What do you say when at the hydro store?

went into the local hydro store the other day and as i got up to the counter i could smell the recent session.lol
i have always talked openly about growing,no worries.

yeah i'm going to go with a couple options here

1)you have balls of steel and the employees probably grow
2)you were huffing ether
3)if you arent lying you are straight up fucking retarded


so far I'm leaning towards 3... possibly 2 and 3.

anybody who openly talks about being involved in growing, much less with the grow shop employees, fully CA medical or not, is just asking to get ripped off/popped/both.

not only do they sell grow gear,but also bongs,pipes,hightimes mags,posters and general MJ paraphernalia.
There is no covering up the fact what this place is for.
I have been shopping here since they opened.8 years + now.
also,remember i live in newzealnd,not the usa.we are abit more chilled out about this sorta thing.except for the cops that is.

My local grow shop is a nice family owned and operated establishment right in the middle of town. Been going there every 8-10 weeks for the last five years. (For the heavy stuff.)

And like those that posted with common sense before me, I have probably said 50 words the whole time. Very nice people, but my business is just that... mine. I always use cash and skip the small talk. I'm sure they understand as this is a pretty risky hobby to say the least.

Again as Rez and others have said, The need to discuss your grow should be fed in this type of safe and anonymous environment. Anything else is just, well.... senseless. Robbers, police, and snitches are a plenty and all are on the look out for the ignorant. Don't be that guy!

Please don't tell me you went back into that store regardless of what state you live in? I'd have no problems going into the store of my preference no matter how big the list was cause the only response I'd get from the peeps behind the counter is..."Are you all set?...and your total is...".

Is it just me or does anyone else prefer going to the hydro store when there arent other people there? I only have one store in town and the store owner has people in there just hanging out all fukin day just talking. I kind of know who some of his friends are and I dont want them knowing my business,I guess im gonna have to just drive 90 miles and buy in bulk from a different store.

in florida you will see no such things and be asked to leave if you talk about such. No pipes for sure, no mags no nothing at any of them except growing supplies and vegetable seeds.

I like to go to the grow store during a weekday day if I can get away with it. Fewer guys roaming the aisles, being generally indiscreet.

It's smart to know what you're going for and get in and out as easy as you can. I usually buy orchids or vegetable starts when I am picking up other things.

It's a nice time to oogle the cute grow store boy, too. Too bad all I can say to him is "Hi, here's my cash!"

Be discreet, but recognize that these people are in business for customers LIKE you. At my store the staff will be as discreet as you allow. Not saying that there aren't indiscreet baddies out there, but a little common sense goes a long way.

A couple were 2 of the very first 'grow stores' in the USA about 30 years ago. I can't believe that either one is still around as f*cked-up as they are.

And all of the 'grow stores' have to buy from the same national distributor, National Garden Wholesale meaning that if you're a manufacturer or importer, etc. you have to get your product with these guys. Individual stores do very little outside sourcing.

Why bother? Just stock the stuff with the Stoner Joe labels and you're good to go to make money. AmericanAg (formerly Halide of Oregon) is proof-positive of that. 30 years of crappy prices, lousy customer service and they opened a 2nd store over on the West Side sometime in the past year or so.

I never thought americanag was that bad, but I usually know what I need when I go in. What's your favorite store in the portland area? Oh yea, I think there's way more than 20 stores in this area. I see new ones popping up all the time.

for those who don't understand the thread and think it's stupid.. must be incompetence or something.

I met with a guy who does distribution work for a couple light-technologies companies (met him outside of his store) and he talked with me about new digital ballasts that dim to different % of wattage. I could not have gone into his store and comfortably talked about this with him (I can now since I know him but I wouldnt make the convo that long in store) until now that I have met him. Also for all those who think this thread is stupid and stick with the "no words hide your tail and dont look anyone in the eyes" attitude, I found through someone who sells this technology that the biggest enemy at hydro stores is not the clerk or his friends, but interested third party (Random people) who want to know where your grow house is at.

in summary, if you are ordering mass be careful for people following you! and you dont have to be scared of the hydro guys like REZ wants you to be :-D

i recomend u never frequent hydro stores unless your legal, your just waiting to get popped. most things can be ordered online cheaper anyways, but to keep returning to the store over n over n over again year after year is no good in my opinon- someday youll be followed home, its happens more then u think-

and perhaps this has already been said,


I think us growers who don't grow anything else but cannabis forget that these guys cater to a whole industry of non pot growers.

I talk to my hydro store about houseplants I keep in DWC, Tomatoes grown outside in coconut coir, lettuce and eggplants.

He typically talks about flowers and his parents.

just because you're in an unfamiliar environment doesn't mean its always shady. Just relax and try not to talk about cannabis, (unless you're in California or some similar situation i guess). Normal (okay well, not exactly normal, plant people are a strange folk) people use these stores, and 90% of the legit transactions don't have much conversation. Normal people are growing in large and small spaces alike, so feel at ease if you need answer that space specific question.

You're only going to arouse suspicion if you're going in there every week and buying a ton of crap. (not normal)
or if you talk about canna (not normal)
