Growergonewild - no, I don't really think a specialized feeding regimen is necessary - but if you're gonna over-veg like I just did  I'd definitely recommend a silica additive like Barricade to help strengthen those stems....

vhGHost - thanks for the props :smoker: the downfalls of a soil octagon like I run are that it'd be tough to set up an automated watering system, and ... um.... I guess that's about it!

DirtDoctor: You're grow is very intriguing, and I was just wondering if that style would work well for a closet grow...could it be scaled down to wheel in and out of a closet for maintenence?

Edit: And also how many square feet is your system rolled completely up?

Balla - in that first pic of the Octy all closed up, it was in an 8'x7' space - I got 5-3/4 Lbs out of that 8x7 space, so that was pretty good :D

And yeah, for closets, I have friends that just built a lot of shelves in a small closet and hung lights in there - they didn't do any roll-out shelf kinda thing, but I don't see why you couldn't :joint:

Nice... You could do vertical setup with plumbed raingutter or you can build your own channels with wood and use a fiberglass repair kit in order to water proof the wood. It's not super cheap but it is easy. you can do the same to make a top in order to put in netpots or use the resin kit on styrofoam in order to make it hard enough as well.

What about a design like in christian taylor's pictures...maybe in like a 5' x 5' space? or would the plants grow to close to the lights?

Chosen: That rain gutter idea sounds good. Never thought of that before, did you just come up with that?

Bigballa420: I guess it would be cool if you vegged very, very little. Probable would require some intensive training as well.

Yo DirtDoctor...

Yo DirtDoctor...

Could you please give the specs for an individual shelf unit. In other words, how wide are they, what is the distance between shelves, does each shelf have a "back", what thickness and grade of plywood, etc.? Also, how large are those containers. BTW - FREAKIN' NICE JOB!!!

AvgJoe - I'm runnin 3 x 1000W lights, and a verti-tube I made out of 6" cool tubes. I just posted a link showin the construction details: http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=66592

Phrank, you can see most of the construction details for the shelves in the background of the pictures in that thread too. (or what the heck, I'll post one here too):

The shelves have no backs. I water the plants from the back (using a pump & wand these days) while the octagon is closed around the light-tube.
It's 1/2" or 5/8" Plywood painted with mildew-resistant bathroom paint.
Each shelf is maybe 1/4" wider than a 10" x 20" seedling flat, so I can use a flat underneath the pots to catch run-off.
The shelves on each unit are about 15" apart vertically.
Each unit has 5 shelves, and I put 2 plants in 3-gallon pots on each shelf.
8 units makes an Octagon, so 5x2x8 = 80 Plants.
Each unit sits on 4 casters (wheels) so I can wheel them around on the linoleum and work on the plants (in the picture above, the octagon is wedged into an 8x7 space, where I had to wheel all the shelves out to water every few days - awesome use of space, but it was a bit of work. :joint:

ok! nuff for now, I'm gonna eat some dinner! Thanks for all the interest, and yeah I'm pretty stoked on my best ever harvest from this system!

Oh - what would I do differently? Either not veg my plants quite so long, or use a Screen to control those beotches - you can see in the pre-harvest shots how much they're hanging.... the fact that they were hanging doesn't bother me in the least, but it caused wasted space at the top of the octagon - so next run I'll keep em in better control I hope!

:D
