Oh I suppose that if Putin were Stalinist and decided to go on a land grab jag then maybe we would be able to understand and accept that NATO would be a prudent measure.
But it's not like Putin is hailing to the Stalinist Soviet Union ideal or grabbing the land surrounding the Black Sea as a military advantage to campaign in Europe or anything...

NATO are the land grabbers here, we had a deal to end the Cold War. We were to not expand NATO East now we're right on Russia's border. Those riots years ago in Ukraine were backed by the US and NATO and we put Zelenskyy in power. Now we want to arm them with nuclear weapons....
I don't think Russia is the aggressor, I think you believe all the propaganda our government spews out. The same government who killed thousands of people in Central America for wanting fair pay for producing our bananas. The same government who started the war on drugs then sold black people crack, while killing more people in the Contra wars. You may trust the US government, I don't, not even a little bit.
Though the verbal statement was made at the negotiation table to not expand NATO, the commitment itself never was written into the treaty.
Verbal promises with/between 2 entities who are notorious for violating their words and treaties.

That's a rub for me. In my world, which mostly refers to Alaska (though I know it's similar or the same elsewhere), a witnessed verbal statement re. obligations is an enforceable verbal contract in court. My government knows no such integrity. Bastards.null, void, and unenforceable...
