I have tried the 6 in vortex and the fantech. IMO I lean more toward the fantech for 2 reasons 1 Its not as loud and 2 it seems to be more powerful at 392 cfm. It showed when it dropped the temps 2 deg.

Interesting, first vote for Fantech yet

Are you compairing the regular 6" Fantech to the normal 6" Vortex (449 CFM) or is the Fantech a high output model?

i just picked up an 6" elicent 309cfm. its a really solid fan. not to loud. i was told that the elicents are better than vortex because they are made in italy as opposed to china. i dont know how true that is but i also got a good deal on it too.

It is the fantech FX6XL 392 cfm compared to the votex 449. changed due to the fact a bunch of peeps at OG were saying how good they were but I havnt really heard much about them since.

I thought vortex were made in Canada or are they just based out of Canada?

I use the elicent 8" model. Barely can hear the thing when hooked up to ducting. Works great and they can be found for a great deal on ebay sometimes.

Hey there,

Just picked up a 6" vortex 449 cfm, to tell you the truth it is pretty loud, its in my closet and you can still hear it very faintly outside my room, You can make it less noisy by inverting the fan to have it blowing into the filter rather than pulling through it.

I just got a sweet deal from MD Hydro i got a can 33 filter 6" vortex and 6 in duct for $300.00 shipping included. you cant beat that. MD has got some great deals, also i ordered it on tuesday morning and i got it on friday. So super fast shippers to. and i dont live on the east coast. Im really blazed i hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip N.Kron. I think I need the exact thing. Been wondering what and where to buy such a setup. How big is the room this will be in.

Insulated Ducting

Insulated Ducting

 how many of you use insulated duct or wrap/silence your ducting to lower noise & how effective is it ?...thanx

Well I guess that if everyone is going to respond to a thread abandoned a year ago, then I will to.

My main concerns are airflow and noise. So those of you who have used a few different fans or maybe even one you like, what do you guys think is the most quiet and powerful 6" inline on the market?

The most quiet and powerful 6" fan is a 10" fan with a speed reducer. Does that make sense?

Big fan, slow speed, same CFM = Quiet

Small fan, high speed, same CFM = Loud

Another thing that helps a little bit is using oversized ducting. This also helps reduce line resistance.

I use insulated ducting where I can and it does help some. The noise is mainly around the fan as it's really just air turbulence/movement and not the fan itself. If your intake/exhaust is very close to the fan it will definitely kick out more noise. Put the fan up or down line a bit and this should also help a little bit.

I gave those Fantech's a quick look and yadda yadda, blah, blah what the fuck ever. Move more air in a smaller housing or through a smaller diameter ducting and you get more noise. A 309 cfm 6" Elicent makes less noise than a 447 cfm 6" Vortex...go figure....

Nothing personal Masterlow37...it's really just about physics.

I've got a a 6in Vortex, 8in FantechXL, and a 6in Fantech(reg),

The Vortexes are easier to setup: power cord already installed, the mounting flange is much easier to place and use especially for bungee dampening setups, also flanges for ducting are longer.

The blades and body on the fantech are nicer finish and seems to be slightly higher quality and they have a higher range of fan speeds, but other than that vortexes are great as well.

Fantechs might require the neoprene flanges or ducting O-rings to secure ducting in place...while the vortex flanges are more easily secured with just tape..

I bought the mufflers---about 30% more effective than just insulated ducting so, $70 for the extra stealth, worth it in my situation. Also hard to accomodate as these guys are 2 foot long muffler that needs to be placed on the outlet of the fan.

I use insulated ducting everywhere and it's worth the $30 for a box of 25ft.

WHAT ABOUT HURRICANE FANS - ANY GOOD COMPARED TO VORTEX?
I have both Vortex and Hurricane and IMHO I would take the Hurricane over the Vortex.Hurricane has better exhausting in my particular situation and it is pretty quiet..my 2 cents worth..Hurricane was cheaper too
