Weed Wars: New show on Discovery

We are different. I am writing laws to help patients, and you are wanting to have laws to hide behind so that maximum profit can be made by the crooks who want to ship product out of State.

Adapt or die. :)
I think Darwin had you pegged.

everyone should change over to there local CU. I had 2 accounts 1 CU and the other was with my community bank but even the community banks are owned by the big boys. I now only use my CU..

Do they stream all the death that Pharmacy dish out daily NOT. Its easier for the big Pharma to continue to make there bonus money off the walking dead.Cannabis will take the place of many drugs currently on the market and that scares them enough to keep dishing out billions to keep cannabis illegal. we already know cannabis greatly improves the quality of life for terminally ill patients. There is no drug on the market today that will do this without making the patient addicted to these medications that will eventually kill them..

Sorry got off topic a bit

In my humble opinion, I think anything that shines the light in marijuana, and gets people talking about it, is a good thing. We have all been in the shadows and scared shitless for so long, that when the light turns on what we do, we freeze, like deer in the headlights. Weed is here to stay, and like it or not, it is time to reach out to the masses. I do know that as long as we hide, they think we are doing wrong. If this show is done right, maybe middle America will see it is not this vile drug it has been portrayed. NOW is the time for this very maligned plant to step into the light. That a plant that was made illegal because the politicians thought mexican and black men would use it to have sex with white women, is ludicrous. After all these years, it is time to really see why it was made illegal and realize that those reasons are no longer valid in today's society. That there are medical patients that the federal government serves, is even more of an insult. Why is their pain any greater than mine? And why is the government allowed to determine who gets it, and who doesn't?

Agree completely and that is why anyone who grows more cannabis than they use personally is doing GODS work.

Those who complain about the how and to whom grower chooses to distribute cannabis is free to OverGrow the world and do it their way; but anyone that wants to put growers in a cage are no friend of mine or the patients they claim to serve.

here's the latest article on the matter, after the FED has started cracking down....

Orange County and Beverly Hills have “The Real Housewives.” The San Francisco Giants had “The Franchise” on Showtime last summer.

Now, Oakland is getting ready for a reality television close-up. Naturally, it is a show about marijuana.

The Discovery Channel will broadcast the first episode of “Weed Wars” on Thursday. The four-part series offers an inside look at the medical marijuana business at Harborside Health Center in Oakland, the largest dispensary on the West Coast. The show stars the colorful crew that runs the dispensary: Steve DeAngelo, the silver-pigtailed co-founder and executive director; Luigi Zamarra, the nervous accountant; and Dave Wedding Dress, the bearded, dress-wearing co-founder, among others.

The day-to-day routine, it turns out, is a mix of the achingly mundane and the risky. In one episode, as Terryn, a Harborside “bud tender,” frets about aphids killing his plants, Mr. DeAngelo stares into the camera lens and says, “At any moment federal agents could break through these doors and lock me up for the rest of my life.” In fact, the Justice Department announced a big crackdown on medical marijuana dispensaries across California soon after the series finished its scheduled shooting, though Harborside remains open.

“Weed Wars” is not the first marijuana reality show. It is not even the first featuring Oakland. That honor goes to “I’m in the Marijuana Business,” an episode of the MTV “True Life” series that was broadcast last summer. While “Weed Wars” is straightforward, “True Life” was more typical reality TV fare, with a cast of volatile individuals prone to fighting, crying and flashing money.

MTV followed a friendly 20-something named Chris who moved to Oakland to pursue his lifelong dream of growing marijuana. But “he’s been afraid to tell his family for fear they’ll disown him,” the announcer intones dramatically. It also features a Colorado hippie couple, Gemma and Pa, as they struggle to make marijuana bars in between stoner ruminations and screaming matches.

Mr. DeAngelo wanted to avoid this type of portrayal. He said that before the Discovery Channel offer, he turned down 10 other companies because “I could tell they had some sort of agenda.”

“We have been stereotyped as slackers, profiteers and criminals,” Mr. DeAngelo said. “With this show, they will see that we are decent people who are providing medicine for patients in a responsible way.”

