What are the parental plants used in the current fem offering ?

I have a beautiful one week seedling that is overpowering the whole tent with a weed/hot bread/grains/dirty socks smell...is that common ? I though that malawi is supposed to have a discreet smell ?

Did anyone else find their Malawi to be particularly susceptible to caterpillars from moths? More so then other varieties?

About two weeks from harvest after some heavy rains I got absolutely hammered. Found over 100 and normally I don't get more than a couple dozen per plant.

Just wondering if Malawi has a particularly attractive terp to moths? Maybe it was just a bad season here.

Hi achille,

Malawi feminized release is still produced by pairing our 2 most devastating and elite Malawi mothers:
Old Malawi Killer (P1) and New Malawi Killer (P·), the genetics of the fem release has not changed since 2015.

Plants leaning towards the New Killer are usually smellier than the ones closer to the Old Killer. Best wishes!

Sorry to hear it Nexus7,

It's important to check the plants in depth during flowering to look for caterpillars, especially in strains of long and dense colas like Malawi,
and after any rain during flowering, when it is the moment that a new wave of young caterpillars will appear.

Remove them by hand if you have only a few plants that you can explore and attend in detail,
and/or spray with bacillus thuringiensis in case it's a common problem in the outdoor gardens of your area.

Malawi is not particularly more or less prone to have caterpillars than other strains.
The damage that caterpillars can produce in a garden vary a lot depending on the season too.

Hope you managed to save enough good quality buds to experience this strain,
when Malawi is well grown outdoors and it is brought to its full ripeness potential then the outcome is of outstanding potency.

That's ok dubi. These things happen.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to properly attend my Malawi this season. Also it's in a different spot to previous seasons so that might be a factor too. But normally I would inspect daily and pick off by hand (or wooden skewer).

No doubt there will still be some intact buds to sample in a couple weeks. She was doing so lovely up until that point. Very easy to grow, vigorous and good general pest resistance. I got the early flowering new killer pheno, strong sweet lemon aroma and good frost.

Can't wait to try this one.

Nexus7: Caterpillars are unpredictable season to season. If you get them once you will get them again sooner or later. I learned this the hard way. While you could try to do visual inspection and hand removal, I suggest you find a Bacillus Thuringiensis product that can be sprayed at regular intervals as flowering commences and well into it.

It is effective and works much better than random visual inspection ever could. Also you can blend it with anti fungal (botrytis) bacillus spray products and prevent both with the same spray mix. I do it every season because by the time you see the need it's already too late. So it's better to just do it every year. It isn't expensive at all, not hard to do once a week, and you will never regret it. These bacillus sprays are natural and organic and DO NOT taint the flowers in any way, even when done within days of harvest.

Compared to the loss that can happen after some months of work, for me it's essential. Since I started doing it I no longer experience losses.

Thank you Dubi ! I am impressed by my Malawi fem, it has an "evil" appearance, between a datura and a stinging nettle, very vigorous, smelly and branchy. Very distinctive among the other plants.

Was online at Ace Seeds and asked my wife what she would like in stock and she said - Love the Golden Tiger, Love the Panama, Snow Moon was interesting and beautiful but....... Nothing beats the good old Malawi!

Just ordered a 10 pack of Malawi standard, a 10 pack of Malawi x PCK standard, and we are so thankful for the 10 Bangi Haze freebies!

Still have more Snow Moon and GT seeds. Oh and currently 23 days into 12/12 on some Snow Moon (m) x Golden Tiger!

This home is an Ace Seeds home. Love you all at Ace!

hello, im back.
things didnt exactly go smoothly when i was away for almost 3 weeks, wasnt a good idea to think ahead and leave a 10l bucket of mild nut water for friend to use, old leaves started dying and the watering schedule didnt hold as planned. most of the time friend come to check it out it was looping reallly badly. im just glad it didnt die.

repotted / cropped two weeks ago and back to pure ro watering.

Hi captainrelief,

Don't worry, i'm sure she will recover good health and the new growth will be fine and vigorous, especially after the transplant, Malawi responds in growth very well and fast when the problems are corrected.

thank you for the encouragement, we surely are making progress tho as the previous problems halted we are having new ones, 3 weeks since the transplant. 1 week since the flip.

do we think the paleness of the new grow tips are in the safeside?

attachment.php

scretch is starting to happen, canopy level aint as uniform anymore.
attachment.php

and at the bottom (which is really crowded btw, i should get in there with scissors and cut all the new shoot off.) 50litérs of fresh medium doesnt seem to carry further than this, while on only pure RO.

tho must be said, ihave no way of knowing how the roots have dug in, how much more there is still reserves left as time goes by and root mass gets bigger and bigger. plan is to give atleast one more time thru out blast on pure RO and see what happens. just be on the safe side. i have no will to start dragging the pot to shower for flush.

since it should be atleast 1 more week before i can even start seeing early flower dev i guess its good way to go about it. that being if i learned anything from this thread and flowering phases and times of the mal. tho mine is fem, most info in here is for regs.

attachment.php

other upcoming thought: am i far off with thinking that the shape of the plant and the training it has taken, should limit the overall scretch abit? i have like 1 meter space before it starts hitting the burning distance to cooltubeline.600mh+600spna positioned on the sidewalls, far as possible from each other, tilted to point to center.

im kinda wondering could i make it by if i forgot the net screen, and let her show his natural colors from now on. dont ask me why :D

well i like to be able to walk around in there. atleast as it is now. how it is in a 1 month...

Are you in coco? also what strength nutes you need coco specific nutes or you will need to add cal/mag to compensate.
Malawi is super resilient and you can thin out prune the lower growth to encourage better buds.
I grow Malawi and crosses of Malawi and they like feeding. I usually use an EC of 1.6 to 1.8 total EC with extra flowering nutes when the flowers are established.
Dont over think it they are very strong growers and hard to kill if the lower leaves start fading before flowers are fully formed gently increase the feeds slowly until it stops.

What is the ideal harvest time? Typical cloudy trichs with a few amber? Mine is nice & frosty with clear/cloudy trichs at 98 days.

Everyone is different in what they want/like.
Harvest a sample brach while letting the rest go longer is my preferred way to gain a better understanding of plant in question.
In general i prefer the early picked samples for effects but taste and smoothness can be lacking.

tbd, that looks good to me as it is.
Nice work.
