fungus gnats are not harmless! they are called fungus for a reason... they will transmit disease to your plants ( mainly your roots) aand if thats not enough, their larvae will feed on your rooots making them even more susceptible to disease. the larvae will decrease your yields so watch it! drlongbottom is right skeeter dunks work ****en great. you can get em at your hydroshop or home depot. they contain BT a bacteria that when eaten by the larvae will kill them. just drop one in your res and you should be fine in week and a half-two. they work so much better than nematodes or neem. and hydrogen peroxide will most definitely stress the hell out of your already chewed up roots so stay away (especially if your using enough to make it fizz). so use some form of BT for the larvae and you can hang some sticky yellow cards around your grow (try at the base of the trees, its where they like to haang) to catch the mature flyers. that way your preventing even more eggs to be laid while your slautering the babies. good luck!
True, after trying a bunch of diffrent alternatives, the BT is what really helped me get rid of them buggers. Wiped them away. So now I've been applying BT also as a precaution, even if I don't see any of them crowling around the top of the soil.
Don't let people tell you they are harmless. They start out as critters in the soil that munch on roots, so that alone tells you they do damage. In some places I've lived they are a straight infestation and they'll wipe a mother plant dead in no time. Especially after a fresh root trim.
BTI for prevention
Neem oil soil soak for terrible infestations.
Pyrethium breaks down in the presence of light and is most dangerous in areas that are absent of light. Don't use this in soil.
SMC/SM-90 contains chemicals that never leave your plants. Corriander oil is cheaper from an herbal extract store anyways.
Hydrogen Peroxide (h2o2) doesn't kill them and also kills microbes in the soil if you are an organic grower. Too much can damage roots and small amounts actually help in chemical/sterile grows to oxygenate soil and keep roots clean.
No Pest Strips do not kill flying fungus gnats or babies in the soil but it will kill thrips and spider mites.
Using a layer of perlite on top of the soil also helps out.
