my res was cool b/c my setup is in the basement and it was cool over winter. For a while i has a water heater in my res so it wouldnt be too cold( like 55) and sometimes it would go above 70 and then i would turn it off to drop temp. Could that have done it?

Greetings chinese-mecican.

Bad news: that root zone is colonized by fungi.
Good news: the colony is not primarily pythium (root rot), more likely a species of yeast.

I will state this plainly so as not to encourage debate: it is not a good idea to use a carbohydrate product when "active" hydroponics is the method of cultivation. It does nothing positive for the system, and in some cases may prove detrimental.

Some of the remedies (Hydrogen Peroxide) put forward by the other members to combat pythium, will also be effective against yeast.

Hydroguard will not be as effective, because it efficacy is dependent on its pre-colonization of the root mass (out competing pathogens). Yeast, when fed (carbohydrates/sugar) will out compete most other mico-organisms. Before using Hydroguard, apply Hydrogen Peroxide (3% solution: 20ml/L).

Another product that is useful in this situation is Nutrilife's SM-90 (label instructions will suffice).

Sincerely,
Charles.

Definitely. Even if my aquarium changes temps like that all kinds of shit grows and my fish get diseased. The thing is, once it grows, it's much harder to get rid of than prevent. I'd go for the H2o2 (Hydrogen Peroxide) then maintain it once the shit is dead. Clean it out well after this batch, man, knock it's socks off with h202 (always following labels to not burn the roots), then prevent later with hydroguard ongoing, don't put the heater in the res any more either...

Clean it good, scrub it down, and start over, you may want to look into a good professional thermostat for the rez to keep temps even, also how often do you circulate the water? The left over water in the buckets could get stagnant and warm up too..

i think the roots got a little darker. But i put the hydrogen peroxide in the res last night. Am i in troble? Also how often should i change the water in the res w/ the hydrogen peroxide in it. How much should i put in everytime. And how long do u think until its gone. I need this harvest!

I doubt you will revert anything in this grow. It will just keep the fungi in check. You may see them get a little lighter, but fully white and healthy may require a full cleaning like I had mentioned. Remember not to overdo it with H202, it's concentrated usually and can be harmfull if overdone. I used it once a day @ about a tsp every 10 gallons or so, but it depends on the concentration. Remember, if you run any organic nutes, it will kill all the living organisma, make sure the nutes are compatible with H202, like flora nova or something peace..

you could run flora shield in your nutes from start to finish instead of hydroguard.
