Also made some Ethanol extraction. Here is the result.

I dont have a scale but I can tell that I used a little bit more than a gramm of standart moroccan hash for this. What was left is about 0,35 I guess. Nice stuff :)

I'm sure that it's alot nicer smoke than the solvent laden hash "oil" from ketama. Making your own from moroccan hash is much better.

Jump want to say thank you for this thread. You are an artist in the purest sense of the word. Also thanks to the GW and all the rest for their imput to the discussion.

Read this thread about 3 times and many pages 10 times. Few questions if you would be so kind. Sorry if asked and already answered as I took notes and tried to avoid doing such.

1. I know your method of butane extraction has evolved and soak time increased dramatically. What in your opinion is currently the best soak duration for your butane extractions (assuming fresh frozen material) for buds vs. trim using the thermos method?

2. I see in the past you had good results rehydrating the weed before butane extraction. Do you still recommend this method vs. using dry material?

3. Initially in the thread you did 3 extractions. Butane soak--ethanol wash--butane direct flow. Are you still using this method and multiple extractions off same material.

My glorious MASTER PO(BHO) directed me to this thread......omg...this is def the master class, lol...you guys rock...no really, what y'all have going on, is serious. I am in awe, and I have some reading to do. Thanks, MASTERPO(BHO)!!!!!!

do a 2.5 hour soak. with well broken down material to allow a lot of contact with the solvent.

I like well broken down fresh frozen trim and larf

I believe that soak followed by wash then evaporate is the method and the flow is not needed if you use the thermos method and do a long soak.

I totally reserve the right to be wrong....

I think that brother jump has been taking a break. He did some calculations earlier which you may find helpful though. One thing that both jump and I might add is that the second extraction might yield roughly the same even if the extraction time is different and that doing the second extraction is the most important point. If you are pushed for time, then you can try 30 mins for the first extraction and 30 mins for the second extraction but as jump might say, it's a good idea to experiment for yourself to see what works best for you. It's also a good idea to keep some notes, so that you can compare with previous extractions.

Here is a couple pics of the product I have been making for a long time. I have always worked with dewaxed extracts since making "honey oil" in the 70's. I make these for special occasions and gifts for heady friends and family. This round came out a shade darker than usual but it was a full nug run of of purple urkel and I notice purps give me a slightly extract (anthos) I hope you enjoy the pics

I have been saving my waxes and am excited by the properties I am finding in them. Cheers all!

Amazing. Nominated for POTM!

Great thread here Jump...

so I've got everything i need to do this with including the stainless steel thermos, only im still a little confused about the method.

So I place some herb into the thermos and then place that and a can of butane into the freezer for about four hours or so........ then take everything outside and blast the butane into the now frozen thermos filled with herb then what exactly? this is where I kinda got lost.

I mean I understand how to winterize using ethanol (Everclear 190proof) only I dont understand how to use the thermos exactly

I already have a couple of SSTB from BB&B on hand and was thinking of just blasting straight into the SS Thermos.....would this way work?

thanks in advance guys...

As Jump is on break, I will pass on our procedure.

After soaking the material in the butane, we simply pour the butane through a strainer and filter into a collection dish and evaporate away the butane, by floating the collection dish in hot tap water.

We then handle the semi purged oil, the same as we would oil from a column.

Right ON GW!!!!

You are Too awesome... your like Gandolf the Gray Wolf when it comes to this you wizard you :)

OK so let me get this straight.....
1) So do you just drill two holes into the cap of the thermos???
one hole for the butane tip and the other one for air to pass through the thermos so it doesn't get to pressurized and blow up??
just makin sure i got it right so i don't blow MYSELF up. lol

2) throw your herb in thermos (How much herb do you usually place in it and how much butane? 1 oz per can still?)

3) screw on the lid and blast butane into it.
(Then Allow it to sit like this for how long before straining????)
(Do you freeze the strainer as well to allow the butane to 'pass' through it?

4) so then after you filter it into a collection dish and allow the butane to evaporate thats when I add Ethanol, mix, and place in freezer right?

Oh and btw, Thats the exact same thermos I have or pretty darn similar. lol.
mine is made by Nissan.
so do you use the inside screw on plastic cap for anything or should that just be discarded?

thanks again GW and posse :):):)

Hope ya dont mind if i jump in with a few additional q's.
When straining, how fine is the mesh? Im about to soak some kif, and was thinking i would have to strain first and the coffeefilter the liquid tane, to make sure no contaminants in the form of undissolved kif or dirt ends up in the oil. Also how dangerous do you consider the straining proces when using a metal strainer combined with the metal thermos?

I throw away the cork and drill three holes in the cup/lid, but you can drill holes in a jar lid or such, and just place it over the thermos opening, so as to keep your thermos intact.

I cut the material up into about 1/4" chunks and press it firmly down into the thermos, but do not pack it. I fill the thermos about 3/4" full of material, and freeze it and the butane to -18C/0F.

I fill the thermos to within a half inch of the top with chilled butane and drape a towel over it to keep air from blowing across it while soaking. I usually use a 30 minute wash for bragging rights, followed by a 1 hour 30 minute wash to glean the rest of the oil.

Nope, I don't freeze my strainer and it ends up clean.

Yup, as soon as the hot water bath has driven off the visable butane, I add the alcohol and stick it in the freezer for winterization.

Hee, hee, hee, yup, I have picked up a number of that size and larger at Goodwill for $4.99 to 14.99. I get only the ones with uncoated stainless liners.

I pitched the plastic inner liner of the stainless cap and just set the cap in place while injecting.

I use a French Chinoise strainer made for sauces, with about a 1mm mesh, and then run it through a commercial coffee filter.

The 300 series stainless used in both the thermos and the strainer shouldn't produce any sparks unless you really hammer them together.

So what your saying is that you took out the plastic inner piece of the cup/lid that actually "screwed" onto the thermos itself? And was this done so that plastic wouldn't leach into the product? great idea!

So now the lid just sits on top of the thermos w/o actually screwing on?

sorry, just trying to understand a little better. :)

Also, in your post to GDK above, are you saying here that you strain through a coffee filter that is sitting in your French Chinoise strainer? or do you filter twice?

In the pic above it doesn't look like you have a coffee filter inside the French Chamoise thats why I asked.

Yes, the lid just sits on top.

I filter twice if I'm not making an Absolute. I set the Chinoise inside a commercial coffee filter holder and let it run through both.

If I'm making an Absolute, I filter again after redissolving in ethanol and again after winterizing.

Here are pictures of the Chinoise and the commercial coffee filter holder.

So, I've decided to read this thread start to finish, got this far (already forgot what page it is from) and have just taken a dab of what I hope is my last purchased "store bought" shatter. This picture is fucking insane. It is a oil genie with a face and his arms crossed. Really enjoying the freak out :) thanks for this.

I can't wait to post pics of my very first run.
