wow, thank you all for your wonderful pictures and comments, I haven't posted anything at all in quite some time due to being so outrageously busy now, I'm finally getting to take my trip to India, but first I get to stop in Bangkok for 5 days, hopefully i'll post pics of all the good herb that I see.

So I've arrived in Bombay and have been with my family, but unfortunately I won't get to travel to the areas where the good ganja and charas are available and so I am curious how an american "desi" like myself who has no language skill in hindi, urdu, or even gujrati....lol, basically only english, would go about finding charas in Bombay or Ahmedabad.

thank you. i have been in himachal pradesh before, in feb (and in the nepalese himalaya in october) and both times have found the weather amenable. but i think you are right about march or april, with springtime in full swing. thanks again

It's not about springtime. That's when they have the most hash.

supplys run low and quality isn't as good after then.

How safe is it for American white kids in their early 20's to be traveling around India by themselves? I was on vacation not long ago and met an Indian man who said we'd have a BLAST in India. I'd never given it much thought until reading this thread in its entirety and checking out the pictures of the jungle. I want in!

Also, checking X-Rates.com I noticed $1usd = ~40rp. I also noticed someone in this thread bought a 1/8 of dank for 50rp. Are you saying a 1/8 of good buds costs around $1.25 USD? That is ridiculous. Is it that weed is worth nothing over there, or our $1 is worth so much? I mean, comparably, how much could I rent a room from a nice Indian family for a few nights?

This thread really has me thinking about going to India. The jungle sounds WONDERFUL! What else can I read? I'm already looking into getting the book that Chamba suggested, "Are You Experienced" by William Sutcliffe (as low as $0.55 on amazon!)

Tell me more!

Well its been almost ten years since ive stepped foot in india, and i am way overdue to get back.
I went for the maha kumba mayla in haridwar in 1998. AMAZING TIME>
A very holy festival, where people from all around india pilgrimage up to the ganges, to bath in the ghats. I will try and find some of my photos, ( they were all film) and throw some up.
FOr now i have some pictures from this year's shiva ratcheri in NEPAL>
the baba pictures is the bicycle baba, and this year at shiva ratcheri, they fed around a 1000 people a day. Here is a pic of the food.
These guys are roots, and spend a lot of their time in a ancient shivite cave up north of katmandhu.

Also threw up a photo of bikram and his wife raj . Bikram was taught by the well known BISHNU GOSH, at the calcutta GOSH SCHOOL OF YOGA>
BISHNU"S brother, PRamanhansa Yogananda, was very well kown and wrote one of the top 100 spiritual books of our time. AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A YOGA"

just figured id' ad these, as to me, charas is a huge part of the trip to india, so is yoga.

Ps, We found the best charas, not to be in india, but in nepal, just my two cents.

you can go around anyway you want, from foot or donkey to bus, train or plane and of course the budget will depend on which transportation you choose and how far you travel. Still bus & trains are still good & reasonnable priced means of transportation. India is cheaper than the West for sure, but prices are rising every year, and because of international Oil/food prices crisis, this year won't be a cheap one. Moving around, plus guesthouse, plus food & drink (water is heavy budget there), plus smoke, all that makes from 5 to 15 euros per day, depending on where you're staying.

By the way, early January this year, Half of the Malana village has gone in smoke due to some big fire. Even Jamlu temple (the local deity who told the Malana people to make charas) is gone ! Go there while there's still something guys, this tragedy added to that of the road (some say the fire is punishment from Jamlu because of this road to Malana), I don't know for how long more the Oldest Democracy in the World will last...

I plan to be in Himachal next harvest time and will do my best to visit the place (shame I haven't been yet...).

Don't start with Goa please, I've not been there but most first hand reports I've heard told me about how rotten the place is (well, if you fancy multi-dope rave parties, then it's the place !)
I don't have a clue wether I'll go there someday (at least I can see by myself...) but as matter of fact, the only positive things I've heard about Goa are tales from the Golden Age of the Mythical (and certainly Mystical !) Hippie Hashish Trail. I know that I have loads of other places to visit before I think about going there.

Go to the mountains monk ! You'll have plenty of green (or dry) valleys to choose from where to loose yourself eheh...

and after the mountains of Joy if you are still interested in some beach pastime..you can choose the long lonely isolated beach along another hippy pilgrimage trail of Puri and Konark.
Thats the location I stay and can help around.
Here people are happy with drinkinng and smoking weed..as government shop happy selling them .
This location has a cosmic charge to body and mind with herbal weed drinks from ages.
miles of smiles
