What Island? That's fugged up man, sorry to hear that. The cams I got from Costco work awesome, an have motion detection that alerts you on your cell phone an you can directly record to your phone an take pics saved to your phone. They are 1080P an clear enough for facial recognition. Killer night vision too.

SmartCam HD Plus
Item #1013813

I got 4 of them

2 for the back to get a complete view an 1 for the side door and the last one inside.

Good luck :tiphat:

Wow.

Seriously? Dude, that sucks. Last night it was close to a full moon..... did notice that.

Allow me to offer my condolences, as meaningless as they might be. I do know what your feeling. My advice, right now, is to take a step back, don't do anything stupid, and take whatever time you need to work through the violation, and the repercussion part.

Then comes the taking stock and borrowing from Peter to pay Paul part. Needless to say this is gonna put a dent in your cashflow a month from now. Unless there is some fat you can live off of, best start the cutbacks now.

Next up, the fun part, you get to find out who your friends are. Let everyone know what happened. Your friends will step up and dig into their rooms. Sure, the're gonna dump their weaklings onto you, don't grumble, it's all gold to you. One here, two there, they'll add up. Object is to get back up on your feet again.... ASAP.

Security....

I don't know how you run your trip. I don't know what you have to defend. Without details I can only offer generalities.

You gotta learn how many. How they got in. You gotta think like your ripoffs. Where did they park? What trail did they take? Rips are creatures of habit, if it worked once they will do it again.

How did they swipe your plants? Did they bring a tool or just bust shit? Were they selective, or grab and go?

Is your land fenced? How much area you got? What about your neighbors? Any recent changes in ownership in the area?

Are you defending a greenhouse, or are the plants away from the house? Scattered or all together in one place?

And those are just the starter questions. There are a lot more for each answer. Even better, the answers have to work for what you are willing to do.

You have dogs? Surfed has a good idea. The best motion detector is a Cane Corso in your greenhouse.....ya don't need no stinkin' wifi for that.

Trail cams? ... Ehhh. I have one, set up, and unless they are in the right spot from a good angle, you got nuthin'..... except random pics of birds and bats. Pictures are great, if you want to get the cops involved......

Motion detectors? GE makes a cheap-assed weatherproof set that actually works. The range is horrible, about 50 feet, but you can put repeaters around that increase the range, and even string them in a line to reach out to a problem area. The repeaters do need power, and a dry nest though. Another plus is that the base unit can carry up to 16 detectors, so flooding approaches is easy to do. The GE motion detector units work very effectively at night, and in the rain, they do OK on cloudy days, but absolutely suck in the sunwarmed air..... it's not that they don't work, they do, just too well. It won't call your phone when it's activated, it just screams loud enough to wake the dead. If you need it to go to stealth mode, just pile five books on top of it.

Since we are all plugging shit we think works, allow me one more shameless attaboy. These are last years models, by now I'm sure they are even smaller and lighter. Should you decide to do the dog route, get the Garmin TT 100 collars for all of your dogs. By taking waypoints on your land, you can build a virtual fence that the dogs will not cross. By looking at a screen you can tell where the dog is and what she is doing. Should your dog escape at night, the collar has lights on it which you can turn on from miles away, lighting her up like a billboard, so drivers can see her. After a while with these collars, it's like you're always in the dogs ear, telling her what you want her to do. She becomes confident, instead of hesitating, she knows you are with her, even if all you're is a series of beeps.

So, let's say they got around the motion detectors, no reason to give them time to do the deed, or make it easy to get the deed done. Tie the plants down like I do, make them drag some string and bamboo out with them. The motion detectors may not be on but they blink, letting your thief think he is racing the clock. When you give him time to camp out, you lose big. Make him think that any second you, or worse yet your dogs will be there to see what the problem is.

If you can push your thief, he will make mistakes. Remember, if you make a mistake, it'll cost you some plants. If he makes the mistakes, it's hospital bound. A pushed thief becomes a smash and grab artist. In and out fast. This is where you have him. A low tech solution to fast rip is razor blades in the trunk. That's why I'm asking if he is cutting or busting. You want him to bust, winding up with a handfull of razor blades.

One last thought. When I got ripped, the first thing I did was stash some extras out where they would not be found. We have an El Nino year ahead. This year I doubt you'd need the greenhouse.

Anyway..... I am sorry to hear what happened. I hope you can put this to a stop. If you need anymore left field ideas don't hesitate to ask.

Sorry to hear about the rippers! Sucks so bad when someone ruins all the hard work.

Just wanted to say thanks OH for the tip on the Garmin TT 100 collar. That's exactly what my dog needs. Very cool, thanks bro.

Kinda aimless tonite.....and I'm afraid it's gonna show. Where do we go?

Might as well do the sugar post..... but there is no way I can express what is in my heart, and do this well. The first layoffs started today in the seed cane department. After all, when your done with sugar....last thing you need is seed cane. The final harvest started last week, from now on it's just burn and be done.

Watching this last domino fall is gonna hurt. When I first moved to Maui back in 1967, there were three sugar companies and four mills grinding cane on Maui. There were 14 mills in the state and they produced close to a quarter billion tons a year. Come next year....zero.

Sugar created Hawaii, the Hawaii of now. Without sugar it is debatable that we would even be the 50th state. Sugar brought water to deserts, and shifted the entire population of the State to where it sits today. The backlash against the sugar planters politicaly after WW2 exists today in the fact that almost every elected official in office today is a Democrat.

Can't forget the people. This weird melting pot that we live in was created by successive groups of immigrants, brought in from all over the damn place to work the Sugar fields. The shared experience that each group faced was once known by past groups, working the fields. This bond was one of the things that made intermarriage acceptable.

Ironically, Sugar planted the seed of it's own destruction here on Maui back in the early "60's and "70's. Pioneer Mill opened up some marginal land to developers. That land was called Kaanapali, the only thing there were long white sand beaches, which strangely enough were very popular with people trying to escape the Winter. A&B did the same with a little place called Wailea. Both were wildly successful. Both companies did very well, until they went and took the money, selling the resorts.

Looking back this is where they went wrong. These resorts were all DOWNWIND of existing canefields. Development went and encroached right up to the edge of where the cane started. Sugar here is a two year crop, for eighteen of those months there are no problems. The other six are hell. Cane is burned, raked, replanted, so for six of those months it's dust city. Of course, the people that bought those houses knew what they were getting into, but as soon as they moved in, here come the complaints and later lawsuits.

Then comes the water. And here it gets messy. Sugar needs enormous amounts of water. They built the ditches that bring the water from the wet side, but the Hawaiians want to let the streams flow to the ocean. The plantation's water rights have been under constant attack and things recently have turned against them in court.

So HC&S said fuck it. No sense fight the tide. They used to be willing to either make a little or lose a little on Sugar every year because it earned a lot of goodwill by keeping the fields green. Now they are catching it from both sides. In the long run all this land will be worth far more to them sold as houselots and golf courses. So that's what they will do.

I saw on IG that there is a petition to turn the Maui cane fields into industrial hemp fields.
I feel that might effectively end a lot of outdoor growers livelihoods as Maui is small and well known for its winds.
