In my town you'd be hard pressed to get 1 acre and a 2 story house for less than 1000000, a house down the street sold for 5 million and was about 3/4 acre of land... Its silly! Glad I got in while prices were low!

Hell you guys shoot high...

I'd be happy with just 2-5 hectares of land in southern spain. Enough to be self sufficient..

HCSmyth, as far as generators go, why not just get free power from wind or hydro electricity? Could build a 2000w PM generator for under $1000.

Boy, ya'll certainly burst my bubble! Here I'm sitting back thinking I'm OK, poor but happy. Going to work till my dying day.

Then you go flashing dream homes at me. Guess I still got time to pick up a couple lotto tickets. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Yeah, but a lot of us old farts are looking for a place to retire,so work ain't necessarily a problem.

I don't think I could deal with those winters though.

If you move into Vermont you can find homes in Chittenden County for $350,00-$2,000,000. The price depends on what town from there, but as long as you're in Chittenden county you're children are set. It has one of the better education programs. If you don't have/intend to have children then you can find homes with that amount of acreage for $150,000-$300,000.

It is Vermont though, so it's not all meadow, there's a good chance a lot of your acreage is woods. Not to say you can't find a completely open lot, but they're a bit tougher to come by.

yeah but living in a remot place sucks like in Alaska. Also places where land is cheap is usually where there are no jobs in a remote place, thus where will you work to make money.

holly crap, you guys would actually go live in a remote house like in that in Alaska?

are also going to have a Cesna to fly to the nearest city....

I would be too scared to live in a remote place like that. What if something happens, you can't even get any help.

Everything that happens in the woods is predictable, or at least you can prepare for it. It's living in the city that's scary man, you could be walking by the target of some drive by and bam slug in the head. If I had the money I'd move to Alaska, but it's an expensive state to live in (not neccessarily land wise).

well in Alaska there are a lot of scarey criminals for sure hiding there, if you don't want to have someone find you, you usually go to Alaska....

other than that in the woods, you can be attacked by bears etc. I'm sure. Also what happens say you have some kind of an accident in that remote location.

other things can happen to, landslides, flooding etc. In the winter wouldn't just be stuck in the house for like 6 months or longer?

Also isn't Alaska where it's dark day and night for like half the year?

Alaska sounds like the worst place to live ever kind of like prison. Maybe it would be cool for someone like me with no social life etc. you can even committ suicide in Alaska and no one would even know.

Meh, if you're that deep in you're going to NEED a good rifle (or two) and a good pistol for sure. However bears aren't all the movies hype them up to be. Despite what they show you bears aren't sadistic hunters. They're also not by any deffinition stealthy, unless you stumble upon a sleeping bear you will hear them far before they see you.

Landslides happen everywhere, and as far as flooding have you heard of Katrina? These things happen. But are easy enough to circumvent. A good land plot makes these things avoidable. Either way your fears are a bit far fetched. Statistically you are more likely to die in a car accident than being malled by a bear, even if you live in Alaska.

Nice, right next to the river too, so you could run hydro power, and plenty of it (assuming it doesn't freeze solid :D).

That's a good find if you had the cash to do it right.

The whole point of being self sufficient in the bush is that you have to work for money as little as possible, if at all.

I know a chap that lives of 12K CAD a year in a small house he built himself, and is happier and way more fulfilled than anyone I have ever met in a city.
