When Is a Strain "Yours"?

@SandyFantasyman- Im not sure if “morality” or “ethics” are the right words, but the “turf wars” and “deaths” were for sure two of the MANY reasons why most of us involved in the black market, before the internet to be specific, behaved very differently than what is commonly seen today. Hell, most wanted to avoid getting socked in their fkn mouth, nevermind war and death!

But there WAS definitely a code.

Sticking to this “code” was no guarantee that all would work out, but choosing not to exponentially increased your odds of having to deal with the negative consequences of that choice.

This is slightly off topic as the OP is specifically speaking about seeds and breeding, and the vast majority of interactions between breeders, the trading of genetics, discussions about genetic lineages and the sales of seeds all happen online, and sadly, the “code” really only worked in the Real World, where we heard and saw things because mthrfkrs were within arms reach. Because their location was known. Because people could be gotten to.

Today.... crooks, cons and cowards suffer no consequences.

It’s the reason why “community”, is these days, just a word. Mainly used by shysters or those who are too young to remember when.

It feels slightly odd to say that it was the threat of war or murder that forced us to be more considerate or polite, but they are as much a part of us as peace and love are.

It’s the money you mentioned that made sure it wasnt gonna be the latter, which is all the internet left us with.

For the most part anyway.

I miss when this was the standered. Honestly I am confused by currant ethics . :tiphat:

I cant stud out my Golden Retriever per the conditions of the breeder without getting permission first, and paying an additional fee.

I wonder if everyone that started their seed company right after nev and Sam dropped their gear asked for permission....

Unless there is some legal binding paperwork involved not a single fucking person can stop you.

Yes there is paperwork involved,it is agreed upon, and binding.
Many reputable dog breeders of Champion AKC pedigree bloodlines take their work very seriously. As a matter of fact,my dogs breeder has first rights legally should I ever want to get rid of or sell my guy. Which he's part of the family so that would never ever happen.

Question for you all,

What would be the proper 'name' for some plant that just showed up.
genetics unknown , a volunteer if you will

I don't want to own it or make money with it, it came to me freely and freely it goes to another grower friend.
He wants to know what to call it. I said volly for now until some of the people in the know can say what they have done in similar situations

Unknown genetic on both sides, whats in a name?

Rico, I have a similar situation that began about 15 years ago. A friend who's brother was incarcerated for growing cannabis is Germany gave me about 40 of his seeds. She wasn't able to tell me the name, and just called them 'strong seeds' (starke samen). I grew them out and found an almost 'stable' strain that had obviously been inbred a few times. If I had to guess, I'd say it was around F4 when I got them.

To this day, I still don't know the real name, but I call it SS. I've used it in a few crosses, and when I make out a pedigree it just says SS, and in brackets I put 'unknown strain from Germany'.

I think the best we can do is preserve whatever name and lore we got with the genetic material. That way, it would be possible for someone in the future to pin it down, even if we failed.

In your case, since you have basically nothing to go on, the 'nothing' is the story. If in the future, you decide to breed her, just tell it like it is. It's FAR better than just making up some BS! Remember, truth is the real currency of the breeder.

LOL at having the 'SS' strain from Germany.

Hehe, I'm glad someone got that one weedobix! Funny story. When I first started messing with SS I also had a Super Skunk plant on hand. Naturally, there was a labeling problem. I solved it with the not exactly PC solution of labeling the German strain with lightning bolt S's to distinguish it from the Super Skunk. Breeders are always in danger of being called a nazi... "We must keep the lines pure!" (read in Terminator accent).

I agree. I don’t understand either. I would have never got involved if it was like it is today. I wouldn’t have wanted anything to do with it.

Could have been a lawyer or a politician and skipped all the risk if being a fkn asshole was the goal!lol

ethics and morality aside can one claim rights to an individual that is unique?
through meiotic sporulation each and every plant/cultivar is an individual unique from all others.
most organisms are eukaryotes including cannabis.
in that regard one could only "own" one (as in singular) plant...of course this is only my observation from reading science ...

Given how sport phenos get created one might even begin to wonder if each branch on a plant might be subtly unique from the others.

a sport is when two different characteristics express themselves in different areas on the plant or different characteristics express themselves on two different cuttings over time both taken from the same plant, a good example is how a plant with variegation can only be variegated on one branch and the other branch could be completely green, this is not limited to looks alone i am sure. It is one of the most beautiful things about plants to me, almost like every cell in the plant has the possibility to be unique from eachother but they all work together to sustain life like a living colony :)

It's generally not possible to make an exact "cop"y and I assumed readers would understand I mean making and selling F2's of XYZ strain is not cool.

If I were a professional breeder I wouldn't give a shit if people made F2s from my seed because F2s are full of recessive traits and will be nothing like the original hybrid cross.

That's exactly why professional AND knowledge breeders actively don't give a dropping, as you put it, and encourage punters to play with their creations..... Knowing full well what you said!
