if she is lucky, it is a .22 or something else low to no recoil & she will learn. if she does NOT learn, i hope nobody says "here, try my 30-06..."

I have been leaving smart-phones out overnight to record the animal sounds.

Near the chickens' feeding area.

There's a whole bunch of bird sounds. Lots of quail talking with each other.

In one part there was a growling sound. It did not sound like a skunk, or a cat. Maybe it was a possum.

Tonight I left out 2 smart-phones. I get more tweety bird sounds on the end of the house where there's a deck out side the bedroom. Overgrown with blackberry.

Not just a few tweety bird sounds. They go on and on and on.

2 phones!? I have 2 questions: 1: only drug dealers have two phones (guess that wasnt a question though) and 2: what kinda phone(s) do you have that the battery lasted all night?

3: (guess there were 3) why?:biggrin::biggrin:

EDIT: BTW, they do have, and surprised you dont have, animal cams

right now I'm juggling 4 functional phone-cameras.

1 zte phone
3 TCL phones

they don't have phone service. They have decent cameras and headphone jacks. $30 each.

Dude, no joke, if you're serious about field recording, which is what you're doing there, I highly urge you to get a Zoom H1 recorder. While smartphones do have excellent little microphones, the difference in quality, and stereo spectrum, will be like night and day. They're inexpensive, and perfect for a hobbyist. I'm a sound engineer, so when I see people doing what I do I just want to encourage it. It's good for the soul to get out there in nature, for one, but you never know if you might end up preserving the sound of a bird that goes extinct or something. I'm serious.

I just love recording, and I'll nerd out over it for hours. :tiphat:

This morning I got a classic recording.

While I was watering the birds sneaked into the house.

They then all started crowing. 1 rooster & 3 hens.

Do you know of a tool that can tell you the frequency of a sound ?

I would like to begin sorting sounds according to frequency.

When I go to the rifle range I usually bring 2 smart-phones to record the sounds.

Yes, most audio editing software has the ability to show you a spectral graph of the frequencies in a given recording. Even the free ones like Audacity.

Thanks, I have Audacity. I'll play with it more.

I had a friend in college that was a cello student. He said he had close to perfect pitch. He would call the dial tone (440 Hz) and then help me tune one of my own projects, a player piano/ music box type thing.

He could listen to most tones and tell you, "oh yes, that's f-sharp one octave above Middle C".

It would be great if I had a similar tool that could take one single squawk in a chicken's post-egg-lay squawking, and tell me what note that one squawk is.

Anyway, just knowing what frequency the different sounds are, is helpful.

/\ The best I could do to pick out a frequency.

If I picked less sound time-line Audacity said it didn't have enough.

I thought 10K is pretty high-pitched. REALLY high-pitched. These are normal squawky chickens.

1K is high pitched. Here's a 1K tone -

Anyway, the bird squawk audio I'm playing with, is mostly below 1KHz, by how it sounds - compared to that 1K tone.

damn tiny little screech owls will scare hell out of you if you haven't heard them before. barred owls make some really wild sounds too when they get to talking to each other. barreds will also call/hunt during daylight hours unlike most owls. 'bama is infested with them...

One sign of living in the country is if one of your neighbors actually cares about the difference between 30-06 and 338-06.

You actually get an increase in efficiency by opening up the neck of the case. 3500 foot pounds, instead of 2900 foot pounds - with the same amount of powder.

= Efficiency. extra Muzzle velocity, flat-shootingness, etc. - just by increasing the radius .015 inches.

https://www.midwayusa.com/product/2...ield-180-grain-core-lokt-soft-point-box-of-20

https://www.midwayusa.com/product/3...a-square-180-grain-accubond-spitzer-box-of-20

You see the same thing comparing the short magnums, 270 WSM vs. 300 WSM. 300 WSM is way more efficient.

So, is the optimum shape for a rifle round, a straight walled cartridge with no neck ?

If you were talking about this at a coffee shop in urban California, most people could not relate. The obsession with energy efficiency - something I might have in common with them - sort of gets lost.

At a coffee shop in rural Oregon, I'd be likely to get one vote for the 30-06. People actually care about it. And they care about foot pounds and muzzle velocity. "You can get 3000 feet per second with a 180 grain 338 ?"
