a ppk for a 6 plant limit

Very nice SecondAttempt. What is the fabric in the bottom?

Might ditch my current design for that. I might reduce the overall # of sites though because I feel like there will be quite a bit of over-crowding. Maybe 9 sites? Wonder what the look on the cashiers face will be when I check out with 18 16" sink tail pipes.

I am playing around with ideas for changing up my vegging sites. Currently it is 6 1qt containers on top of one of those 27gal black totes w/ yellow lid. I was using fabric wick, but I am finding that I am having issues with the media not draining well, and the fabric wicks get pretty nasty looking. I am considering trying out a 3/4" media wick somehow. My current idea is to use grommets in the bottom of the 1qt containers, then slide in 3/4" PVC and perforate it quite a bit, both below and above where it enters the 1qt container. I will try a prototype tonight and post some pics, but was wondering if anyone else is doing or has seen miniature PPKs with media wicks. thanks

the cloth wicks are just for rooting. but i think i've found a way the make a small media wick that would fit those containers. you do yours and i'll do mine, maybe we can come up with a solution.

i think the 1.5" tailpipes are too large. i think i've found a fitting that is about 3/4" that could be used with vinyl tubing for a tailpiece. i saw one at HD's the other day. i'll go get it.

O boy I set something off... I built/posted this a long time ago as a low maintenance mother keeper.. hence they grew too fast. Thought I could keep mothers in it, didn't work for that.

Pots are 5x5 or 5.5x5.5 from my local growstore nothing special... I ordered a crazy amount of tailpieces off HD website.. No cashier to worry about.

Fabric is landscape fabric to keep the turface from pouring out the drain holes in the bottom.

This thing has been sitting idle for awhile, I found an awesome pheno of Bay 11 that would SOG well... maybe I'll fire her up.

5.5" KORD is how you'll find those pots D9

typically around .70/ea or so. If you buy in QTY you can sometimes get them around .45/ea or so, or at least that's been my experience. I typically use these pots as my veg coco pot before going into smart pots.

I wanna see that little yellow strong box flipped from root. Could be a great little closet setup for those that don't have the room for big ppk vert.....if they don't just crowd out because of ppk insanity.. Go for it SA, give that mini PPK a second attempt ;) !

I was thinking about doing something really similar with vinyl tubing and a regular hydro store 3/4" drain fitting. I was thinking 1" though.. too large?

What strength were you feeding them? What about pulses? I would guess that if you fed them 300ppm and only pulsed once a day they wouldn't grow out of control. But I imagine that just about any small mom would need pruning. When I finish my set up I'd like to just be able to check on it every weekend. Top off the res, make sure lights are high enough, prune back the moms, then close it back up. I mean I'd still open it about every day just to look.

So I ended up working on 2 types of top container last night. Both intended for use on the 27 gallon tubs.

Here was my first idea using 3/4" fender grommets. However, I didn't read carefully and realized it will only fit 1/2" PVC due to the OD of the PVC. 3/4" ID of the grommet, and 0.84" OD of the PVC make a nice snug fit. Also seems like it would be easy to pop the tail pieces off for cleaning, but holds them well at the same time.

As you can see there will be a little bit, maybe 1/4" of water that cannot drain due to the height of the grommet inside of the container. I did not think it would be a major issue though. I did not move forward with perforating the wick, because I am not sure that 1/2" media wick is sufficient to get the proper capillary action.

So back to the store, got some new pots. I couldn't find 5.5"x5.5" anywhere and am impatient so I grabbed these 15cm x 15cm ones (3.5L). They seems to be heavier and more robust than the black ones I have used in the past.

Assembly line for drilling

Had to add screen to the bottom. This was a pain and probably an easier way to do it. The problem was the interior walls are not flat so I couldn't just cut a square piece to drop in. Instead I cut 4 pieces of screen and put them in the corners with a dab of gorilla glue (100% water proof, solvent free).

So that was a huge PITA but only took about an hour to do 32 pots. These will take just standard 1 1/2" tailpieces. Probably will not even bother adding glue as I am not concerned about a little leakage there.

I can fit 8 of the 15cm x 15cm pots on one tote. I think I could squeeze 12 or more of the 1qt containers. Since I really only flower 6 plants, I think I'll be fine with just 32 sites. 8 moms, 8 seed testers, 8 seed clones for sexing, 8 clones for flower (pick best 6). Anyway, some more R&D needs to be done before I rule out the 1qt size. It is just that the 1/2" wick looks so tiny... but then again they work okay now with fabric wicks so I don't know...

D9, were/are you dropping un-rooted clones directly into the sites to root? Any tips on that? I really want to start rooting cuts directly in 8822 and skip these plugs which I think are causing me issues.

The bottom of my pots weren't flat either, maybe not as drastic as yours but I just used squares of landscape fabric and once filled the turface weighed them down in the corners.

I just had a flashback to when this was used... I transplanted the monsters this vegged into my big system and the rootball almost always took the landscape fabric with it. Just a heads up, although you epoxied your screens so you may not have to deal with that.

I was looking at tailpieces and I think it was home depot that had a standard 6" long 1.5" diameter tail piece that would have that same issue.

If you drill holes like d9 did in the feed pans that will not only help with the pulses going down through the medium and dripping into the res to prevent that protein layer, but it would also help drain that 1/4" of liquid sitting there.

CO2 toxicity....help

CO2 toxicity....help

I know this isn't the right place to post this but I always get great advice from the PPK communit . If you don't want this here, please delete it. This is a copy from my infirmary post:

I'm looking for a little help and advice...

I'm running a sealed 15' x 15' room with 3ton AC, currently 7400 watts, and CO2 injection. I have 10 plants in a PPK setup with 1.2EC and 5.8pH. Plants are in veg right now and are all about 36"+ and were all extremely healthy.

I visited the grow on Saturday to tie up some loose ends before I flip (planned to flip this week sometime). Everything was great! I stopped by this morning on my way to work just to check H2O and potentially adjust rooms Temps as I dial in AC and everything turned into a GIANT disaster. I am sick to my stomach just looking at the room.

Before u went into the room, I looked at my Autopilot greenhouse master controller to check room temp. Temp and humidity were spot on however, CO2 was thru the roof....9500ppm. Check the bottle and it was empty (was relatively new bottle). At some point between Saturday around 5:00pm and this morning at 7:00am the bottle dumped into the room. I haven't confirmed whether the solenoid valve froze or the controller is messed up.

The plants look terrible. They definitely are suffering from CO2 toxicity. I immediately vented the room and entire space but now I don't know what to do. ~75% of the leaves are burned/curled/dry.

What should I do? Will these plants bounce back? I know old growth will not recover but can I expect the plants to recover? I have been vegging these for a while as I finished the room so they are large. Should I still flower these or is it a lost cause. I don't have clones right now as I planned to clones these before flip, however, I can probably get rooted clones if I should scrap the current plants.

Please give me advice on what to do. I don't want to waste time with these plants if it's not worth it but I don't want to scrap them if they are salvageable.

Thanks for the reply D9. PPK is performing flawlessly. Plants were in incredible health before this happened. I'll get some pics up later today.

I was able to post a few pics in the infirmary. After work I'll try to take some more.

Please let me know what I should do.

Thanks.

Oregon goes rec at midnight...I have four more plants to grow now! Might as well try this out, right? (the mix res is sitting on the deck right next to where I took the pic from)
