I have been around dogs all my life -mutts purebreed mean mini herd hunting etc etc

I would say lab could be an excellent choice - they are the dog YOU raise them to be -although one may become neurotic if kept inside too much

rottweilers are wonderful dogs and among the best I've had experience w/ they can track and work but will settle down nicely and a very smart dog

i would say the rhodesian ridgeback is one of the most interesting and capable dogs - the one I had years ago was easily one of the best dogs i'v had - and naturally protective

Sadly, many of the dogs considered to be pits are also among the best choices -BUT social stigma has created problems for these dogs and their owners

HERE'S the thing

you should never train a dog to be aggro - they will do that by instinct as they feel your fear and react to protect you all by themself

Many of the breeds w/ bad rep for 'incidents' were trained (even accidentaly) to be hostile animals

You should be able to train your dog to be exactly the dog you want - give him a clear sense of 'home'/territory, spend every free moment when he is a pup bonding and working on basic obedience - get a book/research on the web for techniques
