Aloha peoples, My 98 year old grandfather is feeling his age physically and emotionally. I was thinking protein powder in smoothies would be good or almonds. I can make him edibles, would that even be wise?
What should a man his age be eating?

At 98, he earned the right to eat whatever he wants. I'd be gumming me a steak, but that's me.

Seriously though, I'd suggest talking to a nutritionist that specializes in geriatrics.

well for health it should be full of vegetables to get many phytochemicals into his diet that his body cant biosynthesise for itself,, maybe supplements as well that his body cant make enough of at his age like MSM,chondoitin or glaucosamine if his joints are giving him any trouble and there are lots of other things but i dont like the idea of giving much specific advice for a 98 year old..

If I manage to live to that age,I would imagine a slice of 18 year old pie.

Ooops! Did I say that out loud?

Cheers PB

Imagine the things he's seen.To have all that wisdom and your body ready to pack it in. Funny how it works out that way.

Lots of fiber, if you want him to keep going...

Be as kind as can, the chance won't come again.

heh.. well. clinically, you want him to eat something which is good for his digestion. Sometimes the elderly cannot eat fatty foods because it gives them the shits.

I imagine he has eaten a lot of fish in his day, tell him to keep eating it. Protein shakes will keep his energy up but might be hard on his digestion. Almonds are great but they might have too much omega-6 (blood clotting) in it. Tell him to eat fish and fiber. he can have bacon and pork and crap 1x per week if his heart is good.

You might also want to give him small amounts of dark chocolate and resveratrol supps(in red wine). - this could help him live much longer.

well, so 10 out of 10 say he should eat whatever he likes. but did they read the post closely?

I think there is a sub-text to Longtitude's post. s/he seems to me to be saying Grandfather is NOT HAPPY with his circumstances.

and provided they're not heavy I think Granddad could eat edibles no worries. I also think they would help his state of mind.

'lost in a sea' is giving nutritional advice that is sure to help with well being. but of course if G/dad is REALLY depressed then nothing will help.

to add some perspective: G/dad has achieved >30 years life more than I have. and these days I get down thinking the end will soon be nigh. then how much more so for G/dad?

Longtitude ... yr G/dad is weighted with the Losses of a lifetime. can you get G/dad to speak with a Grief Counsellor?

betcha telling his story to an active listener AND medibles will help heaps!

cheers!

Aloha, you guys are frigging hilarious with some of your responses and some were quite helpful.
So I will cook each meal for him likes it is his last meal. Giving him what he wants while sneaking in some greens. I do have some special brownies and I really think he would appreciate a good talk after eating those. He is bearing the losses of a lifetime and is super depressed/wants to die. I really want to help him and your responses are extremely helpful.

I once made my Dad a meal,it consisted of lamb chops, asparagus and shrimp cocktail.Though he was in his late seventies he really enjoyed that meal and the look on his face was priceless.

My Dad is gone but I'll never forget that meal with my Dad.

This is actually my mother's (registered dietitian) specialty. What's his weight & height (BMI), and are there any specific health concerns (diabetes, heart disease, cancer, that sort of stuff)? How is his appetite? If he's of a lower weight, he needs high density caloric foods, that means high in fats, carbohydrates, packed in nutrition, etc. Not greasy foods, high density foods. If you're thinking protein powder, I would recommend whey powder, especially if you think his muscle density has become very poor. A decent replacement for Ensure are Carnation Breakfast Drink packs. With veggies and fruits, again, you want to get the most bang for your buck, especially if he doesn't like to eat much. If his teeth are in good condition, then seeds and nuts, maybe put through a processor and made into some kind of cookie or wafer, along with some of the protein powder, would be a good and tasty way to get important nutrients and the good types of fats into him.

I'm guessing that, considering his age, he's probably been on the thin or lean side most of his life. Yes?

I would hesitate with medibles, first because they are so difficult to titrate, and second because you don't say that he's been using cannabis at all. Vaporizing small amounts, if he might be interested, would be a better method for controlling the effects. Many elderly would find the effects of a strong buzz very unpleasant, and I've seen some good parties go very, very awry when too many medibles were consumed.