The first episode of “Weed Wars” centers on a tax-bill fight between Harborside and Oakland’s Business Tax Board of Review (in what is undoubtedly the television debut for the solemn and obscure entity).

To cope with the stress of the ordeal, Mr. DeAngelo turns to his own form of relief. The camera cuts to a darkened room. “I don’t want to forget how to relax, and cannabis really helps me remember how to relax,” said Mr. DeAngelo as he lovingly inhaled.

At another point, Mr. DeAngelo, who has a medical marijuana card, rips into a marijuana-laced piece of gingerbread to calm his nerves as he drives across the Bay Bridge to a speaking engagement. It does not take effect for 45 minutes, he tells the camera in an effort to explain that he is not driving while high.

Although Discovery could not know it at the time, the dispensary’s skirmish with the tax board was a precursor to much more serious weed wars. Soon after the crew turned off its cameras, Harborside was hit with a $2.5 million bill from the Internal Revenue Service. The Department of Justice crackdown on California dispensaries came the following week.

In an interview this week, Mr. DeAngelo acknowledged that when he opened his doors to the cameras last year, the legal climate was decidedly sunnier. The Obama administration had indicated that it would not go after medical marijuana dispensaries.

“I wasn’t expecting to find us in the middle of a huge reversal of federal policy when we made this,” Mr. DeAngelo said.

Indeed, after the announcement from the United States attorneys, the Discovery crew returned to collect more video. When asked if it added more drama to the show, Mr. DeAngelo deadpanned, “Just a touch.”

Some people in the medical marijuana industry were alarmed by Mr. DeAngelo’s decision to open up his operation to the cameras.

“I think they’re absolutely nuts,” said William Panzer, a criminal lawyer who represents medical marijuana dispensaries in the Bay Area. “I think they risk getting shut down. They risk getting raided.”

The Discovery producers, however, seem careful with the dispensary’s image.

“With this show in particular, because there’s a lot on the line for Steve and his business, we wanted to make sure we were getting it right,” said Nancy Daniels, executive vice president of production and development at Discovery.

Mr. DeAngelo is hoping for the best. “There’s no question in my mind that the show will help the movement,” he said, though the dispensary still faces some harsh realities. “Whether or not it is going to protect Harborside from the wrath of the federal government, I don’t know.”

