So many different things can influence a decision,

Smoke and grow reports- help allot but many times they are biased due to not wanting to get bashed for speaking badly about the strain or breeder,
It is seldom that you see a bad smoke report cause no grower wants to admit they wasted 3+ months and god only knows how much money on seeds that didn't live up to there hype.

Breeders Reputation- has little to do with my selections these days cause I have bought and tried seeds because of this and been disappointed, and may times with breeders its a popularity contest, lets face it every breeder has been the flavor of the month before. When it comes to breeders I tend to pay attention to how they treat their customers and how helpful they are when asked questions about their strains,
or asked for help during a grow and how well they take criticism, The sad part is some breeders let their heads swell and they let there ego's get in the way, if you bad mouth them or there product they let their internet dog lose then you wind up fighting with a bunch stupid sheeptroll's.

Price- I think price has a lot to do with making a choice, hey some people just don't have a lot of money, it is crazy to think some people would spend they money that some charge for beans, come on I have seen seeds sell for way over $500 on seedbay spend the time to get to know other growers do some networking and chance's are you will find someone that will gift you a clone of that over priced flavor of the month strain.

Pictures- pics help out alittle, even though I know its probably either the best of the bunch, professionally done or been touched up with Photoshop. I prefer Breeders that use photo's that were sent to them by everyday growers like myself, I think that sees more about a breeder and their product then anything else.

Parental Lineage- dose play a role in my choice, knowing the what the parents were dose give you some what of an Idea what your going to see and get though this is not always the case but for the most part it is. I mean if you were to grow out an untested strain that had say Zamal as on of the parents its pretty safe to say atleast 50% will go 12 -14 weeks or more depending on the other strain it was crossed with.

Breeders Description- With a little creativity you could make even the worst strain sound good, kind of like that carfax commercial where you see a smashed car and the seller changing the description to say recent paint job.

Of late I have been more interested in the work of small or privet breeders, come to think about it when ever I go on seedbay the first thing I check is the privet breeders section, you never know when your going to find a gem and hey think about this most of the best and most popular strains out there today were either found this way or seeds in a bag of great smoke i.e.. The diesel line.
Privets breeders don't get the big head like some ( and I stress some) of the professional breeders, and they do it more for the love then the profit, not that I don't respect the pro's but that is how they make a living and in that process they sometimes lose sight of what's important to others, its just the nature of the game

In the end I think it all comes down to the grower how much research they do and the all important leap of faith :joint:

One thing that I think that influences alot of our decisions but we don't want to admit it is hype. I think herb strains go through the same type of flavor of the month popularity contests that infects the music industry and almost everything else nowdays.

I'll look at parentage first for sure, but the Breeder is a very close second.
I love grow reports so I would check those out regardless ;)

Hype for sure, because hype is usually driven by a good thing. So overall reports and consensus creates the hype.
One thing I must say is the attitude of the breeder motivates me.. Many breeders love Cannabis and some only love money. Just like growers, some like me like a variation of flavor and potency, but all top notch in quality, where as some commercial growers Iknow would prefer a BIg Bud variety and would shop for something big and around 30-40 dollars.
It becomes apparent that the ones who love Cannabis and the Cannabis community and consistently put out tried and tested strains will always catch my attention. Being there to support the growers and truly looking for that perfect cross becomes evident in the end product as well. Some of the growers that brought me to this site were guys like Bog, JLP, Rez,etc, who imo really care about the plant and not just the green (everyone needs to get paid for hard work obviosly)..
that's just me
Cannabis connoiseurs (sp?) will always support other connoiseurs and will search out their wares.

But what makes a person decide on the pedigree (especialy) if they never tried it personally. For me it would be the grow/smoke reports to see if it fits my likings.

Grow/Smoke reports here are the biggest influence on tipping my hand to a certain strain, but certainly not the only factor. Hype definetly plays into it.
The breeder is a strong consideration, parent stock can effect my desision. Price rarely figures in if I'm hyped on a strain. I've paid $150 for Apollo 11 F1's yr's back, made f2's, and will always have it.
Until this fall, I hadn't bought beans in 3 yrs. I have a good stock pile to last a lifetime from previous purchases, along w/ trades amoung friends here.
Having lived thru Operation Green Merchant, and the recent downfall of Emery and OG/Heaven's Stairway, got me thinking about stockpiling strains I might not have the chance to ever get in the future.
My purchase of the Cannabible 3 this fall hyped me to purchase a few strains I hadn't planned on, but after researching them here, I pulled the trigger on DJ Short's F-13, Legend's High End, and Shanti's Early Queen.
Having never grown any DJS or Shanti stock, I'm ready.
I also bought Ace's Congo cause I'm going to grow a variety of african based strains next yr, but I also believe the Ace collective are in it for all the right reasons. Their prices are a bit high, but the genetics aren't the same 'ol, same 'ol.
That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

It is obvious that the Grow/Smoke report, is the most popular avenue of strain research...
It is a shame that alot of members here don't do grow/smoke report threads on their seed grows... I would love to see more reports go up... I think sometimes people are afraid they'll offend a breeder, or be attacked for their opinion, or be thought to be ass-kissing...
If you have benifited from the grow/smoke reports, then you should contribute to the knowledge/opinion base, imho...

i always use IC before i purchase any seeds. word of mouth /smoke report combo does it for me. I think the people on here with say if it bullshit or not. If it's worth it then i don't mind the price.
