Just to bump this one, as some interesting data came in today - which sort of backs up my theory that the so-called eradication force in Afghanistan is actually there to protect and reinforce the world's 'illegal' opium supply:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/6239734.stm

Opium production in Afghanistan is soaring out of control, the annual UN report on illegal drugs says.

The World Drug Report says more than 90% of illegal opium, which is used to make heroin, comes from Afghanistan. It says cultivation of opium poppies increased dramatically in the country, despite the presence of more than 30,000 international troops there. The report says Afghanistan is unlikely to regain real security until the production of illegal drugs is tackled.

just MHO, but i think all our soldiers deserve to be able to smoke all the effin weed they damn well please. And no, i don't think they should have to abandon their firearms to do so, because they've gotta be ready in case they get jumped by the enemy.

and in response to elevator man....production is most likely up because the strict, controlling hand of the taliban has been lifted somewhat (elements are returning in various sectors, though not unified fronts) and the coalition forces don't have the real goal of shutting down farms, they're trying to get rid of opposition forces............................which are most likely funded larely by opium production.

this seems like such a twisted topic here at this site. one minute a bunch of people think that the solution is to allow regulated production of the poppies, while the next minute the attitude seems to be that we should just wipe out the farmers' fields.

Its just so twisted in my eyes

I think the war in Afganistan is "won" in the sense that the major fighting and death is over. What is left is to win and unify the people of Afganistan and more over show that the US is there trying to help. Burning a farmers crop isn't going to do that and I would be suprised if tey burned it.

they didnt torch the field or eradicate the plants because thats not what they're there to do, they have bigger things on theyre minds than killing plants in other countries

how about the cia and dea turn over thier drug money to buy the afghani poppies, and then just store them up for legal use or destroy them, that way the farmers get thier money, and no more heroin. Yay,
