Hey Dank, I don't mean to burst your bubble or any thing but immagrating to the EU isnt that easy.First you need to read the laws first. I'am marriaded to a German woman and believe me it isnt as easy as signing a lease. AND do not wait until the last minute to apply for an extension. The frown upon that. Another if you over stay your Tourist visa and are caught you will be banned from the EU for something like 10 years. The same as the US. To stay in the netherlands, you might need to draw up a resume and apply for an emplotment visa first. Just so you wont waste your money and 9 months rent while not being there. Or you could just get a flight back to america ever 90 days to see Mom. stay for 30 days and then return. or you could fly to a non-EU country and go back. Just make sure your stamp is renewed wvery 90 days or what ever visa time period you get. A place to get the best info for thei would be the Dutch Consulate in your state or the closet one. And you ask why I know these things? I lived with my wife in Germany. Or you could find a fat dutch girl and get married online. HaHa. I hope this will help you. Please do check this out really good before you dissapoint yourself.
vonforne, this leads me to the conclusion that you are not American, right?

There is different rules/laws for the citizens of different countries in the EU (and especially germany), americans have it easier ;)

Ich dachte wir könnten jederzeit rüber ziehen?
Hi Alex-F :)

For EU citizens its easy, especially if you're from the "old EU members", for the new EU members its harder (Stichwort "Freizügigkeit").

As far as i know, US citizens do not get a stamp in their passports when they enter the EU, meaning that its almost impossible to proof that they overstayed the 3 months as a tourist, if you plan to live and work there, its a different story.

Rüber is German for "over" or "across". He said that he thought that he was allowed to live and work in the Netherlands. As far as I know all EU citizens can except that some from the newer EU countries are limited to work in certain industries for the next few years.

I thought most US travellers entering the EU from the US get stamped. I've entered here probably dozen times and got a stamp every time. Even if you don't have a stamp, your entry is recorded when you arrive and can be looked up in a few seconds by the police to determine your status.

>>>'Dutch-American Friendship Treaty' =daft ,,,lol<<<

According to the American attorney, the Dutch attorney, and the American fellow I know who established a buisiness there, all of whom I consulted with, it originally established guidelines for reciprocation of economic development, allowing for persons from the two respective countries to establish businesses, based on specific values of investment and a workable income plan, providing that the level of investment doesn't sink below that minimum level.

It is not inherently inclusive of each spouse or adult child, but rather each adult must meet the same standards of investment.

Gray market ventures such as coffee-shops, etc., are not viable ventures, and the types of businesses are limited somewhat.

After consulting with the first persons, I also confirmed this issue with friends in Arnhem, one of whom did further research, and formerly worked in a different area of law in Holland.

The actual level of investment, the last I checked (roughly a couple of years ago), even with the euro's near-doubling the value of the former gilder, was less than $10,000.00 U.S.D.

Comments?

hazyfontazy,

If you know of a cheaper, more effective, and equally -legal- method than the 'Treaty,' I'm all ears. Lemme' know.

Like I said earlier, I'm more suited to NZ should I ever leave where I'm at, but that doesn't mean that an 'ace in the hole' is unwelcome.

OOOOOOOOOOPPPPPPPPPPS!!! Now I get it!!!

The Dutch American Friendship Treaty actually -does- equate to D.A.F.T. !!! :pointlaug

Perhaps another cup of coffee will wake up the humor quadrant of my brain.

Sorry hazyfontazy. It's still more or less early here in the sub-arctic, though it's still Summer, so at least my brain's not -completely- frozen yet... just on 'delay' mode. ;^>)

Sheeeesh. Apologies.

I think that I've just grown so darned tolerant to caffeine, Dank, that the warm water has the same effect on me as a cup of hot cocao at bed time. And I drink fresh-ground french roast in a very black strong blend.

The only time it really has any stimulant effect on me is first thing in the A.M. after several cups. Other than that, I swear that it makes me nod off.

I've hypothesized that the nature of caffeine might cause sufficient stress in muscles, etc., that ater a certain point, it has diminsihing returns. Who knows?

Actually they do scan and stamp your passport going to and coming from Holland. My research on the DAFT(good one) says it takes about 4700Euro on the books, a complete business plan, and Dutch health ins. to get a one year resident permit. At the end of the year you apply for another with certified books to show you are profitable and can support yourself. After 5 years of this you can get a permenant permit with no further reporting requirements. With the resident permit you can get a Sofi number and then a bank account. Then you are legal really. I think to ge a Sofi number you need a housing contract too.

As Dank1 knows, I have also been planning my move for a couple of years and am very close to getting it done. I have been visiting the Netherlands since the mid 90s and realized a few years ago it is where I should have been born. It will be very nice to hang and share with my peers. I will be moved over before the end of September.

Cheers, lurked around here forever, decided to register and post.

Hey MileHigh nice to see you found my thread. I wish my family would have never left it would make it allot easier on me, lol. I wish they had an immigration program for people with Dutch blood. I too realized that pot is in my destiny so the only place to do it legally is in the Netherlands, because you cant do anything if your in jail. Hopefully all will work out even though I am taking a risky position, but thats a chance I guess I'll have to take. I've known this was my life calling since I was 13 but I just tried to block this out but now I realize that I wont be happy unless I try and if I fail, try again. So moving to the Netherlands is just something I have to do to manifest my destiny. Hopefully you now understand a little more as to why Im moving there.
