Bearded it is ground zero for the recession, we were in a small local recession before the nation, thanks GM!

Governor Granholm Says Michigan's Green Economy Continues to Grow, Add Jobs December 11, 2009
"The Volt symbolizes the new GM and the new Michigan," Granholm said. "Eight GM facilities in Michigan are involved in Volt production. GM has invested $700 million in those facilities, including its new Brownstown Township battery pack plant. Brownstown is one of several advanced battery manufacturing facilities that we worked hard to attract to Michigan, and it's estimated that battery production will create up to 40,000 jobs in the next 10 years."

Should we compare Detroit with the Tijuana, San Diego area ?

Here is a useful tool you might use.

Zillow Detroit. Then zoom in on the houses...Most people park their cars up against their backdoors You can pick up the whole block for about 100k. A lot of houses are listed starting at free and 5k. Some of them even have roofs.

Yeah Owl, I zoomed the border the other day. Quite a contrast...don't really need to lable the border U.S./Mexico, you can pretty much figure it out for yourself which side you are on.

Thing is, most locations can have a shit hole in their midst.
I live way up north, hunderds of miles from Detroit, although I was born in Detroit and was a Taxi Driver downriver for almost two years.

All this tit4tat bickering gets us nowhere.
Michigan is a wonderful State to live in and, while our economy was previously based around the auto industry, we have been diversifying with leaps and bounds.

Within the next week, my small town (pop. 3000) will find out if we will begin construction on a new power plant based around renewable energy. This will bring approximately 400 full time jobs plus all the jobs that come with construction.

Our Governor has done a fantastic job, unfortunately she is being stymied by "the Party of NO (R)"

Owl,
Not ragging on Michigan dude. Of course there are good things about it, just not not the economy. If you think there are alot of jobs, you are on crack. Granholm is a dumb skank. Detroit is not as hardcore as some people think, but the facts are it is has been corrupt for so many years, it has ruined the city. Up north is a different country compared to it. Maybe you are not hit as hard as others, but unemployment is the highest in the country.

They are cutting all the schools budgets. Detroit had the worst scores in the nation for testing, and they have to close tons of schools. Housing market is a fing joke. If you have a house in MI, your stuck. unless you forclose or lose your ass. Atleast there is the Great Lakes, but the lower lakes and rivers have the highest amounts of PCB in the state EVER. Lake St. Clair is so polluted it is not even funny.

Stay up north Owl! Most people could not move, even if they wanted to.

You chaps are on the wrong end of the state, up north, it is the most beautiful place in the midwest. Lake Superior is marvelous, but it is bloody cold up there most of the year. The UP along the lake is the ticket, but it is farther from Il.

Word. I've been to at least 16 states and Michigan and Pennsylvania are the most beautiful I've seen yet. The impression people have about Michi is Detroit and the economy.....well, we used to be one of the big 3, we have done a lot for the US guys. We only have what...5 major cities here? So, get the cities out of your head...because Michigan is mostly farm country (your welcome for all the food and water folks, our broke asses still pay an awful lot of taxes to keep that shit in tact)...it's fuckin' beautiful here. I moved out of one of our biggest cities and live in a protected wildlife area now....gorgeous!!

Go to Grand Rapids....the bars are amazing, there's jobs and a lot of hot bitches, srsly.

Oh yeah...and we grow some amazing and legal dope here. Michigan also has the best metal scene in the country...hands down.

the people in the midwest are some of the realest people on the planet.

You can move in tomorrow and most everyone would treat you like they are good friends who have known you forever.

Grand Rapids is wonderful, and otherwise, Kalamazoo and Ann Arbor are good towns as well. The common thing between these cities is they do not rely on the auto industry. the entire country is experiencing problems due to the downturn, and shipping jobs overseas. Michigan just happened to be a mostly manufacturing state.

That being said, stay away from Flint and Detroit.

Also, in the summer, Michigan is one of the finest places on earth to be.

Ann Arbor is pretty much the only liberal city in Michigan, thus the best place for tokers.
Every year, the hash bash is held there on 4/20. Its only a $25 fine for possession.
It has a similar vibe to Berkely, Austin, or Boulder - except with worse weather.

Grand Blanc is OK in that its the best part of Flint but its still Flint and Flint is nowhere you wanna be.

I'm really surprised to see my fellow Michiganders ripping on our wonderful State.
Really sad that they always bring up Detroit as an open sore.

Governor Granholm Says Michigan's Green Economy Continues to Grow, Add Jobs December 11, 2009

The State of Michigan consists of 97,990 sq mi while, Detroit comprises only 143.0 sq mi.
Should we consider California a shitty place to move to simply because of the high crime rate around the Tijuana, San Diego border ?

no but when you consider the D with flint, saginaw, lansing, and every other nasty ass city you start to see a picture...

BUT as soon as you go outside the city it can be beautiful... there just is not any jobs and recovery is far away....
