When renting, does it seem suspicious to ask to change the locks?

She's young, single, unattractive, obese, very shy and insecure, and seems not extremely bright. If there ever was a landlady that it could be accomplished with, it would be this one.

But I hear ya, loud and clear.

ah man... your gonna end up tappin' that ain't ya.

yeah it will be good prob till like june/early july if I run the lights at night then for summer I'd just do an outdoor grow. Looking into auto flower strains for spring and then I'll do a nice run for fall harvest. Then if fall It'll be back to the attic.

have you even been in the attic yet? what is the power, water and insulation situation? does the land lady store her beloved beenie-baby collection up there? helped out on the build for an attic grow and IMHO it was a major pain in the ass. that small access hole that keeps people out turns into a headache fast. how big are you trying to go with this? do you have your own stairs to the apartment and if not how are you gonna walk all that shit past the land lady? she may be a little slow but not that stupid. for all you really know she could have a crop in the basement. i say again BALLSY!!!!

Hell no its not suspicious to change the locks... If I was you, I would change them and just hold onto the old locks, and give them back when you move out....Tell them you have a baby and dont want the last 50 tenents to have a key to your house... Surely he will understand, and if not, Kick him in the nuts and tell him to snap out of it...And call him a HillBilly too...Just to help drive home your point.

I have no idea what is in the attic haven't been up there. Worst case I could run a cord if there's no outlet. I don't care really about the work getting up there. It'll prob be less work than climbing the tree I'll be growing in outdoors this year.

The landlady said she has never been up there in her entire life and she's lived in that house all her life. I doubt she'll be going up there.

I'm just gonna run a 600 bare bulb vert in coco, so not a lot of stuff to be seen carrying up. But I do have my own stairs. I should know later on today if I'm taking this place or the one in the complex.

climbing up in an attic every day, one that doesn't at least have drop down stairs, you will HATE it by the end.

unless you can automate nearly every part (think A/C reservoir with pumps and blumats?), its a huge PITA.

haha maybe. I'm into working out and shit though so I think I'd actually kinda like it.

I'm thinking of just doing the attic thing running lights at night for 1 harvest before it gets too warm, then going outdoors for the summer. I don't think there is a possibility of running an A/C up there esp if I want it stealth. Blumats are something I've been very interested in but have not tried yet. It sounds like it would be ideal. Good suggestion.

make sure you have some sort of overflow protection, last thing you'd want is a bunch of nutes leaking out into your insulation/attic and dripping down into your place.

my attic is freezing at night, hot as hell in the day. I can't stand 30 minutes up there without feeling uncomfortable, hence my A/C comment. I'd want it to be a level line for the temps and no drastic spikes, this all depends on where you live and your environment too though.

I was doing HVAC work in an attic recently and thought, man you could put a ballin 2kw up here! It would be a room within a room type build though, with A/C controls and I'd personally actually build in a reservoir up there, mix my nutes in a 20 gallon trashcan and pump them up into the reservoir, then let the blumats take over from there. If you have environment on lock and lights on a timer, you could theoretically just pump water up into the attic when its low and check on em every few days instead of hand watering every day.

I've built a grow space in an attic before and serviced it through a 24"x24" hole in the ceiling just like you describe. My space was a little different because it was over the garage. Building a grow room in the attic is a lot of work, but it is super stealthy for sure, if your willing to do the work. Insulating it is the major pain in the a$$ along with building it and then figuring out the ventilation. To me, its not worth the effort. Just get a tent in the room with the locked door and put an a/c in the window and be done with it. Carrying water up through a hole in the ceiling is a major pita.

About the locks, just change the one on the door to the grow room/access room. That's really all you need as long as you have smell under control. If you want to change the locks on the exterior doors, I'd tell her about it and give her a key, a key that you think is a master key, or at least thats what you requested at the locksmith store. But you know it only unlocks the handle lock and won't work for the deadbolts. See, there was a misunderstanding, the locksmith thought you just wanted the front and back doorknobs mastered. This way it can easily be written off as a common mistake and not as if your deliberately trying to keep her out.

So I got fucked today. Twice. The girl who was supposed to show me the 1 bedroom in the apartment complex stood me up, so I emailed the downstairs landlady and she already rented to someone else.

So, looks like it's back to the drawing board.

I didn't say shit about that.. Just went and Changed all locks.....he is gonna ask you for the key if you tell him.... he did find my locks on the Front Gate of the property.. and just asked me to put it with the other lock so he can open it too.. lol never do that of coarse.. always put my lock just to be sure.
Best of luck in your find bud!

OK. my comment on the locks-

You change them, but don't tell anyone you changed them. If they find out it just saved your ass. You leave a copy in an envelope by the door with the landlords name on it, OR Sam The Caveman's ideas good as well. But either way, you change it & don't tell them.

NOW, you sure you can afford this right? If you have no job, do you REALLY have enough saved up to pay rent, utilities, AND the grow? It costs alot in the beginning with zero return, add another 2 months if you don't have clones. 600 watt's isn't going to be much, so I'm assuming it's just for personal and you have other ways to make money right?

With that said- Bad credit? No job? Are you good with photoshop?

I was looking recently, and a few realtors/ll's wanted to run my credit. I said HELL NO- I'll supply my own report thank you. 75% of them have no problem with this- if they object explain to them that credit inquiries hurt your score & you will not let them run the report but will gladly supply your own (Which doesn't hurt your score). I supplied my real report, but if yours is bad then you can photoshop it. Either way, it doesn't matter as much as you think - 1st, last, & security is the main thing.

I got my out-of-state landlord to let me do 1st, second, and security :) Remember, there are SOOOOO many places out there, they might seem critical at first- IT'S JUST A SALES TECHNIQUE, they are salesman! Once you show 1st last & security & a pen they will get on there knees & blow you to sign ;) Keep looking, you will find the perfect space. 600 needs a 3x3, that's a friggin' closet man, not an attic. Move on from that place. my .02c

I changed my lock without telling the managers, the key kept getting stuck... I was out of town when maintenance came to change the a/c filters, they just left a note asking to change it back...

I don't have other ways to make money but I will get a part time job to supplement until things get going. It's gonna be a bit tight at first, but I'm going to do 2 harvests outdoors this year so the first finish in july, so I need to get by till then.

That's an idea I never thought of. :D

Yeah I want to move into the city and most apartments up for rent have companies that lease them, so credit, income verification, background check are all pretty standard. I may need to just go outside of the city and find a private landlord. Sucks but for now may be the best option.

Great advice thanks I'll look into that photoshop.

Wondering what you think. I don't have a ton of experience renting, so is it a normal thing to ask for? This is a private landlord and I certainly want to be the only one with access to my apartment, but hesitant to come across in a suspicious way. How should I approach the subject?
Get addendum to lease saying you can, when, who pays, what happens when you vacate ETCETCETC...ONLY way to do this...

THANKS

i always change the lock when i get a new place

just do it, dont tell the landlord.. that way if they say anything then you know they tried to get into your spot when you were gone.

never heard of anyone getting evicted for changing their locks... usually the landlord wont even know until you move out

most landlords will not let you change the locks...if you change the locks they need a key, its usually in the lease that they need a key for bullshit like "fire escape" or some bullshit.

also, i would not advise trying to grow in an attic or an apartment...man up and get at least a small family home with two bedrooms...
