When renting, does it seem suspicious to ask to change the locks?

But if I had absolutely nothing in the apartment that would indicate anything, had a stealth security camera running, and had everything up in the attic, I'm thinking I'd know about her snooping before she'd think to look in, or be able to access, the attic.

I keep thinking about a possible stealth way to lock the attic entrance. Then I'd know for sure if she was snooping before she actually found anything.

Greenmatter and Sci-fi- Great advice. Yeah I guess there is no reason for the landlord to know the locks have been changed. And it's a great test for the landlord.

David762- Yeah the surveillance system was another thought I had. Wonder what something like that costs.

It's probably a bad idea to rent there anyway but that attic situation is actually just what I was looking for.

I've seen pin-hole cameras with SD card storage and a motion sensor, disguised as a clock radio or a book for your bookshelf (covert nanny cam?) for well under $100.
Or you could look on-line for a bulkier "big game camera" if you wanted something more obvious -- for about twice that amount. Those are normally chained or bolted to a tree in the woods ...

Only I can appreciate how extremely disturbing that image actually is, but you all have your imaginations. It ain't fodder for a good night's rest I promise you that. How am I gonna sleep with her living underneath me now? Puts my childhood nightmares to shame. :hide:

don't ask man just do it. if they ever figure it out either stand there and say "these are the keys you gave me" or "oh fuck, forgot to tell you" if they are asking you about it really soon and there was no reason for them to try to get in anyway, you just learned something about your landlord the easy way..

Dont ask...

Not going to read all previous posts so if this has been covered please disregard.
I have been renting a few properties over the last 10 years. I always change the locks and I dont give a copy to the landlord and I dont tell them I changed it.
I look for a similar style to the lock that was there previously.
People will say oh thats suspicious, blah blah, I say bullshit, people are protective of their personal items regardless of what their doing, legit people, dirty people, the whole rainbow!
If your landlord is coming over, he has to give you notice, at least my state does.
So no problem there, if your home for his arrival.
Now what about an emergency situation?...
Well he tries to get in and cant.
He calls you and your come and open the door, then explain that you changed the locks due to a "panty sniffer" at your old residence, or suspicious activity at night and you forgot to mention it. Apologize, give him a copy and move out. lol.
I know people will say bad Idea, but if im growing and renting, the landlord is not getting a fucking copy of my key.Period.
And in my ten years, I never ran into a problem(not growing for ten years but I have changed my locks for ten years). .But thats just it, You know your situation better than anyone. Can you pull this off?
Best of luck my friend.
Midgethorse.

_edit, just realized the landlord lives downstairs from you. Rethink doing this man, be patient get a better place.

The law states that the owner or manager must have a copy of the key in case of fire or floods,in some states written permission must be obtained. It is also a provision of every rental lease that I have ever seen.
Back to the OP's question, yes it would seem suspicious to ASK about changing locks.Would you ask an employer if they drug test. Would you ask a store owner if they prosecute for shoplifting.Would you ask your girl if she would split if you tried to get into her sisters pants.
Do what you have to do and just make it your little secret, okay.

I'm still looking for my very first ... evidently no one will rent a house to someone without them already having a job.

Which is just a bit disturbing ... people can have a job for decades, and then all of a sudden it's gone. Happens all the time these days. But if you have a pile of cash in the bank, good credit, etcetera, they wind up treating you like a leper.

Of course, the owner/manager of the property will not tell you that the property in question might be on the verge of foreclosure. As if, these days, they would even have that info from the mortgage-holder, And even assuming that the actual mortgage-holder is the party actually doing the foreclosure. There's a lot of That going around these days, as well ... :moon:

I'm checking out another place tomorrow afternoon. It's a 1 bedroom in an apartment complex. Not ideal but at least I won't have to deal with the possibility of a snooper and I can just change the locks without anyone noticing. The thing I don't like about it is that if I grow in my one and only bedroom, it's gonna be more difficult to have people over, especially women. The greatest thing about the landlady apartment is that attic. Nice and discreet, and prob no one will even notice it, let alone ask to go up.

The problem I say again is bad credit and no job. Very difficult to get an apartment. If things don't work out at this complex tomorrow, I'm gonna sign with the landlady for a short 6 month lease and find a way to lock the attic.

Well the attic doesn't have a door it's an old style house with just a square hole in the ceiling and a wooden cover. As far as I know there's no ladder or anything to even get up there which is a plus for stealth. It would still be nice to lock somehow without changing the appearance.

yeah it will be good prob till like june/early july if I run the lights at night then for summer I'd just do an outdoor grow. Looking into auto flower strains for spring and then I'll do a nice run for fall harvest. Then if fall It'll be back to the attic.
