Phenomenal cover at the Crossroads Guitar Festival, with Bill Murray MC'ing, and EC in the wings on stage, clearly appreciating the presentation and quality resurrection of this tune.
Watched Elton John's Farewell Tour show from 2022 at Dodger Stadium Last night. Cried an embarrassing amount of the time out of nostalgia, and memories of decades of this music carrying us through all sorts of times, losses, political protest, love, joy, wins, changes, and so much more.
And also in appreciation of who this person has been, not only through those times, but his giving to people in need. During the AIDS/HIV crisis, and so much more. and at 75, there on stage, 47 years after his first double-header show there in 1975, he was on key for the most part, and rocking out like the amazing person he is.
and seeing THAT many fucking people in celebration, singing along in unison, dancing HARD, smiling, it was mind-blowingly ALL RIGHT. Right on down to his duet with Kiki Dee... 47 years later.
Looking at the crowd, past the amazing light shows, choreography, special effects, and images, I wasn't the only one with some tears flowing. My wife considers me a marshmallow at times, but I think there were thousands of us marshmallows there at that show. I saw them in the shots of the crowds. Generations of folks brought together in a HUGE mass of people who were clearly as appreciative as I was.
Tunes like 'Burn Down the Mission' and many more spoke to past times of political standing up.. Waiting to see visitors in a minimum security facility as a youngster, and 'Daniel' playing on the radio.
Fuck me, there were some memories in that stuff.
And this tune, culminating in a celebration of life during times of loss. Fuck, what beauty and history, all through an instrumental interpretation of life, not unlike Santana's 'Samba Pa Ti'.
If you can and want to watch it (about 2.5 hours' worth), it can be found on the Disney Hub/channel on cable.
