BA, how many nurseries have you tried? surely there's one that stocks soil brands other than Culterra. have you gone and had a look yourself..?

HOTC

I ain't gonna break my back travelling miles bro. I been to about 6/7 nurseries local to me and I ain't found it yet. Just pisses me off that in this area all you seem to get is Culterra, they make bonsai mix, seedling soil, rose soil, germination soil. I'm just waiting for the day I find one called Ganj Mix. LOL

I'll find it, I always do in the end. BTW I'm gonna check out that hydro store in Melville this weekend....

Hey Nifty...

Sorry bro, apparently soil mixes that have wood chips in them tend to be more acidic. I got a thread running in the Female Seeds section of ICMag in which I queried why my Cinnamon seems to be suffering from nute burn. The guys from Female Seeds reckon it's to do with the wood chips making the soil more acidic...

that sucks BA.

in CPT there's at least 3/4 brands of soil at every nursery.

ahh okay.. so it increases acidity of the soil. all i heard was that roots prefer not to grow into chunky bits/wood/stones etc.

have fun at the hydro store, let us know what they're like!!

peace :D

I know there is a hydro store in Melville. Not sure of the name, but I'm going there in June and I'm sure to check it out. Charles from Windell is at the GardenEx in JHB this weekend looking to start a branch in JHB...
I missed the garden expo.
*sigh* I had to work. Windell never returns calls. Sadly.

Nice one.

Got another query for Jozi folk. Where can I get decent soil? All I see around is Culterra but it all seems to have a bit too much bark floating around in it.

Any help would be appreciated..

Make your own soil, although the culterra, isn't too bad.
I usually take 1 small bag herb potting soil, and half a 10ccm bag of lawn dressing and some filler (Go by trial and error. Test out your mix in a well drained pot).
I dig a large hole( usually up to a meter cubed), and fill up with the soil mix, and spread a mulch over.
I really would like to buy a worm bin.

This is great, because I generate a lot of organic waste in the kitchen, mostly coffee grounds, which are prone to moulding, and can't be used conventionally. With the worm bin, things would be much better.

nice for an organic grow, but not for chemical nutes!

i say just go for the Culterra, get your hands dirty and use 'em to fill pots and pick out the biggest wood chips. use perlite as well, obviously. just to make sure you don't get pH problems, you could get a pH kit and make your nutes solution slighty more alkaline to counter that acidity of the wood chips. you can work out how many drops of pH down you need if you mix the same amount of nutes each time so you don't have to continuously use the pH kit.

Guava #1 :D

When you get culterra, just pick up some plastic mesh screen.
Nail it to a wooden frame, and make a sieve of sorts.
Use it to clean the culterra. You can also use it, to clean worms out, if you have a worm bin.

Anyway, wrt everything, culterra is ok. You'll get ok results if you baby with nutrients, and the like.

It is an awful amount of pt though, for average product.
BA, which nurseries have you been to? Post a list, and I will do some running about to see what is available.
I'll start soon, and I will post pictures of what I find. :D

Thanks Malkop I'll have a think... hmmm... they've mostly been in the Fourways area where there seems to be one on every corner. Off the top of my head I've been to Plant Market at the Leaping frog, the Palm Nursery on Witkoppen, the Friesland nursery just up from the Palm, Nicolas's Plant even further up Witkoppen, Lifestyles, Garden nursery by Montecasino, Monkey Fountain near Victory Park. There are more but can't think of them now....

If I do find the Miraculous "Miracle Grow" (que God coming down from Heaven music) it'll probably be in some off the beaten track, side street kwekery! If you know where to get it then PM me please...

I've been using the seedling soil for ages now and find it works ok. Funny you should be talking about sieving the stuff. I've done that (& it's a bitch to do!) and got a really nice soil after taking the wood chips out, the seedling soil also comes with what looks like perlite in it. HOTC recommends putting more in the mix to help drainage, I'll give this a whirl in a month or so.

BTW - I think I managed to get my first clone on the go. Those of you who remember me from my OG days will know that I've tried and failed miserably a couple of times. This time I've taken a clip of the Cinnamon I've got growing and put it into a mug with a foil cover. Now this was over 2 weeks ago and the clone is still alive, 3 days ago I put it into an opaque plastic container and left it on the window sill. I've noticed now the last 2 days that there are small bumps forming on the end of the clone with one or two small root type growths coming from it. Thos ethat have cloned before will be able to tell me if this is looking good or not. Anyways, I'm gonna either do another hand watered bucket or maybe try and put this clone into my new untested bubbler.

What y'all think?

Oh yah!

BTW - I've been getting Swazi here in the North and it's been in matchboxes. I ain't seen matchboxes in ages, must be about 13/14 years!! Over the past 10 years I've been coming down from living in the UK for hols every year. Each time I scored it was either in baggy form form or in block form. Dunno if any one ever scored Swazi Block from the mintek building there in randburg, just by the home affairs type place. Must have been a banky in size but was pressed into a block which you had to break apart, that was nice stuff...

I'm also in conversation with a Malawian guy and with a bit of luck I should be getting a Malawi Cob tomorrow. I told the guy that I know what a cob is and he better not be trying to play me, he's promised but we'll have to see. Now Cob is definitely something I've not had for over a decade...

hi there... anyone know if there's anywhere in capetown where someone can score seeds of african varieties? my wife's going there on business... she won't really be willing to deal with dealer-types, it'd have to be something over the counter... does that sort of thing exist, like in europe?

thanks in advance

Dude. You've been a busy man. I know of a few more, and I am heading into the east rand this weekend, so I will keep a look out too.
