeled the wrong plant female. It can happen when you've got a lot of seedlings and you're trying to keep track of which ones have shown pre-flowers. Another possibility, I gave my second best shishkeberry female to a friend. (the one that gave me the 'feminized' male) Maybe afterwards I got confused and thought I still had two female Shishkeberries. It's possible the stories of plants changing sex originate from hermaprhodites. The story I heard is that stress and abuse, along with sprouting seedlings without space for tap roots, can cause females to become male. This is true in a way since it makes a female much more likely to produce male flowers.

It's awesome. Big and and bushy. Probably bigger then I've seen either parent get. Here's what she looks like.

I have two Dogwalker x Ancient Ogs. They didn't do much for most of June and July. They were fine, just not as big as I'd hoped. In late July they went through a growth spurt, started growing insanely fast. I have one that got topped by a slug, caused it to develop two main tops. I was cutting blackberries and a blackberry vine hit it and caused it to split down the middle. Then I tried to tie it back to bush it out, which caused the two tops to split even more. I tied it up and left it for a month. I made a horrible discovery when I untied and unwrapped the stretchy tape. There was grey mold fuzz growing all down the crack. Here's what it looked like right after I removed the tape.

You can see old pine needles, along with other debris probably contributed to the mold. I cleaned it up, disinfected it. It seems to be healed and mold free although there's an earwig nest inside. I hope they eat grey mold. I know they'll chew through seedlings but they're mostly scavengers and carnivores. Eating fleas, mites, aphids, etc. I doubt they eat woody stem, they seem to like fruits, flowers, and fresh greens. I stuck green stretchy tape in the wound so more debris won't pile up inside the crack.

She seems happy and vigorous, the damage didn't seem to harm her. Here's what she looks like

It's an odd structure, a lot of long branching. The topping has caused her to bush out much more then she would have. Her 'little' sister, who's now the big sister because she wasn't topped.

It could be a good indoor strain with it's slim but stacked form. Depends on the type of grow but you could fit a lot in close together without worrying about blocking each other's light. The smell is awesome, hashy OG, cedar incense. Looking forward to see what happens during flowering.

Thanks therevverand.
I thought I’d made a mistake also, the first year, with the Lions Milk and started second guessing myself but when the same thing happened the following year with the Sunshine Daydream l knew l hadn’t, definite pistils. I found this very interesting and went on a knowledge quest but still am none the wiser.
