Wood or Metal Cabinet ?

Member
This will be my first time and I'm very lucky I have a choice on what to use metal or wood. Both cabinets are same size 22"deep 28"wide 59"high.
The wood cab has a cardboard back that would have to be changed to plywood.
I also want to build a small cabinet inside at the bottom for clones and a mother or two.
One Questions?
With a Flowering area of say 22"x28"x39"high What would be the best HPS wattage light to use?
Thanks for the help in advance.
I Hope!

i would go with the wood as its easier to modify and work with than metal (at least for most) for your space i would go with a 400w HID, some will say this is overkill but if you can cool the space (air cool the lights) and you will get a lot of light for those buds to grow nice a dense.

250w would be ideal provided you have enough circulation to handle the heat.

400w for a 2x2 space is overkill and your gonna have constant temp probs.

250w/4ft= 62.5w per sqft

50-75w is considered standard wattage per sq foot.

You didn't say if your 39 inches of height is before or after you added the hood. If you go larger than 150 watts there's going to be heat which causes stretching. HPS also causes stretching compared to MH . You may want to consider CMH for more compact growth.

i have +/- the same space, but divided in 3 like this
______________
|*****|******|
|**1**|******|
|--------|***3**|
|*****|******|
|**2**|******|
|*****|******|
-------------------

i'm using CFL's and it's like this:

1: 100w (clone/mom)
2: 190w (veg)
3: 200w (flo)
i'll probably increase the 3rd later on

so it's a total of almost 500w for +/- the same sqft you have.
mine is 1.64wx1.64dx3.3h total, but dividing the 3 spaces i have three 1.64x1.64 areas to light. temps are cool, but it's cold outside..let's see when summer returns..
i have 3 sunnon 125mm extractors (1 each division), and 6 pcfans 80mm on the intake (2 each).

i know a sodium will heat up much more, but i think you can do it with a 400w,.you can always get the 400 then sell it and get a 250 if it's too much.. if you get the 250 you will always be thinking what if i got the 400?? besides.. i'm using a 200 cfl in half your space, and it doesn't get hot.. so an aircooled 400 probably will be the same, as long as you vent your space

regarding wood or metal.. some people just get metal shelves (the ones you just have to bolt together) and make a cheap and easy to build "cabinet".. but i don't like it.. i prefer wood as it's more professional looking plus, as someone said, it's easier to work..
but i guess its personal preference..

Anybody suggesting a 400 in a small 2x2 cabinet clearly has not had experience with a 400. I'm feeding 20F air from the outside, and 350W of mh and hps light and I still have some heat stress issues.

Definitely go with wood. Its sturdier and easier to work with. Now on the subject of the wattage I have a cab almost identica to yours and I run a 400 no prob. Any amount of heat can be controlled withthe right ventilation. I have a 10 inch fan blowing in and I mounted a fitted piece of glass at the top of my box about an inch below the light. Above the lamp are 2 65cfm duct fans installed in the ceiling. In the dead of summer I the Midwest humidity is a huge prob here. The cab never goes over 80.
