Pasteurizing soil in the oven is actually a very smart way to ensure your starting medium is free of pests. If done properly, the thermophyllic bacteria will dominate the substrate, producing organic compounds like humates. Once it cools down again, you can culture the medium again using things like compost tea and/or commercial cultures(Bio-Tone, Bio-Zome, etc.). I had root aphids really bad and was lucky enough to get a couple of cuttings to root. Put into a pasteurized medium with a bug barrier on the top and bottom(chunk diatomaceous earth(Napa 8822), the plants once more thrived and had no more bug attacks. Don't discount the oven as a viable gardening tool.
