Hiya D9 - hope you don't mind me posting some pics in your thread. There are more in my own thread for anyone interested.

I screened 2X 50 lb bags of turface all sports thru a nylon gymbag that I stretched over a 5 gal bucket. I could manipulate the size of the screen by stretching the nylon or by letting it bunch up. I screen the 2 bags fairly well i think. the 2 bags yielded 110.4 lbs of turface which I rejected 44.8 lbs (40.58%) and accepted 65.6 lbs (59.42%) of the media.
I thoroughly rinsed the 65.6 lbs of turface all sports.

here are the results, these samples are both unwashed tho

I know flashes and lighting can affect how an image appears so i took some with no flash too

thank you! the pile on the left looks real good and since i got a 30% loss with window screen it does look just like turface to me. you got a bit more loss because of the nylon but it's very usable.

On a scale of 1-10....this turface screening contraption was mostly successful and only partly a disaster. It works but it needs a bit of work, too. Thought you all might get a laugh out of this ridiculousness. The sander vibrates the turface down over the screen and through the spray into a bucket. What I really need is a minion to do all my work for me so I don't continue making projects like this.

not bad at all. I wonder if we can borrow any ideas from the gold mining people that do sluicing.

what about just rinsing the rock down the screen with water pressure. wouldn't that do it? can probably get a bag done in a couple minutes.

Yeah, I tried that but it doesn't seem to filter the smaller particles as well when wet. They kinda stick to the bigger rocks instead of going through the screen. Maybe with more water pressure and higher sidewalls to avoid splashing it out everywhere?

I like the sluice box idea, too. I was talking that over with a buddy in Eastern Oregon who pans gold for a living and he thinks he has something that'll work. I'll see him in a few weeks so I'll get back with that information then. More water would really help and a little expanded metal under the screen with the cross bar thingies would do great, IMO. I'm gonna build one and find out!

Theres a "turface auto screener" video on youtube. The guy mounted a 1600 rpm motor with a unbalanced rod attached to the shaft, vibrating the frame of the screening table...pretty slick!

What is "ppk"

top feed, recirculating, with a wick/ drain that comes out the bottom of the flower pot, that helps reduce the pwt, n creates a hydraulic n wicking action for extra safety if elec goes out or pump fails. also the wick allows the plant to never run out of water or nutrients between watering cycles. roots grow in medium n not water, so no need to cool water like rdwc. almost no problems with root disease due to water temps or anaerobic conditions.

Timer question:

I have been looking at timers for this application and am beginning to think I may want to build my own in order to get the functionality I would like for a reasonable cost.

Then reality set in.... The time involved, materials cost and shipping make it less attractive to take on when I only need 3 of them. If I was going to build 30-40 of them it would be worth while.

The time I have in mind would have two receptacles and support a 20 amp load. It would have two controls. One for "on time" that can be set from 0-255 seconds in one second increments. The second one for "off time" can be set from 0 to 255 minutes in one minute increments.

Simple & reasonably priced($35?). Well... Simple to me... I have been counting in binary for 00011110 years.

The settings would be made via 2 dip switches (pic below) one for "on time" the other for "off time".

Do you all think this would be of interest to other growers?

Thanks.
