Whats the best way to get seeds started?

How soon do you guys add nutes to seedlings? Do you wait till they are above water only soaked planting medium or do you plant them in weak solution soaked medium? I'm using coco.

I've seen deficiency's at around ten to fouteen days in coco with just EWC,and perlite.

So should I be presoaking my medium with nutes before planting or wait till they are above the surface. I would be using heads formula at 1/1.5. I started a few (6) seeds using nutes and all cracked but only 3 came to the surface. Wondering if its better to start then with no nutes and then once they come to the surface give them light nutes. I want to improve my 50% survival rate LOL.

Mandala's website gives rather specific germination advice. He's probably germinated a few seeds and has some experience. Worthy read.

We do it like superman. Good luck. bg

I had 11 seeds I wanted to pop (attitude) so I folded a paper towel and wet it with RO water. i spread them out and folded another paper towel on top (darkness and moisture to the top). wet that. I put the paper towels directly on the cable box (I want the wet towel to garner heat from the cable box, which is always on and always warm). two days and VOILA all eleven taproots came out. before the fine taproot hairs got too entangled in the paper towel fibers, I took my tweezers which were santized in simple Hydrogen peroxide and placed each into a rockwool 1" cube that has been presoaked in RO and Hormex. bam. into the hydrodome they go under a distant 1000w MH. woop!:thank you:

I soak first, then into the soil-like mix. But if and when I start doing it like Superman, keep em wet is really the only key.
Paper towels are a bitch, because of dainty little legs, especially when you forget for a few days, it happens.

You can literally put the seeds into the plastic bag sans the paper towel and mist it, they will pop. its been done for shitz n giglz b4

soak your riots in water, straight from the tap,pop your seeds in tap root down if you can identify this, lay horizontal if unsure (it will sort itself out),pop at the bottom of the veg cab(you got good temps in here ain't you?)...keep them moist without any air blowing directly at them and in 2-3 days you should have a taproot popping out the bottom of the riot.........if you have'nt throw it the fuck away you got plenty more have'nt you?........er thats it! :woohoo:

The ones that don't pop, get thrown out in the veggie garden. This year 3 fat betties popped up from throw-aways, nice pink pistils.

sweetestsin420,

Some things you can do

1) Not use the paper towel method
2) Use better seeds
3) Buy a jug of distilled water and use this. It has 0 ppm.
4) Drop new seeds in a few inches of distilled water. They should float to the top. Make sure no air bubbles are attached to any of the seeds. After 12 hours poke the seeds with your (clean) finger and look for seeds that sink. This means the outer hull (or whatever it's called) has cracked, meaning that the seed has entered the sprouting stage. For seeds that did not sink, check again every 12 hours. All seeds should sink within 36 hours. Place seeds in soil or coco or whatever (I use Jiffy pucks aka peat pucks). Just be careful to make sure that if you are using soil that the soil has been adequately 'cooked' for 3 weeks or so. If you are unsure about your soil, just use plain coco. Just gently drop the seeds on top or create a small hole using a toothpick, only about 1/8 inch deep. Gently place a little medium overtop of the seed, ensuring that you don't compact the material so much that the seed will have to struggle through. Then sprinkle a little perlite overtop to block light from drying the surface where the seed will sprout from. Place in humidity dome with temps between 72-83 (rough estimate). Do not overwater medium. Continue to use distilled water until seeds are well established. Sprouting may take less than 24 hours after this, or it may take up to one week. It all depends on the age of the seeds and most of all the genetic make up of that particular strain.

That's it.

Hope this helps.

The h202 will kill any bacteria in the water which can trigger mold etc. This is an alternative to using distilled water. If you don't have any h202, the distilled water will give you the same results for less than $2. Plus you can drink it afterwards. I wouldn't try that with the h202 though.

If you got some extra seeds around try this...

Soak them for 12-24hrs w/dechlorinated water then use that to drench the paper towels.
THEN place in between your hands and gently press together & open like a book, squeezing out that excess water 1 or 2x.
Use a ziploc unsealed & put the towel in it, placed on a plate & cover w/dark cloth.
These just sit in a little cabinet in the bathroom(warm enough). Sometimes not all pop, but I'll even throw those down & they surprise me 4-5days later after I already forgot about them. Don't underestimate the seed.
Even if they don't all pop tail, still put them all down & treat the same. Trust me!

OK. Germinating seed is not a science. Basically a seed will sprout and live with any method as long there is not too much moisture or a low level of moisture. No offense to anyone here but....you do not need peroxide, nor distilled water, no voodoo involved whatsoever. I will bet you if you opened a can of cat food and placed a seed in it....it WILL sprout. BUT, don't leave it there because it will drown in the moisture.Hell....spit on a piece of toilet paper....place a seed in the spit then put it near a heat vent ....it WILL sprout. I am a paper towel guy myself. I place seeds in moist paper towels on a styrofoam plate and put plate in a plastic grocery bag and then place in warm area.I then keep an eye on them about every 8 hours. I do this all the time and the results are just fine.:)

Doesn't anybody just put seeds in rockwool cubes and place in a dome on top of a warming pad. I've barely lost any seeds this way.

Bingo! i do the same, works great. soak the cubes for 24 hrs. rinse well, add beans, pop the rockwool cubes in a prop tray with a dome. just threw some beans exactly as described 3 days ago, all but 3 have already sprouted. keep the tray warm with a heating pad or similar and the vents on the dome closed to keep humidity up. once they alll sprout, i open vents a little each day till the dome comes off. then off to 4" rw cubes and the flood table.
