A Taste of Africa from Malawi

here they are. first two are Malawi Fem. second two are the Purple Malawi. PM1 is the one that suffered the loss of a cotyledon. it has a red stem and lagging a bit behind. I wonder what she will be like when she's older. :)

PM2 is the most vigorous grower out of the 4. M1 & M2 have the same colored stems and growing at a steady pace.

all in all, I feel it is going to be quite a pleasure growing these plants. having indica hybrids out in our climate is quite the experience. a lot of hard work and sometimes have to cut major losses. we shall see how Sativa genetics fair in a climate where it thrives.

hard rain

Hi hard rain,

I'm glad you are enjoying the smells and resin production of your Malawi.
Do you use only LEDs for the flowering ?

Always interesting to see how the genetics performs with different kind of lights.
Hi Dubi, yes at the moment I'm using a Mars2 700 which I guess uses about 350w. It was to replace a 400w HPS during summer when it gets too hot. The mars is fine but i will upgrade to Cree Cobs in the near future. Wish I had got the best but funds didn't permit it at the time.

The Malawi is now at 14 weeks and there are some amber trichomes on the older portions of the buds. What is the consensus on when to harvest? The buds are still putting out new pistils but i think it's near the end. Are people waiting for lots of amber or is it best to harvest sooner? I was thinking maybe 2-3 more weeks?

the wet weight without the long empty stem below is 238 gram, come from 420ml of media with a single irrigation per day,
plant flowered alongside others (3-8, perp.) under a single 100w cmh
no joke

You're set to be stoney baloney after a nice cure!

I have a pair of Malawi regs coming back from transplant shock moving from peat to rooters but they are hanging in there and should pull through. Cannot wait for these.

Do you guys veg these under 24/0??

Heres my only malawi fem out of 9 seeds the mail service crushed. She's right around the 8 wk mark.

Anyone with experience in this strain have a guess as to which pheno this looks most like? Hoping she goes 14-15 wks looking for a heavyweight knockout! Lol

Looks a lot quicker than 14 weaker to me but hard to say without more info on trichomes etc...

My 2 Malawi's seem to have survived transplanting and are doing much better now that they are vegging in dwc for starters. Gonna transplant to hydroton drip for bloom!

outdoor malawi in caribbean sun update

outdoor malawi in caribbean sun update

wow. a pleasure to grow indeed. everytime I visit the plants, they are all standing praying. they definitely love the great outdoors. a few days of overcast weather has slowed their march but they quickly bounced back. one of the malawis has been targeted by this one caterpillar. i spotted one once but lost it when it fell off my fingers into the peat mix and between the perlite. the other had a leaf nibbled off. all in all, PM1 is the strongest grower so far. the other ones though despite exhibiting the characteristics that show they are happy, are much smaller. wonder if this is due to gene expression, stress from the attacks or something i've done. taking notes every visit and letting nature do its thing. trying to intervene intelligently. praying to jah and keeping my utility kit in order to make this a successful season.

also something interesting to note about three of the 4 Malawi's is that 3 show purple colours either in the stalk or as a small pigment in the new growth. very very interesting because only 2 Purple Malawi seeds germinated and the other 2 are Malawi. M1 is the girl with purple growth. can't get a close up with my phone and don't have a good enough camera to take a snapshot. will see what i can do about that in the future.

Looking good they should love your climate, just make sure they have plenty of water in the vegging phase and feed lightly if they need it. You should get some massive plants if you do.

thank you for the advice and good vibes Tangwena :)

the one thing I'm concerned about is feeding it enough or too much. I'm only watering with pure water as I've pre-mixed this promix with blood meal, neem meal, worm castings, bone meal, garden gypsum. all with Tom Hills measurements(the blood meal to replace the chicken manure and neem meal to protect against pests + i hear good reviews over using it in the medium). first time using this mix & this genetic variety, so a lot of experimentation going on this year. I have to figure out when to give the smart pot a good watering to get a PH reading of the run off. it's been raining lately and haven't had the need to water the plants myself.

anyone have experience here how Malawi fairs with fungus outdoors? this would be helpful to know.

I believe a forum member managed to finish a cutting in NW Europe, so if that's not an exceptional pheno (apart from the flowering time), Malawi is pretty sturdy :)

My malawi experience was opposite, it never finished until first week of december and molded pretty badly.
Conditions were bad all autumn with low temperatures but the angola thai besides the malawi handled it much better and producing mold free buds. The end product was not good really but i believe in a good climate they woukd both be much different.
My malawi was the old one, started flowering at 12/12 so end of september at 45N.
There seem to be much faster phenos in the newer releases of malawi. Maybe give it a try.

I feel for you guys in colder climates, its very hard to get tropical type sativas to perform in those climates, they love the sun and dry finishing climates.
But some get lucky like Mad Mac, he had an early Malawi finish but the power would not be as good as in Spain or anywhere else sunny. i grow in Australia and its very warm most of the time.
My main problem is goats and kangaroos eating the plants. We all have our problems ha ha

my Malawi has been slow coming out the gate. shes starting to pick up now though bc we got high 70f temps all this week end and monday is gonna be in the 80s,so im exspecting them to have a big growth spurt this week. they are only 17 days old since germination though. i cant wait to see how big this bitch gets. i will be putting her in a 65 gallon huglekultuer bed/hole.

hope all goes well in your grow, Kygiacomo! I hope to soon be able to grow some of these lovely ladies in bigger medium capacity such as yourself. this year i'm going with 20gal and 15gal. still, at the pace the PM1 is going at, i think i'm going to need to go bigger next time! praise jah
