I'm considering purchasing another canoe. This time a solo or possibly a pack canoe. Lightweight Kevlar or a composite. My question is. Does anyone have experience going from a traditional seating position to the floor seating of a pack canoe? I have a bad back so I'm wondering if paddling from the lower position will be better or worse for my back.
No, but I had a kevlar boat. Best decision I ever made(kinda).
Mine was a Souris River...weighed 43 lbs.

Nice photo's guys. I just purchased another canoe for $400. It came with an Old Town electric motor and a removable motor mount. I don't think I'll ever use them. This canoe is an Old Town Osprey 15.5. It's a 2000 year model.

The hull is in very good shape. Just needs a light polish and some 303 Marine UV protectant. The cane in the seats were broken so I removed the old cane, refinished the frames and replaced the cane with webbing. I'm refinishing the yoke tonight. I also lucked out and found NOS Osprey decals as the ones on the canoes were peeled off and only the shadows of them remained. Here are a few picture of the canoe and my progress.

You said you had a Kevlar canoe. Why did you get rid of it? Not what you expected.
I took the SO to a river we'd done many times before, but the water was up. I was complacent, didn't lock-in the dry-bag, didn't notice how fast the water was, and there weren't any places to pull off. They were under water. Long story, shorter, we hit a shoot and the boat filled quickly. She broke a knee cap. I went over her, holding a paddle and the boat, watching the dry-bag float away.
Managed to flip the canoe and gather stuff. A dog came out an circled us, I thought it was a sign from God, but K said not to steal someone's dog.
After years in the basement, I sold it for $600, including roof-rack and accessories. He drove hundreds of miles to pick it up.

That's a beautiful looking canoe. It sounds like that guy got a fantastic deal. My son wants to learn how to canoe and portage. He's a big boy at 6'3" and about 200#'s. So, he'll be carrying the canoe. We'll go up into the Adirondack park in NY state. In the St.Regis Wilderness area where we will canoe and camp. I'll start him out on a small nearby pond to teach him some basic skills first.

All it needed was a coat of varnish. I even added kevlar and adhesive to the package. Maybe fix some of the patches from where Morgan missed a rock...faces in the trees, Maya glyphs in the rocks, under-water...good times.
I new a guy who could 1-arm roll a canoe, he was on the covers of magazines.
If you are carrying that boat, get kevlar. :tiphat:

The Osprey only weighs 68 pounds it's 11 pounds lighter than my Saranac 146. My Indian river canoe weighed about 85 pounds. I'm still looking for the right deal on a small solo canoe for myself. This is just going to be used for tandem trips with my son or girlfriend.
If I get back to Algonquin Park, or venture into Quetico Park. I'll just rent a canoe and not worry about transporting one.

Your canoe looks really nice. My father had a 12' sportsman. It was a lightweight aluminum pack canoe. I lived next door to an old fellow that helped design the first prototype sailing aluminum Grumman canoe. He actually worked for Grumman aircraft.
When he passed away his wife asked me if I wanted the canoe. Like a dummy I said no. I was concerned about the weight and never thought I'd use the sail.
Looking back at it now, I wish I'd have taken it.
I've paddled tippy canoes before. I found you get used to them pretty quickly.

Maybe it's just me I own one I bought for $75 .I took it out only once and dumped in it had to finish my trip with my ass on the floor lol. I own a regular aluminum Grumman as well but what my michicraft has over it has a keel and makes it much easier to turn on a dime. The Grumman I got is longer I take it out loaded up for camping .if your ever down at the Jersey Shore you gotta try some paddling in the pines there is a outfit called Mickey’s who runs trips on most all the rivers in south Jersey. They are all good. They call them rivers but they are really just slow running winding creeks, the scenery can't be beat

I've found that the cost of used canoes in my area have almost doubled in the past few years. There are lots of junk canoes available for a few hundred dollars. But, anything worth investing some time and money in are closer to $500.00. An ultralight Kevlar or carbon/Kevlar solo will run closer to $1500.00 used. I've been looking for a Old Town PACK canoe made from Royalex and they are even going for around $1000.00.
That sounds like a very nice canoeing area in the Pines. There are so many beautiful areas in the US and Canada we have to choose from. It's hard to decide where to paddle next.

Nice! maybe take it for a winter paddle on a nice day. I do sometimes I'm just sure to to bring a dry bag with a change of clothes just in case lol
Thanks @Old Piney . I can hold out until spring. I'm looking forward to ice fishing now. I'm still looking for a lighter solo for myself. Maybe something older that needs some work like this one.

Yes white water canoeist poo poo keels and it seems almost all canoes don't have them even though canoes aren't used on white water as much anymore. My michicraft has a keel , I suppose it's considered a lake canoe, it is a little less than an inch tall and runs the whole bottom. It's great for sharp turns and maintaining course
