Time for this weeks update, LED plants are starting to gain a little weight and fill out more!

Side By Side Lights On....

Side By Side Lights Off...

Hid Side...

Led Side...

Side By Side Largest Plant, HID on the Left, LED on the Right...

HID Plant!!!

LED Plant!!!

Considering you are not using nearly the same power to grow these plants it's sort of a win/win situation for those LED's. I am impressed with the new technology. Now if the prices come down a little I might be interested, the savings alone in power would probably be wort it.

Blaze, this comparison grow is a mighty fine idea. this is the first time I really looked over the forum, and it seems I picked a winning thread to put my first post. I've been debating whether to go with HID or LED, and I'm definitely subscribing to your thread to see what happens!

real nice blaze1. looks like the 205w LED will definitely out perform a 250 HPS.. question. I had a friend working out an LED and he had a softer tissued, almost mushy stems. do the 2 different lights put out the same texture as eachother?

Yeah deffinantly same texture, Seems the leds stems are slightly thinner in diameter but overall the texture is the same nice hard stalks no mushyness or anything of the sort, Completely normal growth just a little behind the HID.

Maybe he had a poor quality LED light or he done something else to cause it, I cannot speak for all LEDS just this 205w penetrator...

I skipped around when reading this thread. There may have been some talk about the comparison of wattage. I was under the impression that one needed 50w per sq foot of HID light and only
5w per sq ft of LED. Could someone clarify what is the correct wts?

I think 5w is too low. This is a 205w light, and from the manufacturer:

Recommended Lighting Area: 30" x 30" @ 6" above your canopy. Maximum Coverage Area: 36" x 36" @ 12"

So they are recommending roughly 35 to 40 watts per sq ft for flowering.

Blaze, it was a friend trying to engineer his own. he made a 500w version and pulled 10 zips of some really dank buds, but there was no heat to help open stoma so he added a space heater to the room. your not doing blaze buckets anymore? you get the mites worked out?

I wanna 7' round LED cylender for a coli!!!

hey blaze, great grow! congrats.

just started using leds and i observed a reduced smell and bigger water needs compared to the plants under hids. what do you think about that?

Just like 50wspf is generally regarded as the minimum for HID, it seems that 30-35wpsf is the minimum with LED.

Why grow with the minimum though? :)

I thought the idea of the LED lights was to save on the power bill. If the savings is only 15 to 20 wpsf, I don't see where the savings is after you take into account the cost of the lights and the slightly lesser yield.

It's safety and heat for me. We can see LED can produce some great flowers too. Anyway for me they would be ideal for mamas and papas room since I'm growing outdoors.

There are lots of reasons to get LEDs, and whether it seems like much to you or not, they are more efficient per watt than HID. You could halve the wattage you're using and yield close to the same, or you could keep your same wattage and pack even more light in there, increasing your yield potential greatly while not changing your power consumption.

There are lots of comparison grows and LED discussion threads, check them out... how can you have an opinion on something that you're not really educated about?

Frozenguy's 126w LED vs 250w HID
LED - 1.17gpw
HID - 0.52gpw
(Actual wattage - 118w for LED and 300w~ for 250w HID)

This is one of the best, most fair and unbiased side - by - side grows / reviews I have seen to date on LEDs. Excellent information mad props for always keeping your head above the trolls...
