what to look for in a male?

I want to cross my awesome C99 F2 (named loki) with one of my new kali males. What are some characteristics I should look for in the male besides the obvious?
I want to increase the sativa leaning side of my girl, but try to keep her 49 day maturation, and the 24" blooming height (scrog). Would a male that drops pollen early be a good pheno....compared to one that took longer to drop pollen?
Also what would it be called if I did C99 fem x Kali male then crossed it with a Kali fem x C99 male?
One more Question. If I took the same girl and crossed her with 2 different Kali males, then crossed the F1's of both is that still a F2 cross or some other designation?
Thanks for the help.

Do some searching mate, I know there was a thread with nearly the exact title somewhere around here with good info :chin:

Good Idea.

Still searching......

What to look for in a male, the references for male are astounding and would take for ever to go through....

Thanks that really helps!

I 'll know what to look for to choose a male now, but It's the test crossing that NOW makes sense.

I'll keep looking for the answer on what the cross would be called.

1. Resin 2. Stanky odor 3.Plant Structure....

In that order for me........

Hey Zen...here's the info I PM'd you about:

Symetry and Roots from hell are my first attention getters.

If you flower a male fully alongside other males or whatever you can see big diffs in floral stuff, big massive flower clusters, big ol' (hollow = bonus points here too) channeled stem are all good.

Resistances of course and heartyness (Iron Maiden tests heh heh) blah blah all that usual stuff plus..

I love it when the males have those "muscles" at the nodes where the axial stems connect to the main/apical stem, yesssiry!

Strong peitoles, "fuzzy" stems, also like to grab one of the more developed upper roots near the surface and give it a solid tug, should be strong!

Also a male tip here mi amigos.....

If you know you will be looking for a male from germination, get your 20x Lupe out and examine those coteyldon leaves (the first funny round leaves that PoP outta the seed) and the higher count and density of leaf hairs I have found correlates to higher resin production passed on heh heh and that is always a rocker for that particular expression down the line.

Remember your male effects most floral expressions semi-dominantly IME/IMO except structure (floral structure) in the female offspring generation he sired.

If one particular male seems to be way way way above the rest regarding vigor and growth rates, I would recommend NOT selecting him as a breeder. I know that seems odd but those males will often carry a hermie-tendency in my experience.

Hope it helps a bit.

Interesting, ...why would hollow stems channels be a good thing?
I remember seeing a growers pics and he said that hollow stems means the plants was efficient in uptake. Good sign.

I have no first hand knowledge, but seems reasonable to me.

I would think that using a Kali Mist for the father is going to throw that 49 day maturing thing for a serious loop. May be height issues as well. And what the good Capt. said above, except for me I put structure ahead of aroma, but not always. :joint:

Hollow Stems = high THC content.....

This is a known fact and many of the "bigger breeders" swear by it...

I have grown a few not-so-hollow stemmed plants that were extremely potent but the reverse is usually what you look for...
This was a good point!

I'm planning to let some strains breed outdoors next year and was wondering about that too. I mean the critical part must be chosing the father as there will hopefully be several mothers which naturally all display different characteristics.

Resin, Odour and structure are naturally important.

But shouldn't I smoke some too just to get a feeling of how strong the plant is?

I never throw any part of the plant away and usually eat what I don't smoke.. I like chewing on stems and end up with a truckload of weed but hay :D

What I am looking for is resistance to mold and cold weather as well as fast or autoflowering traits, which is largely based on the strains I chose but there will always be different characteristics within any strain.. Unless they are inbred in order to corner a particular pheno and genotype and that is pretty much bred out genetics.. please correct me if I am wrong

I mean how can you really know what genotype the offspring will inherit based on the parents pheno? Sometimes beutyful people get ugly children too you know... etc...

Life is pretty random

I usually go by feeling in all matters concening cultivating ganja..

So smoking the parents would give me a good idea of the potency and spirit of the plants too... right?

natty rally with mystics

That's why I never touch the plant until it's time to cut down the Kali tree

ohhhh really?

Not that I would doubt you, but has anybody else ever experienced this trait?

Sounds dubious... although I make no clear statements on this as I have no experience on the matter...

But why would strong male genes necessarily produce hermies?

Freaky and inconsistent genes? I thought that plants going hermie was due to environmental stress...

Like in frog populations where say 50% of the males might change sex in the absence of females or vice versa. It's the plants way of covering it's back.. but that essentially includes cloning which may have irregular results.. it's a backup system for ladys and lads in distress.

Has anyone seen male plants turn female btw?

but I'm still confused how a particular fenotype can give you clear picture of the genotype as some traits are hidden... ? The phenotype of a particular gene is based on if it is recessive or not.. Mendels laws and all that... one might want to breed some recessive genes and that takes time.

Natural selection is the key I assume if you keep on breeding on the same lineage year after year and throwing new genes into the mix, you will eventually find what you are looking for.

And then I would crossbreed it with a new batch of the parental strains in order to find something close to stable..

I'm gonna bet on spirit.. and smoke it

just my :2cents:

OK...I shoulda been a littler clearer when posting that info and apologize but I was in a hurry. I did not write that, cut and pasted from another site, and my breeding experience is fairly limited. I told Zen I'd track that info down for him. The dude that wrote it is well respected in some circles. That's his experience. I don't know he'd explain it other than saying that's what he's noticed over his 30+ years of growing and breeding, I've known him for 2, but I'll try and get a response.

Soul Fertilizer...to me his description identifies a male whose structure and growth pattern is well out of range what one might consider 'normal' and healthy to the point of leaning towards abbynormal and freakish.
