FYI - Every military operates under the assumption that they are being listened to, this does not keep them from communicating.

In the same way, 'criminals' know they can be listened to. This does not keep them from using the phone, mail, or internet. They just have to be smart about it.

EZ Bake: I love what ya' said so much that I may in fact have to adopt you.

wow those poor little kids. Id rather be watched if it means that the law can better hunt sick fucks like that

how would watching us and putting us in jail help those kids? how at all does that make sense?

why don't you just rather you were in jail instead, then just turn yourself in and save an abused child.

come on people, think here;

making everyone unsafe is NOT a way to keep anyone safe!

There seems to be a lot of confusion about all of this.

1.) This website still has SSL. (https) However the certificate is old/expired, and you would have to tell your browser to add an exception. (This works in FireFox)

2.) I recommend using Tor as it is a very anonymous way to use the internets.

3.) Only use Tor in conjunction with SSL (https://...) if you're sending passwords. You're at the mercy of any intermediate connection without encryption.

4.) If you're using another proxy service besides Tor, still use SSL. Especially with free proxies, people use them to sniff passwords sent over clear text.

5.) Security is important, especially online.

In my opinion, trying to work within the boundaries of internet security is the wrong idea. If you actually want to feel safe, you need to start exploring outside of the box. (Wardriving, Phreaking, etc.)

what an excellent tip dude .. most will tip off alarm bells when they start to "explore outside of the box" and thats how you want to feel safe ? lol :D

I have no doubt that you are able to make a living working on computers, but you don't know what you're talking about.

funny, that really seems to best apply to your arguments :D

I offered a fair explanation to why HTTPS was useless. Most of the users on this site take care of their own security, and HTTPS would make that harder.

haha you do it for the lulz right ? .. or maybe you are living in an upside down world =)

Nice attempt at digging yourself out of that hole. Tor is a proxy service. You proved yourself wrong.

If you knew anything, you would understand that HTTPS does nothing to keep your ISP from seeing where you go. It's a secured port (443). If anything, your IP records would be easier to trace through that port, because it a highly sensitive commercial channel (with much less traffic than unsecured ports). Since this forum has no commercial trade, it makes no sense to have HTTPS.

HTTPS was not created as a way to surf the internet anonymously. It was created as a way to make sure commercial servers run a secured port and can be held accountable. It's consumer protection, that's all.

You piss me off because you have made no real contribution to this site, other than bitching. (My guess is that you're just doing this as a way to reach 50 posts, then we won't have to worry about you anymore.)

If you're honestly worried about an ISP spying on you, call them and bitch. You pay them, so they have to listen to you. Since you're such a computer guru, you should have no trouble finding a better ISP, if they won't listen.

ICMAG owes you nothing. If you have complaints, you can e-mail a webmaster, but stop spreading a bunch of disinformation in public forums.

No Dickhead. What happens is there is an strong encryption that occurs between the web browser and the web server and this encrypted traffic is routed over port 443, in most cases.

HTTPS is the only reason why I will post on this site. SSL encrypts your web traffic so that your ISP can't spy on you. Have no doubt that the ISPs are the biggest risk vector (assuming you can trust the icmag.com folks) - most of them have been giving the feds access to 100% of their traffic for years.

I think that it is irresponsible for people to suggest to a computer security newb to use TOR. I'm a pretty savvy guy, but the only time I have ever been hacked, it came from a TOR exit node. Yes, you are hiding your traffic from ISP/LEO, but you are also waving a red flag that says: "I am into illegal shit, please come hack me as you might have something to gain that will translate to $. Oh thank you for setting up an exit node for me, sure I'll trust you." Not to mention that there is plenty of rumor that the feds are VERY involved in TOR.

SSL (HTTPS) is a significant layer of protection that EVERYONE should be using. Even if you are legal in a med state, you still don't want some ripper with comp skills to figure out where you live.

If you are worried about the feds/LEO, use public access points and SSL.

Works for me. The cert is good from this Feb to next April. But I'm not worried about some worthless pig spying on my surfing habits. Matter of fact, I DARE some worthless pig to spy on my surfing habits. Come on piggy, try to get me piggy. Heeee piggy piggy piggy, sueeeee!

https could have been down momentarily, as it is wont to do on occasion.

And sorry but I must give a small chuckle to the guy that said since he's a Geek Squad team member, that he knows about all this stuff. Kind of funny. "Geek Squad" isn't a recognized certification. :)
