I'm a huge car freak.

Sorry but I laughed really hard when I read reliable, no Euro car is reliable.

Wow Capt.Ahab you drove a 507?! Damn lucky mofo! I hope you had a smile on your face the whole time!

I am the biggest BMW fan there is ^_^ Except I only like the old ones.

I drive an 88 M3 and it is the love of my life~

It is my dream to own all the old bmws from a 2002, 88 M6, 88 M5, 95 M5, 97 M3, M1, Z1, 8 series, Z3M coupe.

New bmws dont have that raw feeling as the old ones do. Now its like the ultimate driving machine for the rich stuck up person. You only see pink popped collared guys driving the new M3 and you literally see them everywhere! And you treat it as if you saw a honda. While you rarely see the 88 M3 and are driven by true enthusiasts, and you cant help but stare with delight when you see them.

On old ones the console is angled torwards you so it feels like a cock pit as if the car is only for you, the drivers car. Now they are flat and absolutly ugly as hell.

I must agree, that's partly why I like the E36 rather than the newer models. You can feel the road better and it's more genuine a feeling. The newer ones are so disconnected from the road it just doesn't feel good.

that's the same with all car makers, newer cars feel different and more disconnected.

I have a 86 porsche 944 right now, power steering and it feels much more disconnected from the road than my old 78 porsche 924 with no power steering, that car sucked, slow, noisy but it had great road feel.

and so far my experience with bmws is although they have great performance, A LOT of things go on them. the engine is the most reliable part of the car. mine is at 300,000 mi and going strong.

things replaced so far, after owning it from 200,000 miles to 300,000 miles:

fuel pump
fuel injectors (increased MPG from 22-33 on highway)
4 wheel bearings
almost all rubber suspension parts
shock mounts
shocks
brake calipers
brake rotors
ball joints
transmission mounts
flex disc (rubber disc that connects driveshaft to differential)
thermostat
valve cover gasket
auxillary fan switch
fanbelt pulleys
motor mounts
cat. converter (original from '94, lasted 300,000 mi)

replaced it all on our own (saves tons of money)

:woohoo: older and wiser ,,the old m3 is over 250kg lighter than the new version, but the new 1 is slightly more powerfull ,,but the old 1 had style ,real style

and had guts

those are all normal wear items so that's not bad.

a lot of problems like oil leaks, timing belts breaking etc are not usually because of a bad design but just age and lack of maintenance.

the engine in my car seems to go forever also but if the timing belt snaps then the engine is toast so you have to watch out for that.

heres a pic of my car, not a BMW but still euro

245,000kms so far I've spend 2k in parts replacing oil seals, timing gears, rollers, timing belt, balance belt, drive belts, battery, cap, rotor, water pump, thermostat, new toyo tires.

still needs, motor mounts, tranny fluid, brake pads, oil pan gasket, interior work, due to water leaks and need to find the source of the water leaks in the interior.

mechanically the engine runs and drives fine, the manual transmission will grind from first to 2nd only when cold but is smooth when it warms up a bit.

BMW's have nice engines in some of their models(m3/m5) and i would def. drive a m3 or m5, especially pre 95 but i wouldnt buy a BWM. Reliability is too poor and if i wanted a sports car i would get something else. If i wanted a Luxury car, i would get a very nice Lexus or even the new Acura RL or RDX looks pretty nice too.
If i wanted a sports car i would get..........NSX like mentioned above or S2000 are pretty nice and cheap or lotus elise.

one car i would never own though is a Benz. I know people who own them and they all say the same thing....it will spend more time in the shop than on the road...

Well every euro car will be in the shop, just depends on how much the person cares about maintaining it or using it as a status symbol.

Yummy, nice porsche. My Fav Porsche is the 993.

Gel, I'm glad you know your codes, makes it easier to talk. The E36 and the E30 is always a huge argument lol. I love the go-cart feel of the E30. But hey I still love both cars!

BMW's are not going asian, BMW has always had designs of the future that other car companies take note of. But I do miss the box shape :( I can't wait for the 1 series coupe, its pretty much a modern E30 :)

mangled the NSX horsepower is to low for its price range. BTW in that vid all those car's were asian and one porsche. None of those drivers could drive either... Just because you have a nice car dosen't mean YOU can drive it well. I've seen a civic take M3's and its not cuz the M3 drivers were bad, but cuz the civic driver was good.

I dont' get why people would want an elise, I could understand for a track car and all but other wise its very uncomfortable. Thats why I love the old BMWs because they are amazing and still very comfortable.

the new gti also has some japanee look to it, still a nice car though.

i prefer the last m5 to the newer one in terms of the way it looks...although the new one has a v-10 and is just obscenely fast...i've seen two of them wrecked and my friend has seen three of them totaled on the side of the road already...ticket machines...
