Several hours of video footage showing Sandra Bland alive in jail have been released by officials in Texas – in a bid to quash online rumours that she died before arriving there.
The unedited recording shows Ms Bland - who was found hanged in her cell following an apparent suicide on 13 July - speaking to a jail worker and making a phone call.
Amid speculation the 28-year-old's body was placed on the jail's floor so a mugshot could be taken, the CCTV footage also shows Ms Bland standing up for the photograph.
Ms Bland, a black woman, was arrested on 10 July for a minor traffic offence and her death in custody has led activists to claim it is another example of police brutality against minorities.
Judge Trey Duhon has confirmed several Waller County officials have received death threats over the case, and the FBI is investigating the most serious.
"This is Sandra Bland. There's no other way around it. This video has not been altered or doctored in any way. These are the raw files.
"There's no footage that indicates to me that Ms Bland was treated unfairly or was mishandled or mistreated in any way, shape or form while she was in the Waller County Jail."
Ms Bland, who was from suburban Chicago, had been stopped by Officer Brian Encinia for failing to signal a lane change near Prairie View, Texas.
She was taken into custody after the incident escalated, and was facing allegations that she had kicked the state trooper in the shin.
Earlier this week, Houston station KTRK-TV released a voicemail that Ms Bland left a friend while in jail, in which she calmly expressed her frustration.
In the message, she said she is "still just at a loss for words honestly at this whole process".
She added: "How did switching lanes with no signal turn into all of this?"
On Monday, an initial toxicology report was released, which suggested that Ms Bland had "a substantial amount of marijuana in her system".
The county's sheriff has also confirmed that Ms Bland was not placed on suicide watch despite her telling them she had previously tried to take her own life with pills after losing a baby.
His office has admitted violating state rules on jail training and monitoring inmates.
That story raises an interesting question, since the whole incident from stopping her for a ticket, until when she was found dead, was only 3 days. If they have hours of footage showing her alive while in jail then that would suggest cameras that should have also caught the suicide. So where is the footage of that?
The problem seems to be that cops have either by training or it being a natural reaction from having been "on the job" for a while, have developed a reaction of "How dare you defy me". Clearly from the story that we have so far of the arrest Ms Bland defied orders such as "put out the cigarette" and "get out of the car." Which is perfectly natural since neither order should have been given since they had nothing to do with why she was stopped. The officer clearly lost it when this black woman defied him and escalated to "Get out of the car or I'll light you up" all while brandishing a Taser. A Taser is meant to be used when a suspect is being aggressive, had this woman got out of the car and tried to attack him then a Taser would have been warranted. It's not meant to be a tool to force people to obey you.
The bit about her being arrested because of kicking the officer, there's a problem with that. She never should have been asked to get out of her car for a routine traffic violation. The only things that should have happened is him asking for "license and registration", briefly explain the reason for the stop, and then go to his car to run the plates and license and write the ticket." Now had he done that and discovered she was wanted for some reason then asking her to get out would make sense. Ms Bland had it exactly right when she questioned "You doing this all for a failure to signal?" It's also interesting she was a fair bit taller then him. I suspect that between the defiant attitude (not entirely undeserved in my opinion) and the height difference intimidated the officer causing him to fly into a rage. Like "How dare she defy me".
Now to be entirely fair any intelligent people, especially black ones, since they are targeted more, should know you shouldn't risk irritating a police officer you might end up dead. She probably could have deescalated that situation as easily if not more easily then the cop, simply by being less defiant and more cooperative. One key thing we need to keep in mind though is "what might have been going thru her mind? Given all the things we've heard about police encounters with black people recently, she had every right to be terrified of what might be about to happen. This would obviously result in even greater resistance from Ms. Bland and obviously played into whenever the alleged kicking took place. I would say that the cop obviously laid his hands on her in an unnecessary perhaps even inappropriate manner. Which given the circumstances should be viewed as fair and reasonable. I mean I seriously doubt she just said to herself, "You know what? I'm gonna kick him for no good reason.....Yeah that's what I'm gonna do...kick him!."
Another important consideration, Ms Bland was there for a new job, probably a good career job since she was willing to relocate from way up north to way down south. Usually such things become happy turning points for when you are older and reflecting back on your past. So it really doesn't make sense she might kill herself when she was on the brink of what might be one of the happiest days of her life. It also doesn't fit well with her being so defiant to the police being new to town, black and not familiar with how the police were there in Texas. I know if it were me I would have kept everything at "yes sir/no sir" and followed instructions regarding the cigarette.
Still all that aside this woman never should have been sent to jail, fined perhaps but no time. I'm not going to say that I'm sure the cops killed her, but I do think something happened either between Ms Bland and the police/guards at the jail or Ms. Bland and other inmate(s) and the hanging was staged to cover up whatever happened. This would account for why they have hours of video showing Ms. Bland alive and nothing showing here attempting suicide. Perhaps the missing hours of Ms. Bland's stay at the jail showed something the police doesn't want anyone to see?
