OK, I think papaduc has the correct 411: increasing pH may not lock out any of the N. Makes sense that lowering ppm reduces X % the N & P.

The most I have ever dosed was 1100ppms (is that ~ 2.1 EC?) and only for a week after bud set, then I back down to ~ 800 for one week, the next week ~ 600... backing down ~ 100ppms each week to ~ 400, then by 200ppms during the final 2-3 weeks

I do follow V +Bs usage chart which reduces ppm over the last few weeks. A dilute nute regimen flushes better than 100% water

I think most people overuse nutes. Click on my 2 ufo thread to see plants @ 500ppms- lots of pistils, and thickening up very nicely

So flushing with a dilute solution is better for flushing? What if I dilute the ppms and raise the pH? Will this also be better for finishing?

I've read that if you use straight water rather than 150-200ppm nutrient solution, it will shock the root zone and slow down the plant's metabolism. However, I've found that with coco and blumats, there is enough residual buildup in the media that even if you are using straight water it will take a long time to get the runoff below 200ppm.

you only ever want to raise or lower the EC of your nutrient solution by 0.3EC - thats 150ppm, and you want to keep it at that level for about 3 days before moving up or down another step.

week 1 - 1.0EC
week 2 - 1.3EC
week 3 - 1.6EC
week 4 - 1.3EC
week 5 - 1.0EC
week 6 - 0.7EC
week 7 - 0.4EC
week 8 - 0.1EC(+)

at no time should you give 0.0EC (unless you feed them something on accident you and didnt mean to?)

my last feed before 'flush' is 0.5EC(250ppm) of MOAB(no v+b) and my 'flush' is 0.2EC(100ppm) tap water at ph 6.5. week 7 = 250ppm. week 8 = 100ppm till chop.

this all depends on the medium.

after two months how salty do you think the medium is? pretty salty... should be low ph too. you basically just made some dirt right? making the medium more alkaline frees up the residual salt buildup. free fertilizer at the end of the cycle basically, just enough to let her 'autumn out' but not too much that she never finishes or gets overcooked.

thats been my finding with coco too . i feed nothing but straight RO for the last 2 weeks ... give or take & when my runoff starts coming out at less than 100TDS , then i know its time to chop . the glands are usually about 10% amber at that point & a good amount of fan leaves are dying and falling off .

Bud sites are set. I have been upping ppms, now ~ 600. Friday's nute change will be ~ 800

Pretty clear evidence that high ppms are not necessary in hydro, at least when the nutes are being delivered efficiently


Pics 3-5 are from my hot5 tent. Been thinking about this for awhile, as the volume of nutes via the
160 gph pump hitting the rocks is weak, plus, it is sufficient to deliver a load of nutes to each HH ring, which is done now ~ 36 sec/hour. I have been looking into alternatives (Marineland pump from aquarium industry), but until I decide...

Yesterday, I swapped positions of the 2 pumps. I now have the 450 gph pump circ the nutes 24/7. This flow increase helps create more splash onto the rocks= more chi, but I want more.


Bud size is running neck and neck (upon closer inspection, incredibly, the led clones are bigger/fatter)

I have to take back my comments about a bad batch of V+B.
I realized that my bluelab meter was not calibrated correctly.
Purchased a new one and plants greened up when feeding 1.5 ec.
I have been underfeeding consistently with V+B but still pulled great yields and quality.
Can't wait for this next on to come down.
Last batch tested at the WERC shop was 20.6% THC

Organiclover - before you toss out the meter, pick up the BlueLab cleaning & calibration kit. It is a popular misconception that EC/PPM meters don't need to be calibrated, and some don't even have a way to do it. After driving myself crazy, and BlueLab tech support, for an extended period, I found that the buildup on the electrodes was causing the meter to read low. The only cleanser that I've found that works is the stuff from BlueLab - they gave me the name of a commercial cleanser that would do it, but it wasn't available anywhere that I could find in the U.S. even via mail order. The calibration solution is a quick way to see if your meter is reading properly. I've found that since I started using SM90 in my mix, the buildup is much quicker and more pronounced than before.

I clean my TDS meter with RO water, and keep my Hanna pH pen in RO water, which I replace every ~ 5 days

I realize that my water is probably far different than the norm, but for me, V+B works unbelievably well. There may be others that would turn in the same performance, but if so, I hadn't found them anywhere in the cabinet full of nutrients that I've accumulated over the years.

It is a little odd on the underfeeding side for me - it looks like a bunch of different deficiencies trying to show up, then I kick the feed up a little bit, and holy shit! I usually veg at an EC of 1.2 and flower at 1.5 - 1.6, and this seems to make most of my girls happy.

Currently flowering out 8 plants under 1000W, using straight V&B Dirty with no additives (for a baseline). Definitely interested to see how it plays out with no additives. I'll probably do another test run after this one with a few additives and see if what the difference is.

I use tap, but our water is about as close as you are going to get to RO without running it through a filter. It has 1.1ppm of Mg, 4.4ppm of Ca, a total alkalinity of 24, and a pH of 7.1.
I've found this post but would you please tell us the EC of your source water, rives?

It won't read on either of my meters, but the water analysis from the utility says that it has total dissolved solids of 85 ppm, so the EC is roughly .1.

mine comes out of the faucet at 380 TDS its loaded with sodium & Iron from the old galvanised pipes it runs through .... Ughhhhhh

I'm using 7 stages of filtration to get it clean !!! & have to replace the filters every 4 months , 6 months on a 2 year RO filter
