Based on your amperage / voltage draw + outage length coverage. These things are typically made to protect power outages and surges for computers. Naturally they come in sizes to protect a small home PC for a few minutes, to humongous servers the size of your fridge or larger for hours or days. You could spend from $30 to $3 million and up.

sp say u get a unit that can support 1000 watts and how many ever amps ect. and it will last for 12 min. what happens when that time is up. does it safely turn off your digital ballast so it wont get damaged or did u just buy a 200 dollar unit to give u 12 min. i dont know about you guys but i may not be able to respond in 12 min especially if im at work or something.

Why would a device, designed specifically for protection against power outages and electrical surges, intentionally send out harmful currents?

Of course it will turn it off "safely" as if you had removed power from the ballast by unplugging it.

I couldn't tell you because this will be the first time running the Hortilux bulbs. I could never justify spending $64 on a bulb before when I could get one for $15, but I'm willing to try anything once. I've heard some good things about these bulbs.

I doubt these types of things really make a huge remarkable difference. If you want to "do it right" and have the money, by all means get a Hortilux bulb. But if your budget is tight or you could spend the extra $40 and change on something else, I think that might be the best route.

I'm hoping to borrow a friends camera and post a few shots of my recent Jack Herer grow using Lumatek blue ballast digi's and Lucalox bulbs...I think the setup rocks... :yoinks:...but when it's time for fresh suns I'll change out half the bulbs with Hortilux to test the difference.

the hortolux produces more lumens than the GE right? now i dont know if one has a better spectrum than the other though...

after doing a little looking it seems the GE Lucolux is a bit better than the other in terms of lumen output atleast. GE 90,000 lumens, Hortilux 88,000 lumens

My guess is you're going to see very similar results. You also have to consider spectral differences. I won't know for a few months down the road though. I'm super happy with the Lumatek/Lucalox combo so far.