if the discovery people are being honest they are portraying MMJ in a positive light... still a fucked up time for this show to go on the air...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
it's sad to assume that the growers who operate in a crowded market, get a lesser price and therefore ship it out of state to make a better profit give two tin shits who buys their product in the end. "Gods" work? too funny. i highly doubt those that are upset about profit margins and proceed to ship their harvest across state lines are too concerned about "who" the end user is.... it's obviously about money and not caring for patients. the opportunity to operate under state sanctions instead of underground and illegally is going to bring the price down.... decreased risk = decreased reward. if they want to go back to pulling 4-5K a pound i suggest going back to the black market and stop whining. can't rake 100K a year growing a plant anymore? wah.
you spoke earlier in the thread about HS operating in a free market.... sorry but when you use lobbyists and bribes to push out the competition in order to monopolize the market it's anything but free. i see you have yet to address the post concerning the ASA and how they operate. in one breath you support the supposed "free market" that HS is apparently involved in, and in the next you support the growers who are going around the market value by shipping out of state.
people want it legal so they can operate without worry of prosecution.... the other side to that is there will be a rise in competition, the supply will rise to (or exceed) the demand and prices will fall. that's how it works. if you want your cake and eat it too go to a place that will support the prices that you were accustomed to when you were breaking the law.
for what it's worth, i don't agree with the prohibition of MJ one bit, and if it became legal in my state you wouldn't find me crying about competition and falling prices.
How is your line on a map relevant? Why is your sanction or that of your government needed?
What is "going around the market value by shipping out of state?"
How does any of this activity concern anyone besides the participants in the transaction?
Why should anyone be subjected to what you or anyone else thinks about what they do with their time or property?
What is stopping you from producing tons of cannabis and distributing it free of charge?
In your world are some end users more worthy than other end users? If the unworthy end users end up smoking cannabis does that mean your chosen class is injured? How much do you produce for your chosen class?
All of those statements are right on. i agree with all of them. Except for the fact that we live in a civilized society(sometimes not so civilized) and we have laws. You have to work with what you have, and we have laws.
Keep on dreaming though. I like those ideas as well.
Fuck your immoral laws.
"The Ambassador [of Tripoli] answered us that it was founded on the Laws of their Prophet, that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners, and that every Musselman who should be slain in battle was sure to go to Paradise."
"If a law is unjust, a man is not only right to disobey it, he is obligated to do so." Thomas Jefferson
You keep bowing to immoral laws and I'll keep dreaming ;)
You never answered how people trading flowers across state lines makes them uncivilized. You never explained how your obedience to immoral laws or immoral laws themselves makes us a better society?
Nazi Germany had laws too and every single thing Hitler did was legal, and perhaps civilized by your standards; even so doesn't make it moral or right.
Maybe someday more people will dream instead of bow.
It makes them uncivilized because the law says so. I do not agree with the law, but I also would not sell tons of outdoor across the entire Country because I know it would undermine the entire movement, and what we have gained so far.
Also I am not a greedy fuck head. :)
Your movement has gained nothing if you condemn those who spread cannabis and begrudge / defame the end user's consumption.
Any person in a movement to free cannabis benefits from every plant grown. Most people here use cannabis and derive a personal REAL benefit from using cannabis.
My point is because you agree that the prohibition against cannabis is immoral and uncivilized, and because you enjoy cannabis personally, you might want to forgive your brother his faults and instead praise him for his efforts; doubly so if the availability of his flowers brings up the quality of many peoples' lives.
The availability of his flowers makes it damn near impossible to get a med law passed because then it looks like people in nor cal are hiding behind med laws to generate a profit from shipping product out of State. Which they are doing. Secondly this shipped in product takes away from the local sources because it is very, very cheap. There is nothing positive about shipping large quantities of herb across the US.
When we have full legalization then ship away, but right now we don't. When someone from nor Cal ships to my small town ( which they do) it does not help anything what so ever.
No one is ever going to take Cali seriously when there are so many people hiding behind the law to ship tons of product out of state.
It just is what it is. Shit needs to stop. There are things around the bend. Just wait and see. You reap what you sow. Literally. :)
sure it helps..
it helps the guy in your town come up
it helps the guy in norcal come up
it gives more options to smokers in your town as to what they get to smoke
it helps more people in your town have access to quality medication
it helps people in your town to not smoke brickpack.
When someone from nor Cal ships to my small town ( which they do) it does not help anything what so ever.
why do want to limit people in your town's choices?
don't you want people to have access to multiple prices,qualities and quantities?
Well the fact is the west already has "Med Laws". Inbound shipment from out of state would be a good reason for new states to pass med laws, then you law and order types could have an alternative to point to and claim to be better than the black market.
If local guys can't produce better for less DESPITE the shipping and brokering charge then the local guy goes out of business. Obviously the end user desires imports more than domestic production. There are many businesses that have gone under because of imports. However these are USA produced flowers and you are just bitching and looking for protection from other domestic producers.
No need to wait for immoral laws to be changed, as MANY great thinkers have said being civilly disobedient is cool ;)
No one should care who take CA seriously or not. The market for their products (wine, movies, cannabis, etc.) will tell the world how serious they are.
Shit needs to stop? Who are you the dean of cannabis? How about you stop ALL meth houses in the USA before you talk to me about "Stopping" cannabis?
All of those things you listed help the prohibitionists keep their fight going.
I am trying to get a med law in place. The first thing that comes up is Cali, and how everyone hides behind there law to ship product out of State.
So how does that help out? It doesn't.
GREED! MONEY! That's all this is about. Throw in some woman and we have ourselves a rap video. :)
Every time a State in what ever form or fashion talks about proposed med laws this quote is used "it won't be anything like California's law". I wonder why that is?
This problem needs to be fixed because it is hurting the advancement of the cause.
P.S. As much shit that is talked about Harbor Side I must say that at least they are not shipping product out of State.:)
