A walk through Hempy's Garden

Just popping in for a quick update.

Things didn't work out in the tropics so I've moved back to West By God Virginia. I'm not in a location I can setup the garden so I've been dry for a few months.

I'm really hatin' life because I can't grow or find smoke. It's really getting bad because weed was my medicine to keep me sane and pain free. Some days are are better than others, but the better days are coming farther and farther apart.

Anyway, I can't imagine when I'll be able to get growing again if ever, so this thread is basically over.

Cheers
Hempy

PS: Hovz, you should just pick up a second 8 unit system.

Some tips

Awesome garden Hempy, i really like your setup. I just ordered a General Hydroponics WaterFarm Controller Kit and there is 8 buckets. I'm allowed to have 15 plants legally so is there a way i can add on 3-6 buckets? I already have the 3 part gh nutrients, and planning on trying the lucas formula this time around, because my last grow was all leaves and no buds. I also ordered a continuous tds/ph monitor so that should help me a lot. So you still use 2x600w? i have a 600 w hps and 2x1000 watt mh.

I know Waterfarms pretty well. It is very easy to add units..and it is VERY important that you add circulation to the units as well. It is easy as pie.

In their normal configuration, Waterfarms are stagnant basically...the water moves only when the levels drop and the float switch activates the reserve to add water. This means radically different values over the entire grow. All you have to do is add a small fountain pump..submersible..to the bottom reservoir...disable the float switch...have the p[ump send the water to the upper reservoir and from there directly to the first growing unit in line.

Then, you link the units together with a few T's and Ell's...at the last unit in series, simply run a piece of tubing directly across to the units at the other end, and they are all linked together as one. The pump sends the water up into the res..where it flows by gravity to the units...then the water is pulled from the controller unit next to the res.and into the bottom res. where it is pumped back into the top one...simple.

This way you can run as many units as you like..they all recirculate constantly...and you can check values at the reservoir instead of having to check each and every unit as you must if you use the stagnant method.

Materials needed? One small pump...a few l's and t's and a small length of tubing. One note: You must adjust the flow from the pump to the flow out to the units..if the pump is sending water too fast into the top res. it will overflow..you must adjust the pump slower and the best bet is to have valves at the ends of the runs so you can slow or speed up the flow out to the units.

One balanced, this will run by itself easily and will insure that the nutes are all distributed evenly. If i could find a way to draw a pic here I would illustrate it, but it is simple. Lay out the buckets across from each other...link the last two at the ends across from each other with a T and an L so the water flows across and into the end unit..install the pump in lower res...disable float switch...run tube from upper res. directly ( thru a valve) to the first unit in line..and thats it!!

I grew tired of fooling with the size of the waterfarms and now am getting my new 24 site Aerojet going...but Waterfarms are rgeat for growth and ease of operation. You need'nt run the units all the time...30 minutes on and 30 off will insure that the nutes get flowing and distributed evenly all over.

If all that doesn't make any sense, let me know and I will try and sketch it and find a way to post it..hope this helps..The flora series should be all you need, but other additives are Ok as well as long as you balance it.

The meter should be a big help...I have a Hanna Combo GroChek that gives all readings constantly and that helps with values being steady. After that, just watch the water temps and go for it!!

Haven't read a word of this thread except this pg...but if you are in fact the one and only "Hempy"...I've taken my fair share of shots at ya on another forum. I don't regret any of'em.

But I am sorry to hear you are in some dire straights and I sincerely hope things improve for you Hempy.
