I would live in a van in a second, for many years I lived in the the bed of my truck with a camper shell over it & traveled all over the United States. Best experience of my life.

ive done that before too.

as mentioned tho...not to do it as a last resort, but more of a choice, and a way to save a grip of money.

when i was living in the van and in the truck it was "self-imposed" hardship....but it was nice in alot of ways.

i only did it for a few months at a time, my buddy has been doing it for years.

the old school busses do make nice rv's if you convert them, but 1 thing i bet alot of peps dont know is that most campgrounds and rv parks dont allow converted buses. (the high-class RVers dont like them is mainly why)

Man,I would have loved to have any one of those vans!!There aint a bit a hardship or trouble living in them castles!!Fuckin A
Back in 1979 I found myself outdoors with no where to go,luckily I had a 74 chevy van.My first van, moss gold and buckskin,2 colors ya never even see anymore but back then I was cool!!
I put a small woodstove in the back and had an easy chair I slept in,I would get off from the bakery at midnite, pull behind the factory and start a fire......it would get toasty as hell and I would end up sleepin naked in the chair only to wake up at 4am freezin my ass off!!!had to live like that for about 5 months till I could get an apartment, that was the Christmas I was eating cold raviolo out of the can!!!NEVER AGAIN!!!!

Fuck,do ANY of you guy's REALLY now what it's like to ruff it?Ya'll sound like dreamin kids.....livin outdoors isnt near as glamorous as it seems.

I remember washin in the stream it was so fucking cold ya got an instant headache!!

some traveller guys got nicked round our way recently growing in a truck-

i used to live in trucks, trailers, coaches, military vehicles. Anybody remember The Brew Crew? What a pain in the ass those guys were.
I gave up living in vehicles in the mid 90s -there was no one particular reason-and if i were going to do it again it would probably mean being stuck out in the middle of nowhere which i don't want. I can see the attraction tho and in the past few years have seen 3 or 4 of my middle aged male friends sell their houses, for mindboggling amounts, buy trucks and zoom off to a rural idyll.

One iconic, and amusing, incident for me was seeing a MASSIVE 8 wheeled amphibious trooper carrier, with 'FUCK YOU PIGS' sprayed across the front in dayglow pink, being stopped by two bewhildered rural coppers in a tiny two door Ford Fiesta panda car. One of the coppers went over-kicked one of the 7ft high tyres and said to the traveller guys, "Have you got a currant MOT certificate for this vehicle?" The guy replied, "We don't need a fucking MOT." And the copper just say "Oh right". Got back into the panda and drove off.

eddie

edit-well impressed by the vehicles in the thread

While I know I am "just a kid" to many of you, my elders. But unlike many of these "Towners" as I call em', I have ALWAYS been an outdoors man. I was a Cub Scout, a graduated Boy scout, a conservation director for my local watershed and ecosystem... I have been fishing since I could stand.
It honestly is one of my life goals... To survive on the land with minimal supplies(rice/other essentials) I want to do it using as much of nature has to offer(burning wood, not gas. Using wind/water to create electricity)
Last year, dating back to one of the worst snow flurries we had in a few years. I had just happened to move into a single wide trailer a mere month before with a newly acquired "friend"... It was ok, but it had shitty insulation, unsealed windows, and it sat 2 feet off the ground on cinder blocks. Oh, and there was no wall in the back, it was a tarp... It would get cold. Real cold... Our glasses would stick to our lips if they where moist. We left water on to prevent freezing but to no avail, we had not water as ALL water lines AND faucets froze and cracked them. We burned out 3 heaters total as we had to keep them on and on as high as possible at all times.
Trust me, I know what the outdoors has to offer, and I am all for it. I am sick of seeing the city... I am ready to pack up ship, buy a VW vanogan pop tenter, puts a few mods in her, and take off...
The only thing that prevents me, or postpones me I should say, is that since I don't have a defined career path, I don't know whether to stay because the opportunity may represent itself, or to leave and create the opportunity for myself... at the same time, I don't know exactly what I would do... where all that I would go. Where I couldn't go. I have never been schooled in any of the before mentioned sort. Actually I have never really talked about it to anyone past this point... Everytime I mentioned it to people they asked "You mean like camping?" or they wanted to know if I was also starting a cult...
Nobody can take your heart seriously when they can't see where your heart belongs...

I AGREE 1OO%

a van would be heaven compared to that 8x1O cell i shared w/another for over 3 yrs...lol

i lived in a toyota station for a few months n 80s while in LA...i got a bunch of parking tix. and bums peed on my door step, but it was better than that cell.
