People have dropped newer Porsche engines in it, suby 2.2's in em, I think I may have seen one on ebay a while back that had an engine from a WRX...

Currently overhauling a '72 VW Transporter with the 1600cc. Got it for $500 with the engine pulled out, sitting in the bay of the bus (some kid "started" to work on it), but with almost all of the original components. A little bit of metal to be redone in front floor pan. The body is in GREAT condition for sitting outside for years. Hasn't been driven since '94. No rot in the frame. I'm about 2 hours of grinding from being ready for the Rustoleum.
Being an air cooled novice, I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to rebuild the engine myself. Luckily my dad grew up in the 60's and 70's and has worked on scores of them. Thanks pops.

Hey holdin ,You got lucky and got the 1600 engine with it .They are easiest and least expensive and most interchangeable ,as compared to the late bus type 4 motors.
You could get a used one out of any bug and it would fit ,i would try craigslist ,you could get a used running one for 2-500 bucks.And use the old motor for parts.
Theirs usually a junked bus in most junkyards,If you make a trip to a junkyard .If you see the hardtops ,always grab the speedometer and the accelorator cable.Cause they always "eventually" break..If you find a camper bus .Look for the curtain rods..plaid couch ,,and popup table ..If you have a regular school bus style interior ..these 3 items can make your bus a party camping machine ,without all the heavy cabinets / sink and shit.If you need some new parts to finish (and you will) www.cip1.com has one one of the best and cheapest selections of parts.....just a few thoughts i figured i'd share ....good luck with it,and share some pics with us when you can!!....

I'm in the minority on this one, I love the L-jet FI system. snaggle that cip1 is a great link. I don't know how I didn't know about that....
also www.busdepot.com and www.germansupply.com have a lot, with bus depot having the best prices I've seen on a lotta bus stuff.....

I badly mistreated my 1968 VW bus ...
which I bought "well used and abused" already. When I could no longer stand the noise of the blown head gasket and marginal power, I ordered a Crown adapter kit from SoCal and stuffed a 140hp 1965 Corvair transaxle & engine into it. The extra weight set my bus down on its "haunches" a bit, but the power and handing were remarkable. It's stability in cross-winds was far superior to the stock setup. The modified bus handled corners like it was on rails. I never had slush or snow that I ever got stuck in.
The 4 carbs were matched primaries, and synched to open simultaneously. The exhaust was custom made, with a balance tube between the sides. I was forced to use an electric fuel pump with a separate in-line pressure regulator and truck-style cartridge fuel filter to keep up with engine requirements. I could wind it up from a dead stop in 1st gear to 30 mph, and easily to 60 mph in second, with rpms and throttle to spare. I never went to red-line with the pancake 6 cylinder, and never found the need to discover what it's top speed was. It was a tremendous amount of fun, except it liked to spin off the fan belts a bit too much for my liking.

I've only been to one of those VW meets and it was good fun, but it was a real small one.
I did learn a valuable lesson recently....DON'T have a huge Spicoli smoke-out session in your bus in the middle of the city.
