Gramps said : "Ya gotta kiss em to keep em". and "Never met a beer I didnt like". He's now over 90 and a WW2 US Navy Submariner (Pacific) He still kisses his (new) wife and drinks beer every day.
grandpa out lived 4 wives he was 80 when he married #5 she was 35 said he wouldnt out live her the sayin i remember the most he was asked by one of his kids how will u satisfy her his saying was the older the buck the stiffer the horn
My grandfather told me the goal in life was to outlive everyone you know.
That is, in fact, the passive goal as no one wants to die. However, my grandfather checked the obits every day and when he saw someone he knew in there, he'd say, "outlived that sumbitch!"
Mine was the last of the hard core.. serious hardcore soviets, his favorite was
"Shoot him in the head" .."You gotta shoot him in the head, it never fails"
I thought at the time he was talking about Germans even the forthcoming tryst with the Yankees, later I was to learn in my own battles it was very sound advice.
2 years later, at 15yo, I was hunting wolves, shot one, went to skin him, when he jumped up, and had me by the throat, my dad shot him in the head at 1 meter, or 3 feet, I shit myself, almost and was deaf for a week, and now the only prisoners I accept are dead ones
I was pretty young when my grandpa died. Both my maternal grandma and paternal grandma were intolerant, and I didn't like them.
Maternal grandma would frequently say, "If wishes were horses, beggars would ride." I only use that when I am disgustedly jaded, and someone is being totally unreasonable about what they want. And even then, I bet I haven't used that line more than three times in 40 years, and I was probably mocking someone in two of those.
Vague recollection of my maternal grandpa saying, "Hey!! Get out of that! I didn't say you could get in there!!" The generic value of which was delayed in life a few years; it's always good to know what's yours, what's not, and the difference.
when i was 12 i use to drop in on my grandad and con a bottle of beer off him but i had to sit with him and listen to his storys , fair trade , and one time he said to me " boy ..5 years ago it took two hands to bend my erection , now i can do it with one hand .. i think i'm getting stronger " .. funny bugga .
"Never use your own money"
As my paternal gramps was a hard worker from age 14 and quite generous, I assume he meant in business ventures or risky investments.
He did all right for himself so I guess it was advice he practiced.
If you can be the idea man or the facilitator there are always people who will put up the dough.
Just don't cheat them, otherwise characters like Vos will get you.
