In 1503 a special holy book was commissioned by Queen Anne of Brittany, who was the only women to be Queen of France... Twice...
The special book Queen Anne wanted? A holy book of hours...
A book of hours was a christian devotional book, usually filled with texts, prayers and psalms in Latin.
The book was illustrated by Jean Bourdichon between 1503 and 1508.
The book Jean Bourdichon would create for the Queen was exceptional...
Grandes Heures of Anne of Brittany (Les Grandes Heures d'Anne de Bretagne) was decorated in lavish artwork fitting a Queen. But this book had some special artwork missing from most surviving holy books... Cannabis...
Intermixed with religious scenes were a mixture of daily life choirs. Working on the farm, making wine, sowing fields...

But in this holy book, these daily life scenes were mixed with a unique addition...
Bourdichon would paint realistic representations of 337 plants spread throughout the ornate pages. When it came down to the choices of which plants to illustrate, Bourdichon chose an interesting plant indeed... Cannabis!
Male cannabis
Female cannabis
Not satisfied with just a simple cannabis drawing, he would paint the plant twice... Cannabis would be the only plant to illustrate both the male and female... Cue angel music...
It makes you wonder what else is hiding for us to find...

I looked through 400 plus pages of that book over a couple weeks, looking through all the detailed pictures and edging. Really marveling in the artwork of it all. I can not believe I missed that

Zulu tribesmen smoking Dagga (cannabis) using “The Earth Pipe”, South Africa. Around 1900
I've looked a long time to find a photo of the earth pipe in Africa in use, finally found one!
Looks like this one has a bowl outside the hole, going into a hole filled with water. Straws above waterline and bam, earth bong!
